After becoming pretty frustrated with all the Twitch VOD playthroughs of this, where people give 90% of their attention to chat, talk through the cutscenes, and rush through the game, I'm so happy to have found this one. You really give the game the attention it deserves and I'm so here for it. Thank you!

1:29:46 The materia showing in your weapon was something that I always dreamed of seeing as a child. It seems like such a little thing, a small detail that I never thought would be explored, absent in all the FF7 media that came out over the years. Boy was I blown away that it was included in this game. It was like the devs heard a little boy's wish and granted it. Among many other things this wonderful game does, it's still this small detail that gets me.

Finally! It's weird since I hardly watch any let's plays nowadays but I've honestly watched through a ton of your stuff so far (Hollow Knight, Outer Wilds, Subnautica, and most recently Undertale and Cuphead) . You just have a certain energy of fun and wholesome yet really skilful and knowledgable when it comes to the games you play + how you pay attention and appreciate the little things is a joy to see. I'm really excited to see you play this game, it's one of my favorites and I think you'll love it as well. The characters, the gameplay and the music are some of the best in any game ever.

OMG I LOVE THAT YOU'RE PLAYING THIS, YOU'RE ON A WAVE OF GOOD GAMES RIGHT NOW, now, just a small tip because it's a common misconception, evading doesn't give you invulnerable frames, if the animation hits you in any way it will give you damage, it's better to defend to reduce damage and build ATB

  • @Wrigglevision

Don't rely on rolling, there are no I-frames. The dance in this game comes from blocking and switching characters for different situations and using ATB charges effectively.

When this popped up in my recommended section i was stunned by excitement. This is one of my favourite games, and it fits you very well, so i am very excited. Great jacket, Princess Mononoke is my favourite film. The music is super importaint for the game design of this game, surely you understand why and how but this one of those games in which the music is as importaint as visuals. So seeing poor graphics doesn't even get picked up by my brain because of the greatness of this game, its phenomenal, just as an example. The music is, and has been, Classical and Heavy Metal inspired and can actually be found very similarly in songs of these two genres. I listen to the music on spotify and its a great example for how majestic this game is that its experience is equivalent to the best Heavy Metal songs.

1:30:40 yes, each mainline FF game is a self contained story with it's own lore, but there have been some sequels to some final fantasy entries, but they've been treated more like spin-offs for the most part. In the case of FFVII Remake, they are remaking the game not only through a gameplay and visuals, but also some story beats. The original game was so huge at the time that the physical edition released with 3 disks. You can say that the remake is treating each disk as an individual game, but it will tell eventually the whole story in a trilogy

Good luck on your playthrough, looking forward for the next video :)

Ive finally decided to start playing through this as well, it's been sitting on my account forever.
As someone who played the original when it came out, it's still incredible to see this in action - with the real time graphics light years ahead of the pre-rendered cutscenes of the day.
Sometimes it's really wild being an OG, and seeing how far games have come.
It's also wild how embedded in my psyche the music is.

I was thinking of playing this again before Rebirth comes out, but I think I might just watch your play-through instead. Lately you've played a few games that I just haven't been all that interested in, so I haven't been around. But, man, I've missed your Let's Plays! Your constant rambling is so lovely and relaxing, and when you get excited about stuff, like the lighting and characters, etc., I feel it right along with you! Thank you, Amber!
I watched a play-through of this game by @StrangeRebelGaming, aka, Briana White, the Voice Actress of Aerith, (the flower girl), and it was so fun to see her react to her own character and the game in it's whole! She truly is as lovely as her character in this game! If you get time later, I recommend watching her play it!

Very happy to see you start this one. I'm always impressed by your attention to detail - you're picking up on a lot of subtext that's extremely easy to miss if you don't already know the story, like Tifa being confused by Cloud's reply.
Re: Cross-Slash, the reason it says it makes an "ominous symbol" is that it literally spells out the kanji for bad luck/misfortune, and its Japanese name translates to something like "misfortune slash." In the original game it paralyzed the enemy in addition to doing damage, hence the name.

