Loved this video, but, "A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY" DOES NOT APPLY TO SUNSCREEN! Sunscreens are tested at 2 mg/cm^2!!!! Moreover, applying half the amount of sunscreen renders you at less than half the SPF amount (so applying 1/2 of the recommended amount of an SPF 30 leaves you much less than SPF 15) because the SPF graph is exponential, not linear! I'm so happy you are using sunscreen and consider it an important part of your morning routine, and I hope more people start to prioritize this as well. Please be informed, however, that the recommended amount of sunscreen for the face (not including neck/chest/etc.) is 1/4 of a teaspoon! This is a lot= more product than one might think, but it is truly necessary!
As some one who not only has age spots and malasma, I also have sun allergy, I break out in hives with sun exposure. I use sunscreen several times a day. The amount you're using isn't enough to do the amount of skin on your face, neck and chest. You need a lot more than you think you need. It isn't like other skin care, a moisturizer where you use enough to make a thin layer. I apply multiple layers of sunscreen because using it all at once makes it too hard to rub in. I use my chemical spf before my moisturizer and a physical spf after. I also use vitamin c and e, antioxidants to help fight free radicals and helps sunscreen work better. Sunscreen is drying so I use hydrating serums before spf. And I give my skin care time to dry before doing makeup. There are many sites that can tell you how much sunscreen you need to use to protect yourself. I do my neck and chest as part of my body with my spf for my body. It's way to expensive to use facial sunscreen, which is usually formulated to be easier to blend into skin, and more cosmetically elegant. After you let sunscreen rest on your skin to dry, it can still feel oily. I use a blotting paper to take away some of that shiny stickiness. One ply tissue works too. And because I've used multiple layers, I dont take the sun protection away.
danielle king you are absolutely right. I did a lot of research on SPF. You need about a table spoon worth to cover just your face. Also, you need to wait a minimum 30 min before applying make up after...
Some estiticians say to use sunscreen last. But alot ot dermatologists say to use chemical sunscreen first then moisturizer, or use moisturizer then a physical sunscreen. The reason behind this is that a chemical sunscreen needs to be close to the skin to absorb the uva/uvb light and convert it into heat energy. Physical sunscreen is mineral based and reflects light away from skin. It's also very occlusive, sitting on the skin, not absorbing into skin and acts as a barrier. If you put moisturizer on this, it won't absorb into skin, it will just sit on top of physical sunscreen and dilute it, making it harder to reflex the sun. I use a very light moisturizer that absorbs well into skin and allow it time to sink in, add a chemical sunscreen, let that sit, than add a layer of chemical sunscreen, let that dry before I do makeup. Because I add so much, due to my sun allergy, I have to use an oil at night to take it off and moisturize well. My skin is no longer oily, its dry. The sunscreens dryer me out
I'm so glad you're putting out content to promote sun protection! I do think that you're not using enough, the literature and most dermatologists will recommend at least 1/4 teaspoon for just your face. Although those studies were done with the average male face which is larger than women's, a tiny dollop is likely not providing enough protection. Anyway, looking forward to more skincare content from you!
Yes!! I have always read 1/4 teaspoon for just the face and neck, another for chest and an ounce for the body. It’s a lot and it’s hard to use that much.
Yes!! My dermatologist said the average person uses about 1/4 or less of what is used when it is when being tested. Therefore you always take the square root of the spf and that is the actual protection you typically get. 75 spf or higher is what you should aim for :)
There is no such thing as an SPF higher than 50. Everything that's being marketed as an SPF higher than 50 is fake and a marketing ploy (not sure if that's the right term, English isn't my first language!). I do however agree that most people do not use enough sunscreen!! SPF 30 would probably be enough for most people if they would just use enough and reapply whenever needed. Glad more youtubers have started to make videos about this!
Garn Walker spf 40 is plenty sufficient, even spf 30, there is no need to go above spf 50. I believe you only get 2% more protection from spf 50 than spf 30!
Such a great video! I love that you mentioned protecting your neck and décolletage, as well. I’m currently facing the painful consequences of not applying any sunscreen on my neck and shoulders.. my sunburn is so bad. Never making that mistake again.
the amount of product used in this video is very misleading unfortunately... that powder only contains two applications worth of adequate protection, using the site's own calculation. that's a TON of powder to try to pack on your face. don't waste your money. also, the mist needs to be sprayed until skin is "glistening" basically meaning fully saturated which was not shown in the video either. and the amount of sunscreen used for face neck and shoulders was not enough either. just get the amounts right if you want to be protected, that's all.
