The main problem is going to be getting hold of engines for it. The US has put a lot of pressure on engine suppliers not to offer their newest engines for COMAC models. Without new generation engines, you can't get the efficiency up there. This was a major headache for the ARJ21.

Only a matter of time before China will build their own engines . Cutting dependence on foreign engines

@@gottaseeyuh China has been working on a high-bypass turbofan for decades now and doesn't yet have a product ready to go (my understanding is it's been a development hell project - with everything from problems in sourcing alloys with the right qualities through problems with tooling to competing projects distracting and draining each others resources). I doubt they'll have one ready for the C929 launch, and that's only part of the issue, as getting decent aftermarket support out for engines in the global market is extremely difficult (as Sukhoi found with the Superjet-100). Buyers would definitely be cautious. I think even COMAC itself wasn't banking on a Chinese engine and was hoping to get a reasonably modern western engine, with the Russian PD-35 as an alternate option for sanctioned markets like Iran, Cuba etc. - However trade friction has stymied the western engine and the PD-35 isn't happening any time soon and possibly not at all, given the situation in Russia. It does leave the C929 in a difficult position. I think the aircraft itself is likely a perfectly sound design, but there are just too many headwinds for it to sucessfully breakthrough on the global market.
Personally, I think China should look at leapfrogging conventional jets, just as it's car makers have done, mostly going aggressively for the EV market and somewhat ignoring combustion engine vehicles. Going forward, conventional aero engines are going to die out one way or the other. Focusing a new aircraft based around engines capable of running on 100% SAF or even fuel cells (for smaller aircraft) could be a good way forward, possibly ignoring the west and teaming up with someone like Embraer to share technologies and risk - as well as tap into Embraers know-how in the global civil aviation market.

If 99% of Chinese aircraft can fly 20 000 hours without major incidents airlines will buy them.

It's not the reliability that's really the issue. No one in the industry really doubts China's ability to screw together a reliable airframe. If Chinese engineers are good at one thing, it's mass production of consistent products. The main problem is an airframe manufacturer (like COMAC) is only as good as their relationships with their engine suppliers... and COMAC doesn't have the sort of strong institutional relationships with like like CFM, RR or P&W that Airbus, Embraer and Boeing do. That limits their ability to source and offer the most efficient engines and get decent delivery windows for engine units.
The other issue is that COMAC doesn't have experience with aftersales support in the global market. A lot of airlines remember the problems Interjet, CityJet and Brussels Airlines had when they brought Sukhoi superjets. A perfectly fine aircraft.... when you get the parts for the thing. The rest of the time it was a perfectly fine doorstop, as it sat on the tarmac for months for want of some random yet flight-critical spare part. This is why I think COMAC should look at joint ventures with someone like Embraer to help support their models in the global market. The C919 (the smaller A320 class model) would be a good offering to go along the Embraer E jets, while the E jets offer a quite frankly more efficient take on the somewhat old-school COMAC ARJ21.

China is known for not playing by the rules when it comes to human rights, ethics, etc, that's why they can sell it (they can sell anything) cheaper. Today, with the social media, more and more the world is aware of that. That said (and known), China won't be able to sell it easily everywhere. Certainly they will in places that are part of or sympathetic to the idea of the BRICS, but the developed world is getting aware of what China can do when a lot is in their hands (remember COVID?). When it comes to competition in general, all I have to say is that competition is always good, so good luck to Comac.
