Not a collaboration. She was lead singer of Rufus and this put her on the map. Stevie Wonder wrote this song.
I was gonna say this! Rufus was the name of the band!
Stevie wrote this? No wonder (no pun intended) I always loved this song.
Didn’t know Stevie W wrote but you absolutely hear his influence
100% : )
Yep this came out around 1974
Love this song..total funk of the 70s
My God - I was there for this. I grew up in NYC and my summer day care took us to Central Park for the day. Rufus and Chaka Khan were recording this song in the Park for a Bob Hope special.
We couldn't see them from where we were but we could hear them and we were all doing the breathy bits. Ah memories...
My uncles went to high school with Yvette Marie Stevens AKA Chaka Khan at Kenwood High in South Chicago
This is early Chaka Kahn in the band Rufus. Sweet Thing has soaring and sweet vocals. You saw her with Steve Winwood - Higher Love
Sweet Thing isn't from her solo career. It was first recorded when she was with Rufus in 1975 on their 4th album.
I believe her first solo hit was "I'm Every Woman," which came out two years after "Sweet Thing" (with Rufus). Both are terrific songs.
@@jdw5678 correct!
Chaka Kahn is not just a singer, she is a force of nature. She is also an activist. A gorgeous voice. I would suggest the Rufus era music. I Feel For You, a song written by Prince specifically for her is another great choice.
Prince didn't write it for Chaka. It was on his 2nd album from 1979, and she remade it in 1984. Prince's version wasn't a single. Rebbie Jackson (sister of The Jackson 5) also had a version in the same year as Chaka, but Rebbie's was an album track, not a single. Prince did later write some songs for Chaka though.
@@Musicvegan01 Oh.
They reacted to "I Feel For You" two years ago. Checkout their reaction.👍👍
In the '80s I was stationed in Japan in the USAF and she came to our base to put on a USO show. My office in the hangar that the show was put on in was "volunteered" to be her dressing room. For weeks after the show I could smell her perfume in the office. Needless to say, it was a great show.
One of the best singers in popular music history. I was 9 years old when I heard this? I was mesmerized. I turn 60 this October. I remain mesmerized. Many great vocal performances. Original, signature, incredible singer. You can place that voice from miles away, and you're probably going to shake your butt, depending on the song. Legend. Rufus was tight, fun, and funky.
Back in the day,, When this song was released it was an absolutely HUGE hit & was definitely "FUNKALICIOUS!!🔥❤️🔥
One thing that has never changed is the joy she radiates through her voice, smile and her stage confidence. Just watched her NPR Tiny Desk set last week and was moved by her ageless beauty and the sense of joy that emanates from her soul.
I had the pleasure of meeting her once on St Mark Place in NYC in the early 90's. What an incredibly nice and unassuming lady she is. She was with her son before he got into trouble. She was so gracious, she spent about ten minutes speaking with me. Never too busy or too important for others.
Chaka Kahn was one of the few people that could sing a Stevie Wonder song as well as he could. Love this one! Grammy Winner!
Still is . .
Loved her "I'm Every Woman"
I remember turning on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert because my cousin was in a band called Wet Willie, a Southern rock band, that was on the show. They were very good, but right after them came Rufus and Chaka doing this song. First time I ever heard them. That was far more memorable.
I just showed a coworker this song YESTEDAY! This is one of thEE FUNKIEST songs EVER! Look at the year, NINETEEN SEVENTY FOUR!!!! Nobody on the planet even knew what hit them!!!! Great song!
Can never go wrong with Chaka and Rufus.
She is the QUEEN! The groove is freaking incredible!
for sure, man I loved those days!
She sure is beautiful. ❤
Next is “Once You Get Started”, “Sweet Thing” & “Do You Love What You Feel?” The Chaka Khan with Rufus era was fire!
Absolutely 👍🏽💯❤
"Do You Love What You Feel" FOR SURE!
Good choices! How versatile they were -- "Once You Get Started" instantly cranks up like a five-alarm fire, while "Sweet Thing" chills as a laid back, sultry soul number. Both of them and "Do You Love" are dynamite.
Good choices. I would add "At Midnight" and "Hollywood".
