  • Outdoor swimming combines exercise with the invigorating effects of cold-water immersion. Cold water triggers a natural high and stimulates the vagus nerve, known for its anti-inflammatory effects. Regular exposure may help the body adapt to stressors, potentially reducing inflammation associated with depression and improving overall well-being.
OUTSIDE2 is a randomised controlled trial sponsored by Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust (SPFT), funded by NIHR Policy Research Programme (PRP) and affiliated with the University of Sussex and University of Portsmouth. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of an 8-session outdoor swimming course as a supplementary intervention for adults with depression, alongside usual care.
