This is heartbreaking, how excited Genndy sounds making this, and then getting booted off.
HooNose2009 He didn't get booted off, he just left because he didn't like the fact that Sony Pictures wanted it to be better by making it worse.
That's Sony's loss. Popeye was met with almost unanimous enthusiasm, and the Emoji movie was doomed from the start. Just the concept screamed lazy pandering. Now they got a 6% on Rotten Tomatoes and no Genndy.
I don't know why execs don't get that a good story, good animation, and good writing will always be better received than a bad Inside Out clone riddled with product placement. They gambled on something that everyone but themselves knew was a bad idea because of all that sweet nonexistent marketing potential. "We'll make a movie about emojis! Kids love emojis, right! The chart says yes!" Meanwhile, everyone else says no.
Genndy is an exceptional, well-known animator with decades of experience. He did Hotel Transylvania, he knew what he was doing. Sony should have let him release the version he wanted. Even if it would have been just "okay," that would still be miles ahead of this trash.
They don't care. They'll probably make tons of money off of DVD sales, all of which will be from parents that just want their kid to shut up for five minutes.

And here I was 1 hour ago watching Popeye related animations and this video, then I check my Facebook and what has the Comicbook page posted? "Looks like Popeye might not be happening".
How depressing is this, I listen to Tartakovsky talk about how he was destined for this film, and not long after, I read he's moving onto more "original" projects and helping with Hotel Transylvania 2.. Like, I'm all for that new film, but this is just depressing to put all this together..

I read that Genndy walked away from the project after 3 years because, even though he liked the final result, it was not enough up to date for Sony and instead of ruining a character he enjoyed he just left.

Eh. I wouldn't mind replacing Tom- he honestly doesn't sound very Popeye-ish. And you know, they cast a guy who was called a 'flavor of the month' last time they made a Popeye film, and that worked out rather well.

That movie was never cancelled for The Emoji Movie, the movie was never made and unreleased because of development hell. Which same goes for Medusa, which will no longer be directed by Lauren Faust (developer of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and the DC Super Hero Girls TV show).
After 2 years the animation is still incredible, you should not have interrupted his production. The Popeye character deserves to be updated to a new trait that Genndy Tartakovsky could do. It is a great loss that has not ended.

(Side note: in other terms cuphead is kind of like king features training of working on a character inspired by the ones of the 1930s and now they’re working on a character who was from the 1930s.)

Only took me a few seconds to know who was voicing Popeye. Hilarious, love all of his voice acting roles, and this one is really great.

MrMovieLover He's doing more of his Ice King voice than spongebob, Ice King is like a tone deeper than bobs lol. If this is to be a young version of popeye I can totally see it. If he was to stay, and in future productions as an older popeye he would have to make the tone a bit more lower and kinda add a sort of slight mumble to it.

Having seen the leaked animatic, Sony were complete idiots to cancel this film. Even in an unfinished state, the film is incredible.
I think one main issue with Sony making this movie was that Popeye is not a property that targets kids much nowadays. But I feel if they gave it a chance I think this would have revitalized Popeye for young kids. Sad to see it not come out but hey... At least the animatic was great!

It would be a good fit for Paramount Animation since it had a major rebrand and it would reunite Popeye with that mountain that shows up in the beginning of his cartoons
But Popeye is a still a Turner-Warner Bros. character, so it will fit in the WB Animation lineup really

It's not a cat - that's Jeep, a magical animal which became part of Popeye canon a long time ago.

One minor detail I noticed isn't present, Popeye's pipe. That's iconic, nearly as much as his over-sized forearms, love of spinach and punching badguys.

This looks fantastic! Genndy is definitely the right man for this! Every scene, especially the one with Eugene the Jeep, was hilarious and felt like an old Popeye cartoon. She may have been a temp voice, but Grey DeLisle makes a good Olive Oyl. Can't wait to see what you guys have in mind for the actual movie.
I'm so sad that this is cancelled. Genndy clearly has so much passion for the character, it was something he really wanted to do. It makes me very sad, especially with what it was scrapped in favour of... (but that's a different rant for a different day)

Saw the animatic and I would've loved this movie as a kid and even now as an adult I enjoyed it. The old rubber hose cartoon style is so fun to watch in a modern context.

