Hi Bob, make sure you are not selecting the centre line of vertices when running the symmetry command. But before you do that, in a front camera select all the vertices down the center line and snap them to the grid at zero, make sure all center line vertices are x=0 and snapped to the grid,
@@AnimatorArtistLife @Animator Artist Life Thankyou, yes I have checked this to be exact. All vertices are aligned to the centre grid line at Zero world space, and I use front cam to select. Really stumped on why it doesn't copy to the other side, although saying that, it does work with primitive objects. Therefore it is model relative. I got a character from c3d and it is the most unprofessional trash I've ever worked with in my life... Anything C3D produces can easily be made better without it. Ran into a problem that took me a while to fix so I'll share the soloution for anyone with the same issues. I cut my model in half to fix the topology and after mirroring I found that half my vertices were off. Make sure to have your pivot point in the middle of your character and also have your middle vertices set on 0 on the x plane, then duplicated special and use the combine tool to be symmetrised
Hi Harrison, you always need to make sure your center line of verts are snapped exactly on the X plane to zero. You can go to a front view select them all and scale in a few times, then just hold the X key for grid snapping and snap them all together. And yes your pivot point should always be on exactly world zero. if you have moved your geo, you can use the INSERT key to snap your pivot point back to the grid center. Then just use the Mirror tool with a low weld setting
After the "ModelClean" action, one shoe is completely black. All parts, that is. The shoe, the laces and the shoe tongue. On the other shoe, only the shoe tongue is black. Whar can i do? Thank you for your help!
Hey, this just means your normals are reversed (basically its inside out).. probably came from mirroring and negative scaling. Its an easy fix though... just select the black geometry and under your modelling menu go to > Mesh display > Reverse to reverse the normals back again the right way.. Let me know this fixes it for you, thanks
@@AnimatorArtistLife Hello! I have the same issue but the reverse won't work because the black areas are more like spots, not faces. I've tried unlock normals, set to face-> soften edges, soften/harden edges-> change angle. Nothing is working, Do you have any tips, please?
Thanks for sharing this helpful video. I have a question please. How to add facial rig to character that is NOT rigged with Advanced skeleton.(ex:Mixamo body rigged) There is an option do this job in Advanced skeleton section "Face" called "Advanced" If you can explain it please💝💝💝
I'm having an issue where I subdivide my mesh or combine it to new geometry, my rig becomes very laggy when I begin to pose it. Is there a way to fix this?
Hi, You should never subdivide your mesh too much it will make it lag for sure, leave that for render time. You can select your geometry and press the "3" key to smooth, the render. Or set up a smooth ode with a slider connected to the subdivision levels, so you only animate on zero, then up to 1 or 2 for rendering. Also usually you should not combine your meshes either, it makes it more difficult to add materials and textures you lose the flexibility, I hope this helps I now have a discord community channel just launched if you want to join: discord.gg/g6REvhbWGP 🙂
I am using animation from a Rokoko suit. That suit creates IK Handle animation. The Advanced Skeleton rig seems to work with an FK animation. Question - how do I make a model rigged with AS to use the IK handles that AS creates, to match it up to the Rokoko animation and animate in Maya? VERY frustrated trying to paint weights that match FK to IK and I think I'm missing something. Please advise.
Hi, I've never used a Rokoko suit, so can't help with that specifically. But Advanced Skeleton rigs are fully FK and IK, you can switch and blend between the two easily. Select the cross-shaped control next to the arms and change the IK/FK value to 0 or 10 and you will see it blend, and swap out the controllers for you. as for weight painting, I'm not quite sure what your issue is, you paint the weights on the joints, not the controllers, so the weighting would be exactly the same whether you are in FK or IK mode, they do not have separate weights. I hope this helps, thanks
@@AnimatorArtistLife I’ve found the problem. It’s some kind of the same name like “belt_1 ,belt_2” I have tried rename it but it still the same so I separated it from model and add it later after clean geo. Hey, that means that all the vertices on the center line are not at exactly zero on the X plane, they are not snapped to the grid. If you go to a front view and wire frame, zoom right in, maybe around the nose area you will probably see one vertice off center Its easy to fix 1) Go to a front view camera and hot the “4” key for wireframe mode (make sure grid is on) 2) Select ALL the vertices down the center line 3) Double click the move transform tool to bring up the options 4) Go down to Move snap settings and TURN OFF “Retain component spacing This allows vertices to be snapped separately from each other 5) move the selected vertices just in the X a little to active X only moving 6) Then hold down X key for grid snapping, middle mouse click the center grid line and they will all snap into place on the X only This will snap ALL the verts to the center line and now the symmetry tool will work You can do a single vertice at a time, but this is much quicker Hope that helps 🙂
Hi, if you are applying for rigging roles then of course they want to see your rigging skills, how you built a rig from scratch. If you are applying for character animator roles, then it doesn't matter, they are not interested in how the character was rigged, just the acting, body mechanics, weight of your animation. Thanks
Thanks for these great tutorials. My shaders changed & are now lighter & washed out. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this? Tried reloading the files but that didn't work. Thank you.
Hi, glad you liked them. re your shaders, are you using Arnold? if so the materials do look washed out in the viewport but render ok. in the mini icon box above each viewport view there is an option to change the exposure or gamma of the viewport try that... or to properly fix it, look into your colour management preferences. I mostly use Vray which doesn't have this issue. did you make it to the end of the series? thats excellent. Did you make a tutorial about how you made your light group? Or is there a way we can download the character rig you made? I'd like to know how you made those eye sparkles that are lighting on the eyes!
Hey, no I haven't made a lighting lesson yet, it was a fairly simple 3 point light set up.. if you google three-point lighting you'll get lots of info. This has approx 4 lights I think. I generally use HDRi dome with hdri lighting image, plus some extra light. One position fairly close to the face for the eyes, You can use the light relationship manager to tell this light to only affect the eyes or any geo you want . If you need more help you can join the private facebook group 👉 facebook.com/groups/animatorartistlife/ also sorry this is a private rig I built not for giving away, thanks
What happens if I select clean model, it creates a separate group called uvAssign with a selection of objects. Does that mean my model isnt clean of problems with the uv?
Hi, the clean model feature in Advanced skeleton, effectively exports your model as an obj then reimports it, so all pivot points, history are cleared and all geo set to world zero. It remebers all your UV layout and materials but it doesn't touch or fix any UV issues you have. You need to manually fix them. If you need more help you can join the private facebook group 👉 facebook.com/groups/animatorartistlife/
Hi sorry for the late reply, you should delete all history before doing your UVs, thanks. Ive started a new discord community of you'd like to join? discord.gg/g6REvhbWGP 🙂