You’re really supposed to put enough sunscreen with your sunscreen lotion anyway. So I guess it’s helpful for those that just wanna touch up a little bit. But I use SPF 60+ on my skin and then this will be a nice way to touch up a little bit. Throughout the day.
The powder doesn’t give you nearly enough protection. You also need more than a thin layer under makeup for adequate protection. There’s really no way to wear makeup comfortably with adequate sunscreen on
Michaela A exactly!!! However, Asian sunscreens are a dreammm to wear under makeup!! with the adequate amount and protection!! they're the best. I get mine from Amazon or YesStyle :)

I just started wondering when i should put sunscreen in my makeup routine. When I get my next paycheck I am definitely going to be buying the products. They seem pricey, to me anyways, but it'll be totally worth it for my health. Thanks so much Melissa! You are amazing!!
Thank you for making sunscreen such a priority and mentioning it so often in all of your videos. As a licensed esthetician, I am constantly getting asked what's the secret to beautiful skin or the best product they can buy to prevent premature aging and I always say start with a sunscreen. Even if you have the best skincare regimen, if you are not using a sunscreen especially if you use actives, and you are not protecting yourself from the sun, you are wasting your money and will continue chasing damage over and over. Great video!!
OMG YES! Thank you for this video!! I feel like this is such an important thing to talk about and not enough people are talking about it here on YT! ☀️
I’m sorry, but the spf in moisturizer analogy is BS. It has gotten its SPF labelling through a test. But with ANY SPF-product, you need to apply enough. Which is not possible with makeup products, powder etc, but “moisturizer with SPF” should surely be possible. It’s just a description that the vehicle ... well, may be more moisturizing.
Hi! I wanted to buy a bb cream with sfp (50) to make reapplication easier If I use an equal quantity of it than the regular sunscreen will it be ok? (So like 1/4 teaspoon)
Lilith Hedwig yes it’s ok theoretically. But using 1/4 teaspoon amount of a tinted product (in your case BB cream) would make your base look very thick and cakey, and slides and moves very easily, not even to consider if it could be applied evenly on your skin.
absolutely LOVE this video! I'm 22 and suffer from post inflammatory erythema and it gets super worse when I'm in the sun. I wear my SPF but also makeup to cover the PIE and this is an amazing product to use when my bb cream gets oily and also when I'm sweating in the sun. Love you Melissa. Been watching you since forever
Super informative video! I also really loved the makeup look... I am now always telling every one to wear their sunscreen and sun glasses cause of you. Super important thanks Melissa 👍🏼🙂
Such an important video! Thank you! I have seen SuperGoop but never purchased it. I do wear moisturizer w/SPF in the house - sun shines in the windows! My sister had cataracts at age 50 due to her young years as a sunbather. She was a huge sunbather as a teen, and had several skin cancers removed over the years. She is dark haired, I am light haired, and have several bad burns in my youth. So far only 1 skin cancer removed, but you have to be diligent with screenings also! She had the cataract surgery and now actually has better vision. I hope you are able to slow down the progression in your eye until your surgery. Who knew the sun could affect our eyeballs?!! Glad your on the sunblock bandwagon! Thanks again!
I've been using Supergoop's oil sunscreen as part of my skincare routine for years. My mother stumbled on it and brought on vacation, I've ordered it annually ever since. It's one of my holy grail products. I also really like their hand cream. Thanks for all the great tips xo
Yasss, I love these skin care and suncare videos. I am very particular about my skin in the sun. So I love the fact that they have invented those two products you showed at the end because I never know how to reapply sunscreen when I need to throughout the day with makeup on! Thanks for showing us, love you Melissa!
Thank you for doing this video!! I worked at a tanning salon for two years and I’m already noticing how it damaged my skin. It’s now my top priority to protect it and these are the products I need in my life. 😍
girrrl I HOPE you apply way more than that in real life! especially with such high UV indexes now a days! you probably have spf 2 from what you applied and "reapplied". The base sunscreen amount needs to be at least 1/4 teaspoon AND for the reapplications as well!! the powder and spray (which are not reliable spf on their own at all, much less with that minuscule layer you applied, if any there was...) are icing on the cake, on TOP of your base spf, NOT for reapplication whatsoever!! with all due respect, this is quite misleading. you wanna know about real spf watch Dr. Dray!