1:30:31 Yes, mainline "numbered" FF games are all separate. And yes, a couple of them have proper sequels. FF7 original was a 3 disc game back in 1997, and according to Square Enix, this Remake project was so large that they decided to split it into multiple games. Only about a year and a half ago announcing that the project will be 3 games, as 2 games was the other option.

The combat can take a bit of getting used to, but once you have the hang of it and are firing on all cylinders switching between characters and popping off abilities, it's genuinely one of the best systems there is. FFXIII (13) had two sequels, and they weren't just 'parts' to an existing game/remake: FFXIII-2 and Lightning Returns (aka 'FFXIII-3').
FFVII (7) has also had several stories taking place before or after it, in the 2000s, called the Compilation of FFVII. A prequel mobile game, prequel PSP (recently remade) game, a sequel movie, a sequel PS2 game. Now we're into 'Remake' trilogy.
Besides that there's a couple shorter examples. FFX (10) has a sequel FFX-2. FFIV (4) had 2 expansion/sequels kind of. FFXII (12) is in an existing setting from 1990's Final Fantasy Tactics, and it has a handheld small sequel. FFXI (11) and XIV (14) are MMORPGs with several expansions.

If you’re worried about missing things, rest easy: there’s a “Chapter Select” feature you’ll get after the credits that’ll allow you to hop back around through the game, get things you missed, and even play on Hard Mode. I know there’s a couple bits around the middle of the game that rely a lot on your choices, which really encourages using the chapter select to see how things might go a little differently there…

This game is sooo good, so many highlights to look forward to. The music is especially great from start to finish.
So I know you're way further now and have about a billion tips already, but I'll throw some out there anyway.
You will want to get used to guarding and tanking damage. It's counterintuitive after playing dark souls but rolling really won't be as helpful here, though it does have its uses.
Enemies will mostly target your active character. You can use that to get some heat off of whoever needs a heal.
Your inactive characters will only basic attack, guard and dodge. No ATB moves, no triangle moves. They're pretty good at it too, but their ATB charges VERY slowly.
Your active character gains ATB pretty fast, so constantly switch to whoever needs it most while issuing commands to the other two.
    Basically ATB ATB ATB.
Most importantly, enjoy the game! 😊

  • @Kineticboy2K1

All the mainline releases are different universes (FF 1 through 16 are 16 different worlds) but there have been a couple of repeats through side games and sequels.
FF6 had "The After Years" an episodic sequel.
FF7 had a compilation consisting of a movie "Advent Children", "Dirge of Cerberus" (a shooter) and "Crisis Core" (a PSP prequel)
    FF10 had "X-2" (Ten Two)
FF Tactics shared a world with one of the FF MMOs (FF14 I believe?)
    FF12 had "Revenant Wings"
FF13 had two sequels "XIII-2" and "Lightning Returns"
Additionally, FF9 was an homage to the pre-FF7 games, having many visual similarities, and though still separate worlds, FF1 through 3 were pretty much graphically identical. Also, Chocobos and often moogles (or Mogs) are present among all the games.
Fun fact: The numbering for FF was tumultuous through localization. 1-3 were considered too similar for Western audiences, so they only released the first one here on the NES. What was FF2 for us was Japan's FF4, and our FF3 was their FF6. Suffice to say, when FF7 came out, many English speakers were like "Huh? What happened to 4-6??"
Even more fun fact: The original Final Fantasy was named so because it was Squaresoft's (the company that eventually merged with Enix, making SquareEnix) last ditch effort to not go bankrupt. I think it succeeded.

You say you're a slow learner, but you're already better at using the defensive stance and parry than I ever was! A quick tip, make good use of the Assess materia when you get it. You will be able to instantly get an overview of already "assessed" (an ability the materia comes with) enemies by pressing the left bumper button. I didn't know that until after I finished the game, and it's so damn useful.

