    About 3 years ago I bought a Milvus 35 mm f/2 and the rubber focusing ring loosened up like an old rubber band. With a little stretching, I can slide my finger under the rubber - that's how loose it is. Zeiss should go back to the knurled metal focusing rings.
    You can get the 135 apo sonnar f/2 classic for about $1000 at KEH. The 135 apo sonnar f/2 Milvus is $1979 at B&H. Optically they are the same design with the same performance. The only differences are the weather sealing, clickless aperture, and supposedly improved optical coating on the Milvus version. For $1K I would go with the classic version.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому

      I'm really disapointed to hear that about your rubber focusing ring. I would report that to Zeiss and see if they won't do something about it. And your point about the Classic vs Milvus is valid. The Classic 135 is a bargain at $1000

    My favorite lens of all time. This is so good that i have 02 copies of the Classic APO Sonnar in both nikon and canon mounts.
    I have compared the classic version to my Sigma 135mm Art and Samyang 135mm f2 lenses directly on same camera on a tripod with mirror lock up and my findings are as follows
    1. Zeiss has the best microcontrast and pop and clearly superior to Sigma and the Samyang.
    2. Sigma is as sharp wide open as the zeiss. Samyang is a close, but not as good wide open.
    3. Zeiss has very slightly better color. Sigma is slightly worse and Samyang has a strong yellow cast to the images that require white balance adjustments in post production,
    4. Sigma has slightly but noticeably smoother bokeh out of all 03 lenses. Zeiss and Samyang very close.
    5. Samyang has the best correction for chromatic aberrations, zeiss is almost as good. Sigma is also very good, but not as good as the other two.
    6. No perspective distortion in any lenses
    7. Samyang is the best value. Sigma is more practical due to AF and f1.8. Zeiss is the better option optically and has the best build quality and feel in the hand by a huge margin.
    I hope this information may be useful to some. Great review Mr. Dustin
    I hope Zeiss will introduce a Milvus 105mm f1.4 lens or an Otus 200mm f1.8 or F2 lens in near future. Once you see the Zeiss rendering, almost all other mass market AF lenses seems like inferior instruments.

      yeah, i had all three as well, i ended up selling all and compromising with the batis, has that zeiss feel with autofocus, plus it's light and 2.8 is more than good enough in most situations, the sigma is way too big and don't like the colours. samyang is the most fun though.

    Hi Dustin. I bought this very same lens based upon your original review of it and several online reviews. It is a magnificent lens and delivers, as you say, images of stunning quality. I do astrophotography (with my Nikon D850) and when I have used this lens on a tracking telescope mount, the images are fantastic, with no distorted star images to the very edge of the field. I love the manual focus - smooth as silk. I also bought the Milvus 35mm F1.4- a stunningly good lens (again, I watched your original review of that lens, too), ideal for landscapes (and starscapes). You have reminded me, that it's time I took my Milvus 135mm out for some photographic joy. Thanks for a great (and nostalgic) review!

    Wow love the imagery from this lens . It’s like old school meets new school . 135mm is a favorite focal lenght of. One that I rarely use. I was going through some 70-200 photos today and surprisingly 135mm was the focal lenght I was shooting at . In this modern day of eye af I’d love to see a 75-135 f/1.8 fast af lens made . I shoot live music photography and find f/1.8 a needed f/stop many times . But for portraits this lens also could be super useful . Maybe not that fast is needed but then it lends to low light stuff also . Peace, and another great review

    I recently moved from Fuji X/GFX to Nikon Z for fashion and make-up work. I’d love to see native Z-mount versions of the Otus, Milvus and Batis lenses. There’s no brand that renders pastel colors and skin tones the way Zeiss does in their better lenses (meaning not the Touit line). Probably a great match with that gorgeous 45.7MP sensor in the Z7II. The Nikkors Zs are great too but it with Zeiss you get a special kind of magic sauce. Hard to explain it, until you see in real life. The looks of these Zeiss lenses would also beautifully match the camera body style of the Z7 and Z6 (without the ugly FTZ adapter).

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 роки тому

      Completely agree. Zeiss glass is unquestionably special. They've been really quiet for a couple of years, actually. The last Zeiss lens I reviewed was the Otus 100mm. And yes, the Touit lenses hardly qualify as real Zeiss lenses.

    I have been really surprised with how nice the Laowa 105mm F2 STF lens is. I picked up the Nikon version to adapt to my full frame Sony using the Techart Pro to dial in the focus and it works really well.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому +1

      That's interesting about the Techart application.