I agree with everything you said!!! I hate how misleading the application and re-application are ! Especially when she’s being sponsored by a sunscreen brand
I think you need that amount of sunscreen if you are out in the sun, but if you don’t and you are out just for a little bit you need reapplication? No.
Exactly! Nothing works except a normal reapplication of a liquid or cream spf. I just stay out of the sun as much as i can on certain times, wear a big spf hat, big sunglasses and a lot of spf and only some blush, (spf) lips, mascara, maybe a highlight and brows. I have chronic skincancer so i know i can’t use powder or a mist to keep my skin safe, horror😫
Thank you so much for this. I’m 36 and just diagnosed with melanoma. I was like you, in the sun for hours, oil, loved tanning beds. I’m paying for it now. Love you and your videos! 🖤💕
Not to mention too When you wear sunglasses will help you not to squint while outside so bright and sunny, reduce wrinkle around your eyes, even me when i went to watery my garden i wear them
Thank you for being vocal about this. I've had 2 melanomas due to all of the sun exposure I got in high school. I'm definitely going to buy that supergoop powder - that's fantastic.
Thank you so much for sharing these products! I have lupus and sunlight is my enemy but I hate wearing sunscreen because they feel so heavy on my face along with makeup on top. Can’t wait to try these
yass girl!! THANK YOU SO MUCH I have always wandered how are you supposed to re-apply sunscreen with makeup on...and you have answered all my 🌞 exposer questions!!!😆🙌
Ive always heard to apply a nickel sized amount to face for sufficient protection (learned this back when...along with the fact that I wasn't using enough before either!) but you just used a lil dollop and said "a little goes a long way." I'm assuming it has chemical blockers not physical ones as it's clear but since you partnered with Supergoop!, I'd think they'd instruct you on how much to apply so did they say it's ok to apply less than the typical nickel-sized amount?
qveenissac yea, it’s not “a little goes a long way”. A dermatologist told me to always apply 1/4 tsp otherwise you are NOT getting the full spf of the product.
onyxfaith interesting...I've not heard the quarter tsp rec but seems like it'd be a lot less than a nickel sized amount. I always feel like I've got so much product on my face when I do the "nickel-sized" blob. Interesting post I just found (we may not need as much afterall...): www.reddit.com/r/AsianBeauty/comments/33lzvr/a_little_experiment_on_the_14_tsp_recommended/
Trust me guys, it was definitely a good amount of sunscreen and when I say a little goes a long way I think a nickel sized amount is considered a little versus a blob of sunscreen
Becka Mayfield no she did not. I always thought I was placing quite a bit of sunscreen and when I actually measured 1/4 tsp it was crazy more than I thought
Very nice video! I will check it out when I am in Vegas and go shopping to sephora. I come from germany, so normally it is not so easy for me to get these products. And for the upcoming poolpartys it is exactly what I need! Thank you !😘
I am just loving all your content lately. From your vlogs, tutorials, skincare series, I'm just loving the vids. I'm hoping you can include some fitness, meal prep, and fashion content too. You have a great sense of style!...or maybe I shouldn't ask for fashion content. I may buy what you recommend. Lol! I normally don't do this with other youtubers, but I just love what you use and recommend. My most recent purchases...the supergoop items and that gorgeous dior eyeshadow palette. Wow! What great items! :)
Thanks for the tips! I started using supergoop because you recommended it and I love it! I added these products to my loves and I will be purchasing them soon! 💕
Thought the exact same thing. What a stupid thing to say that, the SPF in moisturizer must be balanced against other ingredients thus not as potent. It's like she forgot about skin product testing standards and consumer law, lol
@@elleh6642 Forgot about it? She clearly knew nothing about sun protection at any point prior to this video, so there was nothing to forgot 😂 This entire video is doing more damage than good imo. She is grossly misinformed about the entire topic! What a joke!
True, they are labeled and tested, but SPF levels are only accurate assuming the consumer uses the full recommended amount. Most people, like Melissa here, use a fraction of that amount and thus get a fraction of the protection regardless of the SPF label.