You can rig asymmetrical characters. For the body and limbs if they are not symmetrical, like a weird creature, you can select the limbs and add a label in the advanced skeleton labels menu of "NO MIRROR" then you place each limb separately for each side, making sure no mirror label is applied to each. For an asymmetrical face, please see the advanced skeleton youtube channel, the creator has a video on this, I will try and do one at some point also, thanks
really thank you for your video, I would like to ask a question. On this video 6:35, it found a couple of vertices which weren't symmetrical, and I tried the same steps as you did on this video to try to symmetrize those but after doing all this, and check again, it still shows the same vertices non symmetrical. It seems the symmetrize functions didn't work, do I miss any things?
Hi, that is strange, try making sure all the vertices on your center line are snapped exactly to zero in X to the grid. Also try deleting history on the geo first. Lets us know if you get it sorted, thanks
Hi, yes you can, Xgen is completely separate to Advanced Skeleton, you can use any hair system you like, then import your hair descriptions, or even scalp geometry etc, I would keep the Xgen separately in another file perhaps, and only use for render times. Have a search on youtube for referencing or importing xgen to your rigs. 🙂

Hey, you can rig asymmetrical characters with AS, the creator has a video on it here: ua-cam.com/video/8EtJZPWzyMA/v-deo.html Also, if you just have some small objects like socks and hair that are not symmetrical, you can skin these after, you can select each sock and either >skin cage > copy weights, or select just the deformation joints, or joints close to the sock and bind skin. just like I do with the hair in these lessons. You can even just parent the hair to the head control if its short and doesn't need to deform 🙂

