    This was exactly the issue. BMW wanted €5.500 for this fix but I ended up paying 700 at a local mechanic after asking to fix exactly this. Big thanks for this video!!

    The filter screen bursting off is actually a consequence of the fault, what happens is the central valve fails and instead of only the plunger moving the full assembly inside the valve moves witch eventually burst the filter screen. If you catch them before they burst you’ll find if you press one finger on the screen then press the plunger you’ll feel the full assembly inside moving witch obviously doesn’t let oil flow correctly into the adjusters/sprockets. I’ve changed loads of these very very common.

    Great video thank you. Out of interest, what are the very first mechanical symptoms (prior to appearance of the fault code) you’d expect to hear at tick over cold and hot. The reason I ask is because we have a March 2023 1.5 Countryman Automatic with 9500 on the clock and the engine harmonics are similar to that of a diesel, it appears to ‘throb’ (around the gearbox end) rather than idle smoothly. I really thought nothing of this at purchase private secondhand, because it is three not four cylinder as with our previous 2019 Cooper S Sport automatic, which was like a sowing machine. Although the noise has not increased, the more I hear it the more concerned I become? Your thoughts and advice would be welcome please. Thank you.

    Hi, very informative video. Thank you.
    My Mini Cooper with the B46 engine has rough idle, surging and stuttering under load (e.g. driving up a hill) and I've confirmed plugs, coils, throttle and Lambda sensors appear good. No codes, just periodic drivability issues as described above.
    Based on my research these symptoms could also be caused by a bad vanos electric solenoid. My understanding is that the solenoid is known to fail. But how can I tell a bad solenoid from the screen problem without throwing parts at the issue. I also don't want to have to pull the engine to check the screen. I assume that the oscilloscope trace would not necessarily distinguish between a bad solenoid and a sheared Vanos gear? Very much appreciate your input as the drivability is driving me crazy and I certainly don't want to wait for a more serious failure to occur. Thank you

    Hey there! After replacing spark plugs, coils and injectors i came across this solenoit variation between target vs actual position and i was able to replace the two eletrical vanos actuators on my Mini Cooper S F56 B48 engine. I noticed some slight improvements but the variatons still persist, specially at constant light acceleration.
    Would you say that if i was able to remove the eletrical actuator i could also try and extract/replace the VANOS central valve aswell? If yes what would be the ttool?

    Can you tell me as a customer what is the cost to repair that problem? My bmw has come up with that fault code, I was told it’s a 20 minute fix by one garage and then another garage told me it’s a complete engine strip down. But seen this video and it has enlightened me. Thanks

    • @allmech_BMW_fault_finding
      @allmech_BMW_fault_finding  10 місяців тому +3

      Hello Bryan it depends. A transverse mounted B series takes around 4 hours including re-aligning the injectors as they have a special tightening procedure (see my video about that)
      The rear wheel drive variants unfortunately require engine removal as you cant do anything as the chain is at the back. 20 minute fix refers perhaps to a new solenoid but that wont achieve anything since the solenoid only controls the bit thats faulty inside.
      Its a 2 day job minimum for those engines

    I had an oil leak and I assumed it was coming from the rocker cover, I continued to drive the car as I needed to and was waiting for my garage to have time to replace it and eml light came on and showed a vanos fault. I cleared the code and have replaced rocker cover and gasket to stop oil leak and haven’t had the eml back on and cars driving fine. Could this has been abit of dirty oil on a sensor to throw up that fault or possibly still an issue with the VANOS?

    Hello. I was having two issues, on my BMW F20 116i B38 2016, DTC 118001 & 130304. Both errors came along. For the first one, i have changed the - Fuel tank breather valve - OE code part 13907643106, and now the car is running ok. But i still wonder if that fixes the second error, the "130304 VANOS, exhaust: Control fault, camshaft stuck". I have made since then over 1000 km and the error 130304 doesn't appear anymore. Should i be worried, or considering changing the vanos or the vanos actuator? Thank you!

    Hello, good vídeo!
    I have the same 2 failures codes as yours:
    130304 VANOS solenoid valve, exhaust: Camshaft jammed
    130308 VANOS solenoid valve, exhaust: Position not reached
    But the car is running smoothly and rpm’s are stable, I thing that it has loose some power.(But when you remove the failure code from the car, it drives perfectly 100kms until the failure light comes on.
    The are going to change me the banks solenoid exhaust valve. If the car runs smooth, do you think that it might be the exhaust valve or there will be something brake in the exhaust camshaft sprocket?

    • @allmech_BMW_fault_finding

      So you think that solenoid exhaust valve will be okay? And do you know if solenoid can be checked before buying a new one?

I’ve change the sensor drove it for a little and the EMS light has not come back. Car starts fine, can’t notice anything with the driving, cleared the fault once came back after 5 days. Can you please tell me if I will need to change these bolts. Thank you.

    • @allmech_BMW_fault_finding
      @allmech_BMW_fault_finding  5 місяців тому

      Usually its more the Vanos sprocket broken and sticking but if yours is intermittent you might as well change the actuator bolts. If this doesn't cure it you should change the vanos sprockets. If you have a rear wheel drive Bmw its an engine out job I'm afraid.
      Make sure your I-level is on the latest version as old I-Level is less tolerant to timing drifts.