To those complaining about his missing tattoo, pipe, etc., they said this isn't a trailer (even though it feels a lot like it), it's only an animation test. Plus, maybe test is a story focusing on the life of a younger Popeye before he became the spinach eating badass we always pictured him as.
I personally like this animation style. It really brings back the memories of hand drawn animation.
I'll be looking forward to more of this in the future
2:12 is one example of why I love Sony Picture's animations. Just like Flint Lockwood's sidemouth in "Cloudy", Olive's gasp, where the corners of the lips go past her head, is such a simple drawing to do, but I'm wondering how the heck they managed to rig it so nicely. It definitely isn't the standard way of modelling a mouth in 3d. They're combining the best elements of 2d and 3d, so that the CGI doesn't interfere with the charm of cartoony drawings.
Good to know that this project is being revived with Genndy as lead supervisor, I would love to see his dream film cone to light properly

for those that are complaining about the tats or the voices, this is just an animation test, just to show what they can do with it and all that. For all we know the final product could be everything we want or could be all wrong. This DID capture the heart of Popeye though. We just gotta wait and see what the actual trailer looks like

Sniper Melon Well, that's pretty much the ONLY think that's visually different to make him seem younger. He's still a sailor, still his face looks as in the cartoons... I don't know, I think they just took the pipe and tattoos and added these HUGE eyes, to make him "cute".

These comments are bewildering. Its full of people sore about remakes and those surprisingly hardcore Popeye fans who are obsessed over the details such as the lack of a pipe or tattoo. This man is bringing back life to a classic. He's so talented and the animation looks fresh and exciting. Just as he grew up with Popeye, I grew up with Genndy's cartoons (Dexter's Lab and Samurai Jack) and I have full faith in this work.
A new live-action Popeye movie was just announced. We already had one before. Why can’t we have a fully animated movie?

It will never fail to amaze me how talented all of those who are involved in making animation can be, from animators to voice actors.
I love how they stay true to the original, but those animation physics.. god it's fucking incredible, and even the character designs.
The fact that SPA cancelled this for the EMOJI MOVIE is one of the biggest mistakes ever made in human history.
It's not too late, Sony. Tartakovsky is only getting better, and he was already a genius when he started working for you. Make this movie, save some major face and get back in the race!

Wow I cna't get over how ACTIVE the animation is. I really really dig this. If the movie is anything like this I'll definitely pay money to see it!
I really like the animation here, it looks just like one of the old cartoons, and for something that isn't final, this looks great. Also, don't get mad because he doesn't have his pipe or tattoos yet guys, SonyAnimation said it's an origin story. He does look a lot younger in this test animation. Also, Eugene was adorable in this. Keep up the great work, I can't wait to see the final thing.

It's still honestly a little surreal coming back to this and finally knowing all the context behind the drawings, color theory artworks, the animation test itself, and even the brief glimpses of the sky pirates that was shown off in this video. The animatic itself was already beautiful, but I could tell from all the extra stuff that it was gonna look even beautifuller.

Unicorn Warriors Eternal features a lot of the energy from this little concept they made! Tartakovsky and DeStefano both admit that a lot of the energy from this movie came out in UWE.
Yeah, just a scene alone is better than a Unicorn Warriors Eternal. I didn’t like that one very much and I’m thinking of myself like who exactly is the show for is the animation looks terrible not sharp enough no offense.
BRING BACK POPEYE'S CORN COB PIPE, ANCHOR TATTOOS, AND THE SPINACHK. (and no, that's not a typo.) Popeye isn't Popeye without those 3 basic design points. As long as he never smokes anything in it, there's no harm in the corn cob pipe. In fact, make it blow soap bubbles, but do NOT get rid of it!
I have never been more excited for a Popeye movie than I am right now. This is some of the GREATEST cinematic animation I've seen in a long time.