In regards to your question about how different FF games are connected to each other: typically, games with different numbers are not connected to each other, but games with the same number are. Final Fantasy 6 has nothing to do with Final Fantasy 7 for example, other than some general series-wide concepts and mechanics. Different numbered games are different stories in different worlds. However, same numbered games are directly related to each. FF10 has a sequel called FF10-2, and FF13 had two sequels. In this case, there are multiple Final Fantasy 7 games: in addition to the original game from 1997 you've played some of, there is "Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII" from 2006, which is a sequel to FF7, and "Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII" from 2007, which is a prequel to FF7. There is also at least one movie, and probably other media around it too. As long as the number is the same, it is set in the same world and typically features at least some of the same characters.

things the game tells you that you WILL forget early on
    defending charges ATB.
Cloud punisher mode defending is a counterattack
Cloud punisher mode cancels with a dodge
    Barret overcharge charges ATB
Holding the attack button produces a different attack than mashing for some character. For cloud it works in both punisher and operator mode and they work different from one another.
    Red ! means dodge

This remake is one part of three and from what I understand it is NOT a sequel to the OG as many might have you believe it’s more like a complete version-that doesn’t alienate certain elements that appeared in spin off games, things that integrate into the story were meant to be told more fluidly. It will be in this.
That’s how I’m beginning to understand it, most of everything that happens is exactly like in the original. I’m pretty sure, except there are some new elements that changed things. I guess to help tell the story in an objectively better way

Tips to help you enjoy battles more:
1: Cloud is almost unkillable if you get used to his gameplay. Get close, switch to punisher mash square, dodge to cancel punisher mode & repeat. Cloud can parry any melee in game even on the final boss. Just hold R1 don't worry about timing, it's the easiest parry in the history of gaming lol. If you hold square while in punisher he will stab the ground & activate a "berserk buff" for more damage, then go back to mashing square to enjoy extra damage. Always reach the final hit in combos, they do the most damage with Cloud.
2: All humans are weak to fire. All machines are weak to lightning. Monsters vary between ice, fire, wind.
3: Blocking fills your atb gauge
4: Close combat characters, mash square with them. Long range characters, hold square.
5: Use shortcuts( L1 + Square....etc). You can reassign these. This makes the game seemless no more press x to use abilities.
    Most importantly enjoy the game!

I think they did a really great job with this remake! It's fun to watch you play through it for the first time.
    Couple tips about combat:
    1. You'll want to get used to issuing commands to your teammates on a regular basis. Any time spent without them doing their specials is kinda just leaving damage on the table.
    2. Dodging is often less effective than simply blocking attacks. FF7R does not give any i-frames while dodging, a-la DS2, so you really only want to dodge when trying to evade a big area attack (like the Scorpion's EMP). I noticed you trying to dodge the Scorpion's missiles and eating a lot of damage from them.
Hope that helps, looking forward to the next vid!
    Have a great day!

Great playthrough. Enjoyed seeing certain moments taking you back. Tip, do all the side quests to get all the missable items. Side quests will also fill in lots of backstory details, even if the info doesn't seem relevant at the moment, it will come up later, the details matter. Also, there are some hidden items, so look everywhere. Ciao

My introduction to ff7 and ff8 was the same! My older brother who was 7 years older than me had them on his ps1 and i remember them fondly as it was really the only time we hung out/got along. He would let me watch him play. I didn't get to play myself until I was a bit older but those two games were always special to me. I've now almost platinum remake (just getting one last trophy) in time for Rebirth later this month. I'll be looking forward to seeing how you like Remake :]

OMG best gift ever! gonna love seeing you play this and hopefully love it just as much as i do! one of my favorite games ever shared with Zelda since growing up 😇
To answer if the games are connected or not, they are all self-contained, atleast within the numbers. So an example, 13 has 3 games called 13, 13-2 and last one is just called Lightning Returns i think, those share the same story, characters, world etc, then you have 7 which is its own thing and has nothing to do with 13s story and stuff. (i know this was a bad title to pick if you wanna get nitty gritty but hey xd)
I love that you pick up all the little things and actually learn and look around, most people miss the bomb explosion and just think its actually Avalanche!
    Much love!

