While interesting watching you hand clean that hub, you could have used a bowl and some mineral spirits and after disassembling it, clean each section in the MS bath for an easier clean up. Also, you need to remove the bearings, and if you are not going to replace them, at least remove the side covers and thoroughly clean them and regrease them again. Easy to do and well worth the extra effort. Thumbs Up!
Oh, wow. I had a wheel built in 97 with one of those hubs (anodized red). I ran it on my Giant ATX 970. It’s been so long, I don't even remember what I did with that old hub. I do remember my friends saying that they could hear me from a mile away, the pawls were so loud. I remember that it sat in the display counter at my LBS for ages, and every time I went in I'd ask to see it, then play with it as I hung out. I eventually bought it and had the wheel built. The rim was a Sun-Ringle Rhyno-Lite. Ahhh, memories.
That was such a hot hub back in the day, I chose the Hugi hub over that one though, loud as hell, but the engagement as instant. Knew one guy who rode that hub, big boy at 280lbs, hub was solid. My OCD is screaming at the fact that you didn't change the bearings, the O ring, and clean up the stress risers on the cassette indexing..
A straw brush comes in handy for inside surfaces. Some bar keepers friend is great for cleaning surfaces as well. Nice buff out that you did for sure !
I remember drooling over this hub - obviously I could never afford one. Now that I probably could I doubt I could even find one lol. If I do though I might have to do a restoration.
They work by cavatating the fluid, aluminium boat propellers dissolve with cavatation. Ultrasonic cleaners are great for lazy people but put some aluminium foil in one to see the damage they are doing
Hi there, this is another fantastic video thank you. I absolutely love all your videos with the level of detail you put in to everything. Just one question and I’m sorry if it’s a bit silly, are there any issues with (I’m assuming the hub is aluminium) corrosion when polishing to such a high standard? I’ve read online that by polishing you take away the protection? However, beautifully polished components like this look stunning on a bike!
Nice. I have one of these on a rim..seems a little loose, (has play..@ the cassette) the Small Allen bolt (?) you took out at axle side, I didn't see them go back in. And you turned the shaft a few times...to reach a disengagement area to Remove it? I'll have to take another look and put my hands on mine.. Good timing on the Video it's been on my mind.
I just happened to have a shiny new CLD rear hub sitting on the counter next to me as I watched this. Coincidence? I think not. I hope I’m rebuilding it 30 years from now!
Great video. The music reminded me of the original Kona Explosif build (the video that made me discover your channel). Would a bearing puller/installer and a ultrasonic cleaner be on your Christmas list this year? I've always wondered if purchasing one would make a difference to cleaning components up to level you did with this hub (pre-scouring and sanding)? Hopefully you find a matching front hub soon and I'm sure it will be some build 🙂. P.s. black d/b spokes with silver nipples and highly polished Mavic alloy rims would look sweet....
I doubt the magnetizing effect would be significant in this case. Besides, bicycle hubs are mostly destroyed by dirt making its way from outside, not metal shavings. Regular overhaul would likely be more important for its longevity than other factors such as magnetizing.
it's amazing how metal responds to love
Restoring old components is a medicine, it's something I love so much. Thanks for the video.

There are a lot of hubs out in the bicycle world , but when it comes to quality hubs those White Industries are just amazing !
These iconic parts from the past, we love them. And after your wellness it will work for the next 30 years. Great job saving historical technic✌
That hub was on my first set of custom wheels. Sounded like a fly fishing reel. Thanks for the memories!

Awesome. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an anodized (colored) one.
Those hubs are one of the most iconic parts of the 90's. Love and patience to restore it and back to service! Lovely video! Big hug!
Thanks my friend

They were some of the best back in the day. The fact it’s still holding up is a testament to the quality.

I have been holding one of these for a while awesome now feel empowered to overhaul it.
Awesome. Do it
I remember drooling over this hub - obviously I could never afford one. Now that I probably could I doubt I could even find one lol. If I do though I might have to do a restoration.
Very theraputic video.
I can't wait to see you build it for a wheelset on a future bike!
I always loved White Industries hubs and cranksets. In my opinion, they were the Industry 9 of the 90's.
somebody loved that hub. Home boy was mashing to ding up a TI driver like that. I am disappointed I didn't get to see how banged up the bearings were.
Love it! This brought peace to my soul. Thank you!
Awesome. That was the goal.
This is the original OldShovel!😊👍✨
Thanks 🙏
I was like: pop the shields off the bearings!! and patiently waiting 😀 but heeee didnt!!! 😀
I agree, I should have. The nice thing is I still can… I was also considering just replacing them also.
great video, if you havent already i wold suggest looking into a ultra sonic cleaner. I think it would serve you very well for future projects
I’ve thought about it

As always with love and dedication to detail. Always fun to watch. Greetings from Germany sends Ingo.🚴🚴♂🚴♀
Thanks my friend
have you had any experiance with rockshox judy works with the white brothers judd internals?
thanks to you I know how to repair, restore, and build a bike hub.. ciao.
Awesome
Looks great, any chance you could do a front one?
You went to all the work to the hub, I didn’t see you remove bearing dust cover & pack the bearing with new gears?
Man! That thing turned out beautiful!!! Almost to nice to put on a bike to actually ride!
Lol perhaps

Great restoration 👍👍
From used to as new .👍🏼 i use t9 put a tiny drop of silicone sealer into the screw hole .
Una belleza! excelente tabajo. Saludos desde Argentina!
What tool are you using to polish?

White Industries has a pdf of the hub manual available on their site. It should help.
Awesome

Cool hub. Maybe you should have changed or atleast re-greased those bearings tought
Exactly my thought 😂. To me that would be priority number 1. Function over looks
Great video
Thanks
I remember that company correct if I’m wrong they made cranks as well
Yep, and still do both as well as a few other bits.
Watching from Malaysia ❤
Awesome
Why didn't you pull the seals on the bearing in grease them
Ma quanto ne sai 🤙🤙🤙...anche questa volta hai fatto un super lavoro
How much would a set of wheels with these hubs be worth? I just sold a 97 Gary Fisher Joshua ZO with these hubs. Thinking I sold two cheap 😮
Who was first with such hub technology, American classic or White industries?

I’ve almost purchased an ultrasonic cleaner a few times…
Other 20 years to Go for this part
I would have replaced the bearings while I had the hub taken apart.
Wowwwwwwww
Once I owned a preowned White Industries freewheel. I regret selling it.
Gonna buy a brand new one some day.
That hub is shiny now, but you didn't touch the bearings. Even though they are sealed bearings, they are old and crusty.. I promise you.
Basically a Through Axle hub before that even was a thing
In the end you turned the axle and the freehub turned with it. Thats not how it supposed to work isn’t it?
It is on bearings but when not holding the freehub still it did rotate.
вот это втулка !
More than mildly annoyed that this has better construction than my current Deore hub.
I’ve never heard White Industries products owners to complain regarding bearings’ quality.

Hi
Howdy
The click on that hub man 👍
Нельзя во втулки лезть с магнитом, детали намагничиваются и продукты износа липнут на детали вместо того, чтоб оставаться в смазке.

So satisfying, I need a cigarette…
