For knowing what kind of engines the aliens use, astronomers can do spectroscopic analysis on the drive plume to determine what it's made of. So not only would we be able to tell that it's fusion, we should be able to determine which specific reaction they are using and what efficiency they are getting.
@@Inglonias that requires knowing how massive the spacecraft is, which would have to be an arbitrary guess until enough physical material can be analyzed to know its density.
@@nnelg8139 There are many ways to infer the mass of an unknown object based on it's orbit, though that is admittedly easier if an engine isn't constantly changing it's orbit, and it can sometimes takes days or even weeks of observations to infer the orbital and spectral properties of an object. You can actually figure out the mass of an object without knowing it's density - in fact, finding the density of an irregular stellar object is extremely difficult, and likely one of the last things you would figure out through long distance observations.
@@r3dp9 it is impossible to determine the mass of an object from its response to gravitational forces, as the acceleration is constant regardless of its mass. So you could only figure out its mass either from its effect on other bodies (only viable if it has a planet-sized mass) or its response to non-gravitational forces, i.e. the thrust of the drive. So it comes to a circular dependancy on that front. And unlike with asteroids, where we can infer their internal composition by looking at the surface, we can make no assumptions about what the inside of the alien ship is like. Is their hull 1mm thick, or 10cm thick? Are the internal spaces unpressurized, or full of liquid H2O? A 9900% error bar on mass is completely unworkable.
Hm... After thinking about it more, it may be possible to determine the mass of the spacecraft indirectly by first measuring the doppler shift of drive plume, allowing us to measure its momentum and thus the reaction force being applied to the spacecraft in the form of thrust. Divide that by the observed non-ballistic acceleration, and you get mass.

Knowing the engine technology from the long range is actually a legitimate point, I'm very impressed the game included it. Currently we look at stars and viewing the light spectrum alone can give us a ton of information on the temperature, the chemical composition, just masses of information. The same technique would transfer instantly towards engines, and knowing the temperature, the chemical composition, the velocity of the exhaust (doppler shift), we could make a very good determination as to what technology the engine is using. Of course that doesn't mean we can make the engine ourselves, very far from it, but we can certainly estimate its characteristics reasonably well.
