Should I have stayed away from this Rare Bird?

- I dont usually go in search of one-off rare birds, but when a Hoopoe turned up less than 20 miles from home, I had to make a decision. I dont see the point in chasing a tired bird around if its stressed and exhausted from a long flight, but from photos I could see that this one looked healthy, it seemed to be very comfortable with people standing nearby and was feeding very well. So I popped over to see it, and here is the footage I managed to get.
Do you think I did the right thing?

Hi Liam another Awsome film. Where could I buy "A Shot of Wildlife" Merchandise im a big fan 😊😊
Hi there, thanks for the great camera work ;-) may I ask what bit of the country you saw this in please? I’m just curious as to how far it made it into England? Many thanks
I saw many of them in my garden as a child living in South Africa, and I still find their calls incredibly nostalgic.
I live in Cyprus and am rural and these beautiful birds and beautiful bee eater birds are around my land, absolutely beautiful birds.
thanks for filming such a rare and beautiful bird .
What a beautiful sight thank you for sharing
Thanks for sharing 👍🏻 A friend of my father had a breeding pair in his rural Dorset work yard in the 90s, he was asked not to tell people, we only heard about it the following year. It's often reported they don't breed here, they do, but it's very rare - I've only seen them abroad, they're surprisingly well camouflaged when on the ground and it's often only their calls you hear.
I've heard they bred on occasion, but I've also have not heard of any recent cases.
How beautiful, I hope it finds it's way back ❤
What a beautiful bird. Thank you Liam for sharing.
Thank you for sharing Liam.
I was enchanted when I first saw a lone hoopoe in France many moons ago - you're right in that they really don't seem to be particularly bothered by us humans watching them - they just get on with what they're doing. Such fun to know it's in Norfolk - hope it finds it way onwards safely. Thank you so much for sharing!
Beyond brilliant ,and that's the channel as well .👍
Oh I would love to see this exotic looking bird, how beautiful. It seems to be having a good feed, hope it stays safe and finds its way before it gets too cold. Thanks Liam, what a treat to see! 🦅
Gorgeous bird
Just lovely! Thank you ❤
Lovely birb🥰
Wow! A rare sight indeed. Thank you Liam for sharing. 👍
Beautiful..... Thanks Liam.
I saw one of these when I went in holiday to Italy this summer. Gorgeous bird
Beautiful bird. Thank-you! Not seen in America.
They have found themselves in Alaska on a couple of a occasions but not for 50 years.
Very common in South Africa. A definite favourite ❤️
Thanks for sharing Liam. Appreciated
Thanks Liam! Wow, that must have been an amazing experience, like you I thought they were bigger so thanks for the info! Keep up the good work, all the best.
I have seen these birds 2 weeks ago, in Morecambe, in the meadow behind my house. I thought it was a young magpie until it turned to show its tan underbelly and reveal it's mohawk. There was more than one (maybe 10). Not all had the tan belly or crest. I saw an Osprey too in the same meadow last year.
The meadow behind my bungalow is one of the last flood plains left that hasn't been built on, so every high tide brings the birds to my doorstep, about 1/4 of a mile away from the bay.
I currently am in awe of a Kestrel/Sparrow Hawk (I can't be certain) that is back from last year, nesting in Levens Woods (end of the meadow) and hunting the meadow. All I know is all the other birds get together to attack it. Then again they do that with the Herons too.
Glad theres some good things about living in morecombe......
I’ve never seen more than 2 hoopoes reported in 1 group in the uk, however I don’t doubt you saw one
@@JvdahMC I didn't have my binoculars handy so I could be mistaken
@@stephansmith8111 I can’t think of what else it could be by your description, but that many hoopoes is highly unlikely, ofc not impossible
I didn't know they are as small as you said, either! Have never seen one but they do turn up at Portland, sometimes, which is only a twenty minute drive from where I live. One day I shall get to see one. Thank you to the home owner for allowing people to stare into their front garden and thus allowing you to share this lovely footage and facts with us, your viewers!
I stayed for a couple of weeks at a beautiful old mill in Mattishall last month and this footage reminds me of a green woodpecker we saw and filmed on several occasions in the paddock next to the mill eating ants…
A lovelly looking bird & great filming. Hope it does well.
WOW !! Thank you Liam !!!
One of my favourites here in Croatia where they are fairly common but still beloved. Whenever they come to our garden we drop everything to observe them.
Thank you!
Thanks. ✌🏻👊🏼
Love the reg number in the background: RB11 OWL - hoot hoot :)
My favourite bird I see them in fuerteventura when I visit every yr😊
Nice, I’m going to fuerteventura soon. What part of the island did you see them at?
