It's interesting to see an early era pen from a beloved brand of pens. I was surprised by the ink window. I thought that was a modern design idea. Why does Pelikan make the grip section so short? And they still do! I had to teach myself how to hold my Pelikan, to keep my fingertips off the nib. This makes me wonder; which of our modern day pens will someday be considered as perfect examples of the fountain pens of our time?

For the Pelikan this is really a good question and something I've always found strange: the M1000 has a long nib, then this could justify a shorter grip (for example this is the same for the KOP). But the M800 has a grip even shorter than the M1000 (!) whereas the nib has a length very close to a standard jowo #6. And even more strange: if I measure the total length of the M1000 vs M800 without cap and without the nibs, the total difference is ... the length difference of the grip 🙂. In other words without cap and nibs: the M800 is shorter than the M1000 because ... the grip is shorter ....