    • @OccultDemonCassette
      @OccultDemonCassette 4 роки тому

      @@DustinAbbottTWI It works surprisingly well! Eye AF works with the Techart-Pro as well. Of course it's not as nice as native auto focusing glass, and it doesn't really handle Video AF, but I really enjoy the feel of a manual focus lens and then having the ability to just pre focus a little bit and then let the tech art take it from there is really nice. Another nice thing about the tech art is that it extends the minimum focusing distance of the lens.
      I have some vintage-ish AF lenses from the 90s that I like to play around with occasionally, and I'll sometimes adapt them to my Sony, but I'll put them on the Techart-Pro instead of using an AF adapter because the hybrid phase detect used by the tech art is so much quicker than those 90s AF systems.
      If I had the spare cash, or photography was a profession for me instead of an art hobby, I'd love to pick up a GFX system since they have a Techart AF adapter for it now. Apparently a lot of vintage glass covers the Fuji medium format sensor.
      There is a guy on UA-cam, his channel name is Cory S. Vaughn. He only has like 50 subscribers, but about two weeks ago he uploaded a pretty decent little video about adapting vintage 35mm glass to the Fuji GFX system and he got some really good results. I mainly use it for landscapes the images it produced are spectacular. EVF on the Nikon Z7 makes focusing a breeze, whence compared to my D850 and old D810. I am using the Milvus 1.4/85. It is great when nailing that focus. At 1300g it is very heavy and makes it diffcult in my opinion. (The Milvus 135 is bit lighter, and I wonder why?) The weight is problem for fast focussing.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      Dustin Abbott since the 85 is so heavy and actually too long for me I probably won’t use it very often. I should have bought the 2/35 instead. But I got the 85 very affordable (exhibition model plus rebate). I like the 2/50 is my go to portrait lens. Superb natural looking bokeh.

    Optical the Samyang 135mm f2 is there 100% in sharpness and 95% in color , bokeh and contrast for a fraction of the price . And I dont use it that much for the same reasons , that in itself makes it a more attractive buy when you take the photos per dollar into consideration

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure its 95% - Zeiss color and rendering is better than just about anything. The Samyang is nice and sharp, though. It's not nearly as nice to use, unfortunately, though. No electronics, an inferior focus ring, etc...

    A truly wonderful lens, though one that I simply cannot justify to buy at that price point (unlike the equivalent Samyang at ~400€).
    Something that you touched on is that mirrorless MF confirmation makes these easier to use, but eye detect AF makes them a bit more obsolete, which I agree with.
    However, a wonderful feature on the EOS R is that in manual focus, you can still utilize eye detect with the focus guide, meaning that you don't have to do any of the focus point moving to get the guide where you want it to be, which is something that somewhat mitigates this difference again, at least to me
    You can't just half depress the shutter button, you still have to turn the manual focus ring, but at least the focus point and guide adjusts itself without your input via joystick or touchscreen.

    Staying on topic now, after some time of going out making photographs I found that I’m very fond of longer lenses my favorite being 50 and 135, the latter being the unpopular opinion; everybody’s crazy about wide angles which to me are no easier to use that longer focal lengths.
    Now, the reason why I don’t see the Milvus as an option [for me] is because the EF 135mm f2L exists, cheaper and optically impressive (for a 24 year old lens) plus crazy fast autofocus.

    Hello Dustin, there´s actually an even better focusing aid on the eosR than the focusGuide. Have you tried setting the art style to black and white with yellow focus peaking? Whats this gives you is a black and white viewfinder with yellow peaking on top, its ideal for movement or quick focusing. Also it helps to concentrate more on light, since colors can be distracting.
    The main draw backs of the focus guide is that you still have to position it. Of course that works really well on the eosR in many ways especially with eyeAF, but not that great with movement and action.
    On my Camera the focus peaking and the focus guide are activated on the touch bar left and right touching, sliding is deactivated. Zoom is on the AF Button, it instantly magnifies where the focusGuide is positioned. ArtStyle is on another button, for quick changes.
    Maybe this helps :-)

    hi , regarding 135mm milvus , i found some good offers in ebay that induce me to buy for my canon mirrorless body.. i already own milvus 85mm f1.4 and loved that lens very much in all aspects.. especially when using with the help of focus guide option , i didnt feel any issues with focusing manually.. so i consider to get this 135mm.. i came to know that focusing manually will differ/impact in focal length increasing.. if manual focusing is almost same experience with both the 85mm and 135mm , i will buy 135mm.. if manual focus needs more precise and difficult than 85mm f1.4, then i will reconsider.. what is your suggestions ? thanks , suresh

      Focusing won't be much different than your 85mm. You've got great manual focus aids on your mirrorless body, so it will be fine.

      I own that as well, and nice as it is, I'll reach for my classic Zeiss ZF.2 every time. The 135/2L, sadly, is dusted more than shot.

      I don't have the 135L anymore, and when I compared it to either the Sigma, Zeiss, or Samyang 135mm, it doesn't show very well in terms of the raw optics (the newer lenses are much better!). I do think the images it produces are often beautiful, however, so I think it is more about the "sum of its parts".

      I compared them back in the day, and yes, optically, the Zeiss is superior. The Sigma is more practical, however, with AF.

    Did you get a chance to compare milvus against the RF lenses I know there is no direct comparable range available yet but as far has micro contrast,Image sharpness what is your take.I bought RF 28-70 even though everyone gave rave reviews but I couldn’t see much difference when comparing images against RF 35mm 1.8 I respect your review and would love to hear your take on RF quality when compared against Zeiss.Thanks

      I found the Canon RF 50mm F1.2L quite "Zeiss-like", but it is true that there is something about Zeiss optical glass that remains special. The quality of the color and rendering is fantastic.