@@jbmurphy4 hi see them regular in corralejo which is the main resort in fuerteventura I saw 1 last year eating ants in the roadside curb only 100 yds from 1 of the many superb beaches and main high road I'm there again November 15th also lots of spoon bills egrets turnstones 👍
I live in the Pyrenees and see these beauties from time to time but it's always a delight. Thanks
Oh yes I've seen and heard them in the Pyrenees and they are pretty indifferent to people walking by.
Several years ago in spring in Suffolk I was woken up by loud cooing. "That bloody collared dove is imitating a hoopoe now!" I thought, turned over and went back to sleep. Later I found it actually WAS a hoopoe.
My friend fantastic and beautiful thank 👍🏼 👍🏼 🆗️👋🤗
One of my real joys was having a hoopoe nest under one of our ancient olive trees when I lived in Spain. They're lovely birds. Their call so distinctive.
Living in south east Cornwall in 1969 as a teenager I saw this beautiful bird near our home always remember and never repeated a glorious bird 👏👏👏ps as children we collect birds eggs so built up a knowledge of all uk birds what was outstanding was it’s beak never forgotten
They are fabulous birds! So much character. We are very lucky to have them nest in our garden here in Provence. Absolutely our favorite visitor! 😊
Great footage of this beautiful rare visitor!
We've seen a Hoopoe in RSPB carlton marshes! incredibly beautiful and amazing birds, i think you did the right thing, what a lovely find!
Beautiful bird. I'm glad you thought about the needs of the bird when choosing whether to go and see it.
One of these visited our garden for several years around the 90's - 2000s. My mother and I loved watching it hunting for worms on our lawn.
Fantastic! Cheers!
Wow! What buzz to see such a beautiful bird.
What a beautiful bird! Made your day I bet. Hope the people don’t frighten him off. Take care Liam.
Thanks I really enjoyed it
Amazing. Great find Liam. We much appreciate your commitment to education by sharing this footage.
Totally understand. Whilst you don't have to worry about me ( I live in PA in the states) rare birds do create a few stampedes when they show up! Haaaa haaaa! We've had a few the last two years here in the Eastern/ Northern states with Flamingos and a Eurasian Teal and a misplaced Sea Eagle up in Maine. Those Hoopoes are a very unique bird. I've enjoyed seeing them on wildlife programs. All my best to you and your family! Fatherhood hasn't slowed you down! ❤ Remember, as a wildlife show host here likes to say, "" Don't be overconfident with birds""-"" They have wings""-"" they can fly""!
Thanks Liam, what a stunning creature it's absolutely gorgeous. Nature is amazing, have a wonderful Week and PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.
What a beautiful bird. You're lucky to see that!
wow wonderful thank you for this
i value that you recognized a moral dilemma and put forth your valid concern. i don't know this bird's subjective experience but as you noted, s/he appeared non-plussed. in general, i'm in favor of erring on the side of caution. thanks for your thoughtfulness and for sharing.
Thank you Liam. I really appreciate you taking the time to share this wonderful bird.
This brings back memories of the first Hoopoe that I saw feeding on leatherjackets on a lawn in a garden in Saxlingham Nethergate in south Norfolk many years ago.
Thanks Liam for showing the Hoopoe, what a beautiful bird. Hopefully will soon fly off to warmer climes. 😊 👍
We often see Hoopoe's in our garden in Tenerife.
Lucky you. My mum sent a photo of one on her holiday balcony in tennerife last year and I've wanted to see one ever since.
I've heard one in Cornwall this summer the sound is unforgettable, but I lived in N.Italy and they were a regular visitor to the garden/ land... lovely to see in the UK. Climate changes lack of food etc may all contribute to stray Hoopoes
Beautiful bird very common in Pakistan used to breed in our house garden.
One of those "hoopoe" came and stayed in my garden on the Isle of Wight. It hung about for about a week before flying off else where. Beautiful bird.
I've seen these in southern Portugal in the winter where they adapt to local opportunities like feeding at night around illuminated swimming pools. Beautiful bird, thanks for sharing.
Excellent footage. Really nice bird. I was lucky to see several on the canary island lanzarote but have never seen them here in the uk. Thanks for sharing
its good to see these rare moments caught on cam and they could come in handy for future reference on study, a really nice n rare find thank's
How unusual.
What a great find.
Thank you.
What a beautiful Hoopoe 🙂😲. Lovely informative video !!
Ngl tho, if a rare bird was to enter into my front garden, and then all of a sudden hoards of birdwatchers and wildlife photographers descended onto my patch, I would be closing all the curtains😂😲.