THANK you for emphasizing sunglasses as well. Hats and squinting is not enough. I helped many people in Peru and Mexico receive eye survey since many are high in the mountains me never wear sunglasses, hats, sunscreen
Do you have any similar tips for touching up undereye concealer throughout the day? Once I set with powder, I’m unsure what to do, but my circles need a little extra coverage throughout the day. Thanks!
Thanks for this informative video. I'm from the Caribbean and I also have sun damage in both eyes from never wearing sunglasses. Always knew about sunscreens for face and body but honestly didn't know about the sun damage in the eyes. I would like to hear more about your upcoming surgery because I'm very nervous to have an eye surgery.
For those wondering how to best get mineral sunscreen to play well with makeup, Coola Daydream Mineral Primer SPF 30 is amazing. I also recommend Australian Gold Botanical Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50. Plus the Tatcha Silk Canvas Perfecting Primer will make any makeup look fantastic over pretty much any sunscreen. It looks terribly expensive ($52) but you only need a small amount so it'll last awhile. If it gets you to wear sunscreen faithfully every second you're even near a window - worth it! Plus, wear big hats (full brim!), cover your shoulders and stay out of the sun 10am-3pm. Do not forget your hands! I love the Supergoop hand cream and carry the travel size everywhere (reapplication is key - especially if you wash your hands as you should). Also, take a cue from Chinese women and use a plain old regular umbrella.
Thank you so much for sharing this! 'Ive been wondering about ways to reapply sunscreen over my face when I'm wearing make up for a long time now without having to take everything off to reapply.
Thank you so much for this video! I find myself relying only on the SPF in my makeup. This helps me out a lot. One question, I had, do you not apply primer before putting on makeup when using SPF?
Supergoop just landed at sephora in Italy and I bought their sunscreen, but I wanted the mist! I picked up the cream instead! I think I go back and buy that too!
I can definitely agree. When you’re young you don’t think about the consequences of not protecting your skin. I make it a point now to always protect my skin.
also can you please do a non-sponsored video where you show all the sunscreens you use? i know you’ve shown them on insta but i would like some more details on them!!
You mentioned in this video that you are getting a surgery in you eye. Did you get it done? Do you have any video about it?.. Love how easy and beautiful turned out your eye makeup
Yes!!! Thank you for this video! I’ve been wanting to incorporate sunscreen into my routine for a while but was unsure of what really works well with makeup
Thank you so much for this video! It was so informative and I can finally apply sunscreen the correct way. I have relied on foundation with SPF but I don't always like to wear makeup so finding a sunscreen that won't leave a white has always been a challenge. I will definitely be trying this out!
hi! what about primers like mineral veil or porefessional? where will it feature in the moisturiser, sunscreen, primer sequence? before sunscreen or after?
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼great video....your doing way more skin care/sunscreen than most people and most likely more than those telling you that you aren’t using enough lol i recently discovered super goop setting spray n love it some sun screen better than nothing!

Thank you for being vocal about this. I've had 2 melanomas due to all of the sun exposure I got in high school. I'm definitely going to buy that supergoop powder - that's fantastic.
Thanks for being honest about the consequences of sun exposure. And that eye shadow is gorgeous on you!
Just right on time. I just bought a sunscreen. Love you from philippines! 🇵🇭😘😍❤️
Nikkie yay! I want to visit Palawan soon!
Such a useful video 😍😍 And I'm so glad that some youtubers started to recommend skins care and sunscreen products 👏👏
Loved the video! I’ll definitely be looking into these products 🥰
You look absolutely stunning with your makeup!! Soft yet beautiful!!!!
One of the most helpful and important videos I ever watched!! Thanks for sharing ❤️
She definitely had more than 1/4 tsp
onyxfaith interesting...I've not heard the quarter tsp rec but seems like it'd be a lot less than a nickel sized amount.
Thank you !😘
So pretty
Omg ur skin is so glowing... Pls tell what u do?
Love from india 👍
Hooray for new video!! 🙌🙌
I'm patiently waiting for that skin/foundation series though 😉
Excellent info and video!
Been waiting for a supergoop video - so glad you made this!
Love Supergoop ! You look gorgeous Melissa !
You do know how much sunscreen is in a moisturizer because those claims are regulated and if it claims SPF 50 or whatever, it has to provide SPF 50.