    Spoiler-free thoughts:
If you were remembering the summons from another game, I'd guess Final Fantasy VIII. There were also summons in IX, but they were more restricted - only a couple of characters could use them, and one of them didn't turn up until much, much later...
Materia are colour-coded to an extent. The green ones (Cure, Fire, Lightning) give access to traditional spells that then cost ATB and MP to cast. Purple ones (Deadly Dodge, HP Up) have passive/triggered effects that don't require ATB nor MP to take effect. Other colours offer different types of effect, but I said "spoiler-free"...
When the trooper said "I know that..." he could have been talking about Cloud, but my guess would be that he was talking about the Buster Sword, Cloud's iconic weapon, which is even more distinctive than his spiky hairdo.
For the most part, each Final Fantasy game is entirely stand-alone, though there are recurring elements, both mechanically and in terms of elements of the setting. For example, Moogles and Chocobos turn up in most of the games. There's also usually a character named Cid for some reason. There are also occasional hints at a given game possibly being more connected with other games. For example, the Final Fantasy Tactics games are set in Ivalice, which is also the setting for Final Fantasy XII. Other connections are hidden as easter eggs, so I won't go into them here. And then there are a few direct sequels. Final Fantasy X-2 is, as you might guess from the name, the direct sequel to Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings is a direct sequel to Final Fantasy XII. Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII are direct sequels to Final Fantasy XIII. There are also a whole bunch of games and other media associated with Final Fantasy VII, with the movie Advent Children being a direct sequel, the game Dirge of Cerberus being a spin-off set after the events of VII, and several games being prequels, or at least set before FFVII proper.
And then there are the Dissidia titles, where the plot involves characters from different Final Fantasy games being plucked from their native settings. Final Fantasy XIV isn't directly linked to any other Final Fantasy games, but various expansions and parts of the world are set in places that aren't exactly what was in other games, but are strongly reminiscent, particularly if you don't pay too much attention to the precise details - things don't line up perfectly, but they get pretty close. And then there's the Kingdom Hearts series, where a number of characters share names, appearances, and general character traits with characters from several Final Fantasy games, though their histories are changed in order to fit into the KH lore...
So, yeah, Final Fantasy games are mostly independent, but things get a bit fuzzy in places, and there are some clear exceptions.

Amber, you gem! Checked YT and saw this video just before midnight -> forget about sleeping 😂. And, of course, it was a time well spent - as always with your videos. You did really great, especially considering how different (and not at all easy) this game is from the other games you are used to play. With all the excitement and stress I think you lost may be only three treasure chests, and not the most important ones at that - I am sure you noticed them later while editing. One tip: please, do not hurry, play as you usually do - methodically checking every corner and checking every NPC. There are lots of hidden things and also some side-lore from conversations you hear around you. You rushed a bit through the sector 8, but that was OK with all the things happening around, and you being still unaccustomed to the environment, but in future - just play as you usually do, taking your time to stop and look around as much as you want. This is one of the games where all the little details (and there are many of them including characters' body language) add to the whole story, and - being thorough is also the hallmark and quality sign of your play-throughs. Moreover it might be interesting also from your game dev's point of view, and I (and not only me) would like to hear more of that professional opinion too. Cheers!

The best early game thing to do, is to practice switching between characters frequently. You will get the most out of charging up multiple atb at once, then cycling through abilities.

Hey Amber! Great video as always! To answer your question about the games being connected. No they are all self-contained. However, the scope of this FF7 remake is so large that they made the decision to split the story into three parts. So this game that you're playing is only a portion of the original game that was greatly expanded to be its own game if that makes sense.

You are in for a ride! And don't worry about stopping to admire the art it is the reason why we watch you (at least I do) Also if this is the intergrade version you will probably have some DLC accesories and summons! You will have to claim them first in the menu. Whether you decide to use them or not is up to you of course!