You are a gem of knowledge. I love your podcasts. Nature is wonderful. It reminds me of a dinosaur.
Great video Liam, thanks for sharing. I've only ever seen one in Italy and I was struck by how small they are as well, like you I was expecting something bigger. The call is more like oop-oop-oop than oop-oop, so they should really be call a hoopoopoe, but that would be silly.
fabulous, thanks 4 sharing
Wow, what a stroke of luck to be able to see it and get such great footage! My aunt has told me about these birds. Apparently one was spotted even further north in Lancashire this week!
What a beautiful bird for sure
I’ve seen them in Portugal. Would love to see one here. Thanks for sharing.
Stunning bird!
I've only been lucky enough to see this beautiful bird twice whilst on holiday in Menorca, in the garden of our rented villa. No idea if it was the same or different birds, but a rare privilege and only a fleeting glimpse.
Fantastic video Liam... some wonderful footage, such a wonderful little bird. i echo you, in hopes that it will find its way on the right path soon. must be amazing to find such a rarity in our gardens. the moral dilemma, definitely good to bring those thoughts and ideas to viewers attentions. and i would hope that the residents of the street were ok with the bird watchers overlooking.
I always wanted to see one.Thanks.
Wow, a fabulous post Liam 👍
Beautiful bird and the usual high quality blog thank you ❤
I've certainly not seen one of these in the flesh! Wether or not a situation such as this poses too much of a dilemma is, I suppose, entirely down to the individual circumstances, I reckon you got it right there, it looks like a happy hoopoe, if possibly one with a confused sense of direction!
Nice one Liam. 🌟👍
lovely footage. I think you were ok to do it because you know respect for the bird which was very content to be filmed. you are educating people how to behave so its all good.
Hi Mate a few year ago there was a Hoopoe that would come to the Grass verges out side my house In Birmingham It was there for about a fortnight before It disappeared I Did report It to the RSPB but never heard Back I do Have A not So good photo on my old Phone.
Brilliant video and explanation
Lucky you. Beautiful bird I have only seem them in books.
I would certainly want to see it if I had the chance....at a respectful distance so the bird wasn`t stressed . You clearly filmed it in exactly that way....thanks for sharing what seemed to be it`s totally natural and unbothered behavior!
I have seen a pair in the New Forest a few years ago, beautiful!
Many years ago I was travelling south in Scotland, I stopped in Moffat in the borders. I saw one feeding on a bowling green. It didn’t seemed bothered when and sat on a bench about 10 yards from it.
I remember seeing one in my garden in Hampshire in the mid-seventies.
I can still picture it in my minds eye !
Thank you for sharing this amazing bird. One has been seen in Swansea too, and I think my wife said something about one in Leicestershire too. Has to be weather related surely? Thank you for raising the ethical question too though. Given the issues you considered and the thought you put into it, I think you were OK. There is also of course the issue of resident's permission! I know this turned out to be an issue on a Waxwing twitch in Essex last winter. Keep up the good work mate. Stunning footage of the bird by the way! 🤓
Thanks!
brilliant to see one in natral setting - smaller than I thought too
Another great video.
They are fairly common here in Asia. This summer I saw for the first time a hoopoe feeding two fledglings. The fledglings perched on a branch and the parent foraged on the ground and fly up to feed them. It flew tirelessly up and down again and again. The young made hiss sounds begging. I've never heard their hoopoo call though. :)
Thanks for that, I'd read that they sometimes visit the south west/ Cornwall but I've never seen any in England myself but have seen two in Spain. Take care and all the best. Stevie
What a special moment and privilege you must have felt to see this. Truly a spectacular bird in both looks and navigational skills. Can you reveal where you were exactly? I'm guessing Costessy or Sprowston.
I saw several in Hua Hin Thailand last year and another in France in July this year, beautiful birds
I saw one in south devon one year . Lovely bird and very unbothered about people
Thanks
I thought the moral dilemma would be 20 cameras pointed at someone’s garden !
I have seen the odd Hoopoo in the UK. I now work long time in China and they are very common here. beautiful birds.
My experience of them in the Santa Barbara Castle, Alicante, is that they are very friendly bird and not bothered if you are near them. Watching them from our apartment, I have had two of them and two Hobbies in the same view on the telescope.
i used to live in UAE and remember seeing it a lot of times there. Just yesterday i was thinking about these birds
Did you do the right thing? I think so, it's just made my day, along with the consideration you showed the bird.
i saw one in my parents garden in durham in the hot summer of '76/ Beutiful birds.
I've seen quite a few of these in my time, in Italy mostly.. they're beautiful birds..
