Stinky bass line has me hysterical because I’m five. (I think people are taking my comment as sarcastic, it isn’t not. I merely stating I will laugh at farts like a child no matter how old. I also think it may have been that I forgot to put the 0 at the end because I was fifty at the time of writing it lol)

I understand the concept and use of triggers, but I have a question though. What's the point of buying a hell of a good sounding drumset if you're gonna use triggers?

    • its_leiraa

Most drummers who use triggers only ever use the bass drum triggers, and on top of that, they only do that because it's damn near impossible to get an audible sound out of a kick drum when playing 250+ bpm. Obviously you can do it with enough effort, but because of how demanding touring and live shows can be, it's simply more practical to use triggers

    • Lapin Rouge
      Lapin Rouge Рік тому

Almost all recorded songs use samples along with whatever you’re recording. Also, triggers can make streaming/recording much easier while not losing the feel you get playing your actual set. Those are the first two that come off the top of my head, at least

  • Stefan Raspl

Great video! However, I believe the "cheating" allegation is not that folks using triggers can play faster than they could without, but rather that a lot of drummers can't hit as hard when they play fast. I.e. they can technically play at a high speed, but it wouldn't sound good anymore (or rather inconsistent, maybe?) without triggers.

  • Sean Alexander
Sean Alexander 2 роки тому +5

Triggers are great. It can be used like re-amping guitars and such. You can record a MIDI performance of a live drummer, and then go back and change the sounds. You can add electronic drums to your acoustic kit without having an electric kit or creating a hybrid. It's a win/win.

  • DoomTobi
    DoomTobi 6 років тому +1181

My problem with triggers isn't that they are cheating, but that many drummers produce a ultra precise but ultra boring drum sound with them. They kill all the dynamics and take all the bass out of their bass drum. I like a more natural sound.

    • WaleraRigid

@Notaliberal Fromcali it depends on settings. Triggers can give dynamic sound like real drum.

@Notaliberal Fromcali Yes, but you try to do it clean with triggers at 250+ bpm. Let's hear it. Hint: it's not as easy as you think it is.

I love the creative use of technology, but these speed metal guys are like cyborgs: half human, half machine. If you took away all the triggers, you wouldn't even be able to hear the drums because it's physically impossible for a kick beater to move that fast and still create any volume.

Isn't the claim to them being "cheating" the fact that you can tap the kick drums much softer and still get the sound to trigger? Thus not needing as much stamina as doing it full-force on acoustic drums to get that same consistent sound...you can program the trigger module to deliver the full volume sample at a much lower threshold.

While you have to hit every note to get the trigger sound, you can hit it at any strength, which can cause some problems. If you are playing with triggers all the time, it can make you play weaker and weaker because the trigger react to any touch of the drum. So if you are playing "trigger mode" on drums without triggers, it's going to sound weak and dull, at least if you're going 230bpm on double kick, for example. Point is, that triggers can teach players to be lazy with the strength of each stroke and completely destroy a players dynamic.

Hold up a second though, if you can sample anything with triggers, can't you sample the same bass hit to a Tom and "cheat" your way through bass rolls? Also, is it possible to replicate a full bass hit with just a minor tap of the actual drum, and wouldn't that count as a cheat too?

I've been watching drum trigger videos, and I have one question, I have triggers and I want my snare to sound like the one in korn back in the 90's. When I play, we mix the sound of the trigger with the mic. My question is: does my snare need to be pretty high, even more than the triggers? or Does the trigger is higher than the snare itself? Thanx.-

The reason people have a problem with triggers is not programming in each hit but the triggers attached to each drum head do not detect how hard you hit the drum. For this you can get away with hitting the drums very lightly but fast and then with each detected hit you can sample in really powerful sounding hits.

Hilarious video! Although on why some people think triggering is cheating: its to do with the threshold and dynamics settings. Watch the drum cams of Inferno from Behemoth and you'll see he plays with no power whatsoever. If a microphone was placed in front of the drum you wouldn't be able to hear his kick at all. Some people keep the threshold settings super low but the dynamics at maximum so that they could hit the drum with a feather and you could still be able to hear powerful kick sound. Personally I have no problem with them but thats what I've heard.

glad i saw this video because up until now i believed that triggers made you drum 2x faster..
Like you do one kick and it plays back 2 kicks. so instead of doing 200 bpm you could do 400bpm double bass. probably is still possible in some way i guess but not the definition of drum triggers.

This is a useful video for explaining the basics of triggering, but it didn't answer in anyway the complaints people have about triggers. The reason people complain about triggers is that, no matter what your dynamic level is, the trigger plays the same note/beat. Therefore, you can tap the head with the beater very lightly and still get the same note as if you hit it with every bit of strength you have. There in allowing light notes being played very quickly, without any real control or sophistication. For the record, its only playing when the beater comes all the way back for every note otherwise you just have a very fast nervous twitch.

It's very simple for me, if there are 2 drummers playing a really complex piece of music, one can only play it using triggers while the other doesn't need it, I will consider the one who doesn't need triggers a better drummer.
Not musician, songwriter, but a better natural drummer.
I don't think it's cheating as such always, but it has so much potential to be used as a cheat that it will always have that cloud of 'what if he's programmed it to cheat' for me.

Thanks man. I'm having some e-drum hot spot woes. My Roland PDX-8 isn't satisfying becuase I keep hitting the hot spot. So I tried a PDX-100 but the dead-centre trigger was worse. I kept hitting it and it was LOUD ! Ridiculously tight head didn't help at all. - So here I am looking into buying a cheap acoustic snare and triggering it with a mesh head. Any advice ? I need it to be quiet. That's the only reason I'm using e-drums. It's not for sound effects. I'll use superior drummer when I get the latency down. I'm on quite a low budget by the way. Two toms. No cymbals. No snare. But two bass drums.
This man has his priorities straight.

Calling drum triggers cheating is like calling an electric guitar as opposed to an acoustic one cheating.

About the bass line section, could it be sampled to play any chord progression you'd want?

I never thought of using drum triggers for the bass.
That is a sweet idea as the bass player usually follows kicks pretty closely.

thanks samus. i still think it's a form of cheating though. if a drummer learns how to use his kit the way the greats did in the past, there would be no need for using triggers.

I have a question once: can I use the Roland TM2 in combination with the DDRUM-DDTi as an extension?

I assume people think it's cheating because it makes your sound more precise and you can edit it better, in the same way people hate autotune I guess, though personally as a vocalist I like using autotune as a vocal effect (not to actually fix my voice)