@@jamesd5118 + "You Got the Love"
I knew you'd LOVE it!!! Thanks so much, Jay and Amber, for playing one of my all-time favorite tunes. This was my first exposure to Chaka Khan and Rufus back in 1974. It is so incredibly funky. It makes me dance
May I suggest the next tune by Chaka you take in is her iconic I'm Every Woman. You will adore.
Sometimes I am like "NO WAY THEY'VE NEVER HEARD THIS!" Oh my, this tune make Chaka a superstar!
Chaka Khan sang backup on Steve Winwood's Higher Love. She sang the crazy high parts near the end of the song.
They already reacted to that. Not sure they noticed her or not in that song.
You long amazing! Great review
..."Class of 76"...Here's another radio classic that played multiple times daily on the radio just because it was simply another type of funky music that nobody could keep from head bobbing too with their tough face on...
😂😂😅 “head bobbing with the tough face” had me in tears and brought back memories! 😂😂❤❤
“Do you love what you feel” is another great song from them
Great one!
This song is about as funky as funk can get.
It's songs like this that make me remember just how good we had it musically then. When this hit I don't care who you were you knew Chaka, and you rocked with her! What a time to be a teenager, I tell ya!
Rufus is the name of the whole band in which Chaka Khan happens to be the lead singer of, later as she became more popular, they changed the name to Chaka Khan & Rufus; just like Diana Ross & the Supremes etc. It is NOT a duet. It’s her & the whole band.
Always a good day when listening to Chaka Khan ♥️🙏🏼✝️✌🏼😎
You beat me to it......
The talk-box sound could be a Vocoder, which electronically mixes a microphone with an instrument - usually a guitar. I used a Vocoder to mix a voice with a keyboard once and got a Led Zeppelin Moby Dick vocal sound.
This one was hot right from the start.
It vaulted Rufus to notoriety here And around the world.
What I got will knock all your pride aside!!! Tell me something good! CHAKA!!!!!!🔥😍❤
First of all, Amber! You look fabulous and 18-20 yrs old. Secondly, how in the world could it be 50 yrs since this song came out??? I just turned 70 ( feel 50) and this is becoming surreal. Thanks to youtube reactors our music will live on!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Jordan is a lucky man. I hope he recognizes how beautiful his wife is.
Another great Rufus track is "Once You Get Started". There's a great live version from the Midnight Special.
Rufus is the name of the band. She got big with them first before going solo.
I read she was too young for some of their early gig venues
Rufus is the name of the keyboard player the leader of the band come on
Chaka Khan gave a free concert at Stern Grove in San Francisco.
Chaka Khan's vocals over a syrapy, slow FUNK GROOVE! It doesn't get any better than this!
EVERYBODY fell in love with her when this came out! Looks, style, talent, she had it all.
I've been waiting for you to do this one! It is on the short list of suggestions I was going to send next week. This was the original studio cut laid over the video of a live performance. Yes, that was a talk box. The funky keyboard you saw being played is a Hohner Clavinet.
Most of us brothers had hers and Pam Grier's posters on their walls back in the 70's.
Do you remember Jane (or maybe Jayne) Kennedy? Just wow.
Man yall BARELY scratching the surface of Chaka's catalog. Yall ain't ready 😂
Right!!! 😂
These poor souls today are so DEPRIVED! 😂😂😂
1. The proper band name was, “Rufus featuring Chaka Khan”
2. This was their first hit and it introduced Chaka to the world.
The Bobby Womack song 'Stop on by' is another wonderful number by Rufus to track down
Omg, this brought back so many memories, heard this song in my sleep so many times!
Sweet Thing should be next 😊
Stevie Wonder wrote and produced this song. They won the Grammy for "Best R&B Song" in 1974
I didn't know that but now I hear it. It sounds like stevie! Thanks for sharing
Stevie Wonder did wrote the song but Bob Monaco & Rufus produce it. #FYI
@carladavis1473 Yes this is Stevie all day
And she's just barely 21 here.
Stevie Wonder wrote & arranged it .@@CHICAGOWIND1981
The voice and the beauty…can’t ask for anything more. ❤
I always loved this song, and it was way too long since I've heard it! If you haven't reacted yet to "I'm Every Woman," it's FIRE!
