  • Fred Southwick was a rower prior to the loss of his leg on September 18, 2012. After his above the knee amputation he has continued to participate in Masters Rowing events competing against men his age who all have 2 legs. On September 27, 2018 he raced in the Masters World Championships in Sarasota, FL rowing a double with Don Davis and also competed in the singles event. As part of a promotional campaign, Colten Sikes of Martin Bionics videoed their doubles race. Fred and Don came in 4th out of 6 competitors. In the single Fred finished 9th out of 10 competitors (he didn't come in last!) and he loved the competition. Fred thanks his GAR teammates Jacob, Jen, Kelly, Carla and Scott for their help. And Martin Bionics for their support, creating this video, and for creating a prosthetic socket that has greatly improved his performance. He also thanks Kyra Ketnick of Hanger Prosthetics who created the hinged prosthesis and shoe horn that have allowed him to generate force with his residual limb and compete against Masters rowers with two legs.