Hey, it's lifetime free but for non commercial use. You can get a freelancers indie license which is also lifetime one off cost, then you can use in any client projects.
Hi, sounds like you don't have the geometry selected. Are you selecting only one piece of geometry in the viewport before running the check? Make sure only select one piece and its in object mode, not face or vertices selection,... right click the geometry and select object mode or F8 till the model wireframe goes green

Hey, can you tell me more exactly what is not working? is the mesh appearing, does the rig controls appear? I use these rigs on multiple computers and even send to my freelance animators and they work fine. If you have referenced in the model, you need to make sure you copy everything to that other computer. Its best to save a "published" version of your rig. you can use the publish feature in AS or import all references, delete skin cage etc and save as a new file

Hey, that means that all the vertices on the center line are not at exactly zero on the X plane, they are not snapped to the grid.
If you go to a front view and wire frame, zoom right in, maybe around the nose area you will probably see one vertice off center
Its easy to fix
1) Go to a front view camera and hot the “4” key for wireframe mode (make sure grid is on)
2) Select ALL the vertices down the center line
3) Double click the move transform tool to bring up the options
4) Go down to Move snap settings and TURN OFF “Retain component spacing This allows vertices to be snapped separately from each other
5) move the selected vertices just in the X a little to active X only moving
6) Then hold down X key for grid snapping, middle mouse click the center grid line and they will all snap into place on the X only
This will snap ALL the verts to the center line and now the symmetry tool will work
You can do a single vertice at a time, but this is much quicker
Hope that helps
🙂
@@AnimatorArtistLife thank you so much! i just mirror back and it fix!
@@pehnutbota Awesome, glad that fixed it for you, I hope you enjoy the rest of the training
Sir, for job is that company allow us to make rigg demoreel using advance skeleton or they prefer manual rigg
Hi, if you are applying for rigging roles then of course they want to see your rigging skills, how you built a rig from scratch.
If you are applying for character animator roles, then it doesn't matter, they are not interested in how the character was rigged, just the acting, body mechanics, weight of your animation.
Thanks
@@AnimatorArtistLife thank you
Thanks for these great tutorials.

One position fairly close to the face for the eyes, You can use the light relationship manager to tell this light to only affect the eyes or any geo you want . also sorry this is a private rig I built not for giving away, thanks
If you need more help you can join the private facebook group 👉 facebook.com/groups/animatorartistlife/
after cleaning some of my model uv is gone
nvm i used to separate multiple objects for the body then i tried to combine them after re-cleaning, it fixed
Hi sorry for the late reply, you should delete all history before doing your UVs, thanks.
Ive started a new discord community of you'd like to join? discord.gg/g6REvhbWGP 🙂
Could you share the model to practice easier?
Hi, sorry unfortunately not, as I built this character for personal projects and I sell still poses in an online shop: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/797836809/png-girl-clipart-cute-girl-clip-art-for
There are a huge range of characters available online if you don't have any only places like turbosquid , CGtrader etc, thanks for watching my tutorials.
can i learn this ik and fk in this series
Hi, this rig will give you IK and FK controls, with a slider value to animate between them
What if the character isnt symmetrical ? Should it be modelled again?
You can rig asymmetrical characters. For the body and limbs if they are not symmetrical, like a weird creature, you can select the limbs and add a label in the advanced skeleton labels menu of "NO MIRROR" then you place each limb separately for each side, making sure no mirror label is applied to each.
For an asymmetrical face, please see the advanced skeleton youtube channel, the creator has a video on this,
I will try and do one at some point also, thanks
@@AnimatorArtistLife Thanks a lot to replying back to this❤️
@@anandupavithran8124 You're welcome, spread the word ! :) more tutorials coming each month
My IK arms don't seem to work. The IK/FK switch is there, it just doesn't do anything? Does anyone else have the same issue?
Hi, when you change teh IK value from 0 to 10, you should at 10 see the icon change to an IK controller, do you see this?
really thank you for your video, I would like to ask a question.
Can i apply this guide with character have x-gen hair?
Hi, yes you can, Xgen is completely separate to Advanced Skeleton, you can use any hair system you like, then import your hair descriptions, or even scalp geometry etc, I would keep the Xgen separately in another file perhaps, and only use for render times. Have a search on youtube for referencing or importing xgen to your rigs. 🙂
@@AnimatorArtistLife very appreciated 🙏i will try and review the results to you