This is an all time favorite of mine! On vinyl 🤌🏻🔥🔥🔥
"What Cha' Gonna Do for Me" would be a great next choice from the early 80s and it's a nice pop/soul/jazz blend from Chaka.
She sang back up for Steve Winwood on Higher Love
Love this song!!! Been in love with her ever since!
Chaka khan as lead singer of Rufus ("Rufus featuring Chaka Khan"), song written by Stevie Wonder. Good reaction. (This is a classic/iconic Jam!).
Chaka Khan’s duet with Peter Cetera is called ’Feels like Heaven’ and I love it. Very powerful.
Chaka! The QUEEN of Funk!
This is a classic seventies hit! I love this song (1974)! Rufus with Chaka Khan was one of the best R&B acts of the era! Chaka went solo after she left Rufus!❤❤
Would love for you to listen to “Sweet Thing” by Chaka and Rufus ❤
Yessssss!!! I’ve been waiting for this one!! Thank you 😁
I saw Chaka live about 6 years ago, she was so beautiful and her voice perfect!
Wow!! I haven't heard this song in years!! I love Chaka Khan, she's just so beautiful. My son's former wife looks almost identical to Chaka. Thanks, Amber for featuring Chaka for "Female Fridays". ❤
my fave from them is "stay". my dad wore it out on the stereo.
Chaka has many great jams. You can't go wrong with any pick. This was written by Stevie Wonder.
"Sweet Thing" is a great song to check out next. I also suggest another singer that you have only done once: Roberta Flack. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a must listen. Absolutely beautiful. 😎👍
Chaka Khan and Peter Cetera did do a duet called Feels Like Heaven.
I love that song
That was my maternal grandmother’s favorite song after the Isley Brothers’ ‘It’s Your Thing’.
HUGE hit back in the 70s. All over radio. Rufus (Chaka was the lead singer) were just getting their careers started. Also...."Tell Me Something Good" was written by the GREAT Stevie Wonder. Iconic all around....
I was a funky little seven year old when this song came out and I've been loving it ever since!
Now, that there is a song with two full scoops of Funk.
Chaka Kahn and Rufus! This was a break out song! I first saw them on SOUL TRAIN! You should hear her jazz concert with George Duke 2009 at North Sea Jazz Festival.
Yes! As others have already said, this isn't a duet. The group was called "Rufus featuring Chaka Khan". She became their lead singer in 1972. She recorded a solo album in 1978, reunited with Rufus, recorded more solo projects as well as music with the group before finally leaving Rufus in 1983. Chaka has won 10 well- deserved Grammys. So, yes...please check out more of her music! It will be well worth the time. ❤
Here are a few suggestions:
"You Got the Love"
"Sweet Thing"
"Everlasting Love"
"Once You Get Started"
"I'm Every Woman"
Whatcha Gonna Do for Me"
"Roll Me Through the Rushes"
"Hollywood"
"I Feel for You" (by Prince)
"Ain't Nobody"
Tres cool! I always liked this song ,but had no idea it was the AMAZING Chaka Kan!! What a stellar woman she was! Been crushin on her for a Muskoka minute! 😂😂❤
There's an amazing video on YT with Chaka Khan and Prince in London singing and playing "Sweet Thing" - it will give you all the goosebumps 🥰🥰
Love you all my lifetime is Shakos best work I think. Came out around the same time as Natalie Cole doing the Nat King Cole hit Unforgettable father daughter duo. You love Shaka. I love Shaka. Do yourself a favor and let "Love you all my lifetime" broaden your love for her. I heard it on the radio when I lived in Oahu. I drove straight to the record store after to buy that cassette. Beautiful Song.
Oh Yeah!!! Been waiting for this one. Another huge hit written by Stevie Wonder, this time for Chaka and Rufus. If you want to hear them rock out, try "You got the Love" from the same album.
Can't believe haven't done this. One of my all time favs!!
It’s not “ Duet with Chaka and Rufus’ , Chaka was the lead singer of the band Rufus from the early 70’s to the early 80’s, probably one of the most legendary Funk /R&B bands that pop lovers have obviously never heard of. Looks like you guys have finally fell into the Rufus and Chaka Khan Era rabbit hole! More? Sweet Thing, Once You Get Started, Packed My Bags , at Midnight , Stay, Do You Love What You Feel, Jigsaw, Please Pardon Me, Hollywood, and more! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Oh I know I’ve requested this one sometime ago and many others as well,,, much appreciated 🎼🔥❤️ man this beat is so laid back and in the pocket 🥁🎸💯 she’s also done original Sweet Thing which Mary j. Bilge covered 👍🏼
One of THE funkiest tracks ever laid down!