    Hello Dustin, Thank you for the great reviews, best on the net. Knowing the Milvus 135mm is not a macro lens, how does it fair when using it for closeup of flowers and such? How does it compare to the Milvus 100m. Thank you for your time and help.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому

      The difference in magnification is double for 100M (0.25x vs 0.50x). The Milvus 135 has better IQ, though, and actually resolves fine details well even at MFD. Throw an extension tube on there and you've got near-macro performance.

    Its interesting to see your video now - given too the usage of tracking & AF as the dominant mode of photography/videography. These kinds of lenses with a combination of compression, smaller MFD, & wide aperture demand more composition as well as when to use the extra fine DOF. I do think that the zeiss APO sonnar lenses have a very high optical quality-design & during the film SLR era 135mm was a very popular focal length. However I bought the cine samyang cine lens last wk as I prefer the declicked aperture dial & find the MF dial very nice to use. Its lighter than the zeiss-sony & sigma & a bit more magnification but less than the new AF Samyang. In terms of optics on the sony a7r4 it is stellar & there is no yellow cast - micro contrast & detail too is excellent. I doubt there is any major optical difference between these lenses as both designs have floating elements and the samyang coatings are also impressive & being tweaked. I also think that sensors have improved so much and the way they process light frequencies are vastly improved as is processing software. For MF - with the newer EVF-s a delight to use. I also find MF trains the eye and the visualization process though AF is far less demanding and the new samyang AF lens promises both ergonomy & also gives a limiter. It would be interesting to see a comparison review once you have the lens in your hands.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 роки тому

      Samyang's 135mm option was very strong optically, so I'm not surprised that the optics housed in the nicer build of the cine version are pretty special.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Zeiss was - to the best of my knowledge the first to make this kind of a lens. They made it AF for Minolta/Sony A mount in 2006 aprox. The merger of Konica & minolta led to a lot of innovative design - from AF to early IBIS etc. Eventually during that period they sold to sony. Zeiss then made the apo-sonnar lens some years later for canon/nikon but MF - probably optically more tweaked & APO. Both Nikon & Canon did not have anything with this kind of MFD & optics. Samyang started of as a cheap lens company in the 70s. One of their 135s they put in a close focus switch. Design was v interesting - optics was trash. But they had developed their optical knowhow so when they started making MF lens their goal was to give a certain optical quality at much less the price. I think one can expect some excellent value lenses from them. Also if canon/nikon come up with a similar lens it will be exorbitantly priced. On a list note I hope you use the Zess lens more as it is meant for the modern high res cameras!

    Are you selling this lens after having reviewed the Sony 135mm GM? I saw some of your images on eBay connected to a post of this lens, so I thought that it might be you. The name of the user is also quite familiar. Maybe you fell in love with the phenomenal 135mm GM? It really is an exceptional lens as well. I’ve been thinking of buying it for some time, but I think, I’ll go for the Milvus, though. It can be found a bit cheaper, especially when already having an adapter, and I’m a Zeiss lover like you. I will probably try out the Milvus 15mm as well, but if the corners are soft as some have complained about (there aren’t really that many revieww, so it’s hard to judge, and the construction of the lens is a bit old), I will probably sell it again and go for the Sigma 14-24mm DN. But I generally just like the look and feel of both the handling and images of Zeiss, so it wouldn’t hurt trying them out first.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому

      Hi there - yes, that is me, and yes, it would be to fund the GM. I love the Milvus, but I'm shooting mirrorless exclusively now, and would have to use it via adapter on whatever camera I would use. The GM just makes a lot of sense for my portrait and event work.

    • @carbon6372
      @carbon6372 4 роки тому +1

      Dustin Abbott Yeah, and it’s a proper lens to replace the Zeiss. Until this point, there really haven’t been any 135mm lenses that could replace the images of the Milvus, in my opinion. The doorstop for me is having to use an adapter as well. It adds heft and makes the combination more front heavy. But that’s actually not my main concern. I care a lot about how my equipment slides together, just like how the Milvus and Otus lens hoods slide together with their respective lenses. It just looks ridiculous when attaching lenses from a mount to another, especially the bigger lenses. When using the Zeiss lenses on something like the Canon 5D Mark IV, the combination looks really slick. I always liked the design of Canon’s DSLRs and Zeiss’ lenses. The Sigma Art lenses also look fantastic on Canon but not so much on Sony. Again, that’s just me. Maybe Zeiss will release some nice lenses for the RF mount.

      Spoiler alert: it's as sharp and well-corrected as the Milvus although, subjectively, the colours may not be quite as saturated, but it has fast and accurate auto-focus which may account for its higher price.

  • @wilhelmrosenthal1305

    I will not be amongst those who woefully accuse the Milvus 135 of not being an “upgrade” to the Classic APO. The Milvus is quite in fact more robust, weather sealed, updated coatings and an overall more modern look and feel.
    However once I decide to go for a 135mm focal length I regard the tool as something more “specialized” rather than useful, and in that regard the design of the classic APO while not as practical it is far sexier to hold, and thus brings joy to use it. The metal grooves of the focus ring really impart it with a special feel to the touch and overall experience. Just my 0.2