@@AnimatorArtistLife Oh that was kind of my study note LOL
Thanks for good video! I could finish my Ani workshop in success :)
what if the character was not symmetrical will this plugin works i did give a try & i am getting errors. please help @Animator Artist Life
Hey, you can rig asymmetrical characters with AS, the creator has a video on it here: ua-cam.com/video/8EtJZPWzyMA/v-deo.html
Also, if you just have some small objects like socks and hair that are not symmetrical, you can skin these after, you can select each sock and either >skin cage > copy weights, or select just the deformation joints, or joints close to the sock and bind skin. just like I do with the hair in these lessons. You can even just parent the hair to the head control if its short and doesn't need to deform 🙂
@@AnimatorArtistLife wow i truly appreciate you time for responding to me your videous were really helping me a lot . you are the best Sir.
Hi there! How can I get this Model to practice ? Thanks!
Hi Xinyi, sorry this model is not available to the public. I made this for my own projects. But I have a completely free course on how to model your own: VIST:
ua-cam.com/play/PLIV47uRi3f2Ub9INK89HnmkLgmNYjvcL6.html
Is it lifetime free for use or I can get free use for a few days?
Hey, it's lifetime free but for non commercial use. You can get a freelancers indie license which is also lifetime one off cost, then you can use in any client projects.
I get error that selected object isnt mesh as I click model chk button
Hi, sounds like you don't have the geometry selected. Are you selecting only one piece of geometry in the viewport before running the check?
Make sure only select one piece and its in object mode, not face or vertices selection,... right click the geometry and select object mode or F8 till the model wireframe goes green
Hi, thank so much, i from Italy in quaranten, closed in the home, very terribol. Sorry when i can find the same model litol girl you ARE USING IN THIS VIDEO? tHANCK SO MUCH
Hey sorry to here that, we are all in a second lockdown also, but at least we can carry on animating 😉
... regarding the girl character unfortunately I cannot give it away, its my own character I built for projects.
You can find free characters online, or even better if you want to learn to 3d model and build your own character, I have just started a new series of FREE tutorials on it here: ua-cam.com/video/JaeTHW85miI/v-deo.html
i have tried to use the rigged character in another computer its not working please help. @Animator Artist LIfe
Hey, can you tell me more exactly what is not working? is the mesh appearing, does the rig controls appear?
I use these rigs on multiple computers and even send to my freelance animators and they work fine. If you have referenced in the model, you need to make sure you copy everything to that other computer. Its best to save a "published" version of your rig. you can use the publish feature in AS or import all references, delete skin cage etc and save as a new file
@@AnimatorArtistLife @Animator Artist Life the issues was that after i importing it to fbx the nurbs curves were getting deleated please help me
Hey, why are you importing an FBX? The rigs need to stay in Maya format not fbx
From where we can download this model?
Hi Sorry this model is not available to the public, I made it for myself sometime ago. I may release it for sale at some point in the future, thanks
where i dowload this model?
Sorry it's not available. I was thinking of selling it if there was enough interest? If your interested, I also have a blog with free articles I'm building at animatorartistlife.com
dizzy.....
now do it faster
🏎... Ill try! I have to keep at a pace that complete beginners can follow along, thanks
750 bucks for an addon, yikes...
Its free for non-commercial use, then they have a freelancer license, well worth it!
@@AnimatorArtistLife oh nice to know, thanks ^^ BTW, have you tried animating in Unreal Engine 5.4? They are adding tons of cool things, would love to know the opinion of a pro animator (I'm still beginning my journey as 3D artist/animator)