This song was a big hit when I started college the fall if '74. I had to buy the album.
All sorts of Oklahoma references in today’s attire. We are traveling home to the Reservation we were raised in for the holidays.
Always enjoy your videos!
Safe travels!
I love this funky song, with the fantastic voice of Chaka and the great band Rufus. 🎶🎶🎶👍🙋♀️
Chaka was my first crush! Still Love her 50 years later!
Would love to see y'all play Billy Preston, the"5th Beatle". Nothing From Nothing. Saw him live in 75, and he is truly great. He played keyboards on many Beatles songs....
This video is from the time when they were just called “Rufus” (1974) before they added Chaka’s name to the front of it. This song was on their Rags to Rufus album in 1974.
Like Gloria Estefan a decade later.
You also did her appearing on Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love” video and providing vocals on the track.
Music of my youth I’m 60 I love the vibe of this song!
Murph and The Magictones!
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Oh my. Ya'll actually did the good version of a song first before cover versions or live version. Bravo. 😊 This is Rufus with lead singer Chaka Khan. She will start doing solo later in the 70s 😊
Rob Squad.
This is early Chaka Khan with the band Rufus. Check these tracks out for your appreciation.
YOU GOT THE LOVE,
DANCE WITH ME,
& I'M EVERY WOMAN is a must. There is a cover by Whitney Houston that I believe that Chaka sings the backing vocals. I could be wrong.
Keep going and enjoy the music.
You know this was playing on all the radio stations and in all the clubs 😅 ✌️Peace ☮️ and Love❤Gary😊❤ Chaka Khan❤& Rufus 😂
The song you were referring to that she did a duet with another singer wasn't Peter Cetera but with Steve Winwood on Higher Love.
She was with Steve Winwood- Higher Love ❤
This song was so popular. I still love it!! Great reaction. Please, do more from her.
Stompin at the Savoy is the greatest live album ever recorded in my opinion. It shows how great they were as a live band and you can hear how much of a good time the audience was having.
That's baby making music right there.😍
Chaka Khan and Peter Cetera do have something in common. Both hail from Chicago. Funky bass and talk box, great combo. Chaka takes it over the top.
Chaka Khan is the female vocalist at the end of Chicago's "Take Me Back to Chicago". A great collaboration!
she was on a song with Steve Winwood that you did. tony Madden used a talk box with the guitar.
Rufus was so great! "You've Got the Love" is also terrific.
and "Once You Get Started". There a Midnight Special performance of that...they like that show.
Over dubbed from the studio recording. Still a great woman, with a great stage presence. Loved it from the very first time I heard it when it first came out.
try 1980s Song...
"i feel for you"
by CHAKA KHAN.
❤ 🎉 ❤
Such a groove!! You have to do Sweet Thing and Do You Love What You Feel!
Rufus was the name of the band. Not a person. Not a Duet. Check out her song the original "I'm Every Woman". The video shows Chaka singing ALL parts.
Terribly I might add.. ugh her voice is gross
Well that just goes to show how much you know about Rufus Rufus is the white dude the keyboard player duh come on if you're a real Rufus and Chaka Khan fan you should know that
That just goes to show how much you know about Rufus Rufus is the leader of the white dude who is the keyboard player if you're a real Rufus and Chaka Khan fan you should know that
@@RonaldWilliams-lp3bg Rufus is an American funk band from Chicago best known for launching the career of lead singer Chaka Khan. They had several hits during their career ...
@@RonaldWilliams-lp3bg Such an arrogant reply and to be WRONG on top of it.
"Rufus featuring Chaka Khan is the gold-selling fourth studio album by the funk band Rufus and Chaka Khan, released on the ABC Records label in 1975."
"I'll Be Good To You" A duet performed by Chaka and Ray Charles feat. no other than Quincy Jones. The original was performed by the Brothers Johnson. I would highly recommend the (Good For Your Soul Mix) version to the song.
