I got stuck down at docklands and all of the trams got cancelled. So had to walk through this weather for about an hour, was great fun. I'm still amazed at how fast the weather just changed from hot and humid to mad storms.
256Bonnie it rarely rains in Melbourne like this either. We've been in drought for so long now. This was extreme and I've never seen such huge hail stones. There was a guy on the news jumping on a boogy board making the most of it, lol.
can som1 tell me what this means, last year i saw blue flashes in the sky, like not lightning but covering a few clouds, dark blue flashes but no noise?
Ouch. Storms of that intensity are not that common in Brisbane (though we've had a few in the last week or two). I guess it is way unexpected in Melbourne and your drainage wouldn't be designed to cope. Good luck in the recovery.
@1994megz this is definitely one of the worst storms on record for Melbourne - I wasn't talking about Australia or the world but for Melbourne specifically. In The Age today it stated that already in insurance claims the gross amount has almost surpassed any other storm damage claims in the past. Maybe the CBD coped alright, but for surrounding suburbs, including the one I was in (Knox) it was disastrous - all of our cars are ruined, windows smashed and roof caved in in parts.
Im glad to see the traffic was giving way to the right?? WOW. Pity it wasn't BRIDGE STREET. GET IT?? That is very impressive. As long as no-one was hurt.
I juat posted a video respone (Thunderstorm - Respect The Wind), 4 of the last 5 photos on the video are from this Melbourne Supercell taken near Calder Park, the WNW suburbs and Melbourne were lucky that day a huge wedge Tornado did not continue to develop from a rotating wall cloud. The storm had the potential to produce one of the biggest Tornadoes in Australia.
@cassideyrae this is not actually typical of Melbourne at all, we've been in drought for years. This was more like Sydney weather, with high humidity like they get. The only thing that was like Melbourne was the fact that it came on so quickly. I was saying probably an hour earlier that the storm they predicted was no where in sight. Me and my big mouth ;)
@dippywatcher, natural. Australia has one of the most unpredictable climates on Earth. For example, this time last year (I'm in Radelaide) we had a record breaking heatwave, but this time this year it feels like Winter. I'm still waiting for Summer to hit but I guess we just got an extended Spring. Gotta love this country... So random :)
WOW...never seen this happen in Melbourne Streets before.....OMG....Where did the water come from, the street must be lower than other streets, so the water could flowed down to the street....and it would flow to lower streets.Which is scary....
Mate its spun out hey, just a while ago Queensland was the same with rain, floods and carnage and south aussie was dry as a nuns nasty and stinkin hot. Good ol NSW was comfortable
@paddlepopkid well, yes, i said 'one of the most livable cities'. and remind me, where did the others rank? also who is the sporting nation of the country? who has the best coffee in australia? who has the best music scene in australia? now tell me what somewhere in australia other than melbourne has that can beat that
heel of a storm.....well hopefully, i'll be there next year and have to get use to this kind of stuff. still, i've heard there's no better city in the world than melb.

This happens every 10yrs or so in Melbourne, were like Adelaide, desert winds meet Antarctic winds.
Thanks for uploading.
OMG that is unbelievable. Thanks for posting.
@Killerer YOu pick the right place. Melbourne is awesome. I have been living here for 13 years and loving it :)
Wow! That would completely sweep you! Lucky I'm in Adelaide!

Man, trying to swim in that was awesome. I lost my housekeys though, and the hailstones were not fun

I was sitting in my office on St Kilda Road when it snapped a large willow tree like a match stick. Its still there this morning.

@in2universe lol what do you think it's the aussie style
is that Little Collins street?
is that snow??? I mean.. the hail storm thingy...???
Not often, in summer we get some violent thunder storms but ones like this haven't happened too much.
Yeah they're also getting it in NZ and French polynesia
@lief1250 one downpour of rain generally does not successfully end a 20 year drought...
What is this fixation on "2012"????
LOLL where abouts was that?
were are the branches??????????????
Where was I???? i would get my bordies on and got fro a ride to frankston
Im glad to see the traffic was giving way to the right?? WOW. Pity it wasn't BRIDGE STREET. GET IT?? That is very impressive. As long as no-one was hurt.

But....why would you touch it?
What was this recorded on? quality looks pretty good.

did this happen on friday? or did it happen on saturday
Haha awesome. I started getting hit by hailstones before there was even any rain! Talk about no warning.

Good ol NSW was comfortable

where exactly in melb was this? which intersection?
2012??? Last time I checked the year is 2010??
Who's saying it's fake?
It's not 2012, but the roads were seriously like that in a mater of minutes.
yeah this was fucked up, why does it keep flooding here? it better be landing in the catchments
@SONIZ100 at the corner of Elizabeth and Little Bourke Street. Opposite GPO
Looks like it's rainin' and hailin'
@paulio2293 Actually, it was 20-odd mm in 18 minutes!
@Macintosh3745 I know. Me and many others stucked there for a while.
Atleast the streets got clean.
This is good, right?
'... And in other news, Perth City, Western Australia, had had the hottest and driest summer on record..."
Bloody irony gets me every time.
Woah, whose next Sydney?

OMFG- Of course, the one time I go on holidays I miss all of this! :|

this may sound dumb but it seems fun
i wished this happened in adelaide.
Walking down the street is so ordinary, now swimming would be fun
Oh, Melbourne weather :)
20mm in 20mins I think
we saw a few ambitious girls trying to cross the road. They were swept away. Luckily some people caught them.
UnforgiviN5005: That's because Sydney Rocks and Melbourne that day just had wet socks!
Disclaimer: Nobody Was Stabbed in the Making of this Melbourne Video
Started at aprox 2:45pm on Saturday (06/03/10).
This is unreal!!
Surprised nobody got their surfboard out...
corner of Little Bourke St and Elizabeth St
I am delighted with all reponses ^_^
I was in the right place at the right time
omg my mates record shop used to be in the alley to ur left "summerset place"
I was lucky my house didn't get hit by hail. My cousin's place got broken windows
im from newcastle, and i agree
I wouldn't be playing with that water. Flooding often brings up things from the sewage system.
somone shoulda jumped in and say, "im on a boat!"
i was expecting a car to go down the street
Whoa. That's insane. O_O
LOL this looks like some clip from an apocalypse movie. Except not as dramatic. This is pretty extreme. o Ao;
I wouldn't want to be out in the street
0:31 yep thats definatly water
@paddlepopkid melboure still is best known for its music tho
someone did surf in they own garden. i saw it on the news XD
are you serious...?? the fact that i LIVE in Melbourne and i was in the Melbourne CBD when this was happening suggests that this in not fake...!!
the privledges of the western suburbs haha
@azielzoeker19 I do not think so.
I'd love to just float down the road
LOOOL! Lucky asses in the eastern states, over here in perth its been like 40+ for almost a month now...

@bdstratton Just appreciate the footage... and apparently there wont be a "next time" for 100 years
wow 66000 views in 2 days?
almost ! just a couple of years away; and a few more flood !
and then you see a car going down the street backwards