Lauren W I thought the same! The spf in moisturizer analogy did not make sense...
Thought the exact same thing. What a stupid thing to say that, the SPF in moisturizer must be balanced against other ingredients thus not as potent. It's like she forgot about skin product testing standards and consumer law, lol
@@elleh6642 Forgot about it? She clearly knew nothing about sun protection at any point prior to this video, so there was nothing to forgot 😂
This entire video is doing more damage than good imo.
I never thought products like this existed! Thank you sooo much for making this video! Ahhh! Getting these super goob products ASAP 👏🏽
Great video! I love your waves! Can you do a hair video on how to get this look please? You’re such a beauty!
You look so so stunning in this look!!!!! 😍😍😍😍
You look so GOOD! Need to try that bronzerrrr
I didn't even realize they could put spf in setting powder!!! The setting spray one was a cool idea too.
Melissa ... Well done!!! Great content!!
Thanks!
Genius products!! I wonder if there's any flashback from the powder though?
OMG!! I’ve been wondering this for years!! Thanks so much for this video!!!
Great Video melissa! Thanks for all the tips!!
Does the sunscreen act as a primer? I want to start adding sunscreen to my makeup routine!
Great video, majorly helpful, definitely needed!
Yes, I want to be applying spf, but not sure how to with makeup. Thanks for this!
Thank you so much for your tips ❤️
probably the second time i see this video but i love it. sunscreen tips and the makeup! ♥
So helpful!!! Love your makeup, it's so simple yet so beautiful! Definitely buy the setting spray. Question does the powder help with oily skin?
Aside of how good the video is, the thumbnail was super cute!
Just found your channel and I LOVE it! Barely got into skincare and I'm 28 🤦🏻♀️ better late than never but you've been such a huge help! ❤️
Supergoop just landed at sephora in Italy and I bought their sunscreen, but I wanted the mist! I picked up the cream instead! I think I go back and buy that too!
I ALWAYS wondered about this topic. I needed this video so much. Thank you!
Yessss!!! Sun care video!!! 💕💕💕💕
I can definitely agree. When you’re young you don’t think about the consequences of not protecting your skin. I make it a point now to always protect my skin.
Excellent video
Love this!! I just wish the products came with higher spf. Still buying that powder though! 🙌🏽
also can you please do a non-sponsored video where you show all the sunscreens you use? i know you’ve shown them on insta but i would like some more details on them!!
You mentioned in this video that you are getting a surgery in you eye. Did you get it done? Do you have any video about it?.. Love how easy and beautiful turned out your eye makeup
Love it! Very informative! That’s true i never know how to protect my skin when I’ve already applied my makeup
Absolutely loved your tips and tricks and I will incorporate them into my next UA-cam video!!!
Yes!!! Thank you for this video! I’ve been wanting to incorporate sunscreen into my routine for a while but was unsure of what really works well with makeup
Hi Melissa! Thank you for this video! Would you apply foundation primer before or after the sunscreen?? Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! It was so informative and I can finally apply sunscreen the correct way. I have relied on foundation with SPF but I don't always like to wear makeup so finding a sunscreen that won't leave a white has always been a challenge. I will definitely be trying this out!
Amazing video!
Hi Melissa! Thank you so much for this video!❤️ I watch all of your videos!
Love your videos and adore you 😙😙😙... please dont ever change!
WOW your hair looks amazing!! Please make a tutorial ❤️❤️
what brushes do you use?? i really want to know which were the highlighter and all over powder brushes!!!
Loved your video! Yes sun protection is a must including for your eyes! Thank you! 🙏🏻
Very beautiful skin😍
YESSSSSSS I'm so excited you made this! Also I've never been so early to a video lol
hi! what about primers like mineral veil or porefessional? where will it feature in the moisturiser, sunscreen, primer sequence? before sunscreen or after?
Can you do a review on their products, preferably the setting spray ?
I’ve used the powder types before but I’ve never seen the makeup setting spray style before. Very cool
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼great video....your doing way more skin care/sunscreen than most people and most likely more than those telling you that you aren’t using enough lol i recently discovered super goop setting spray n love it some sun screen better than nothing!
I use the it cosmetics cc cream and it says to apply every 2 hours, but I feel like it would build up and look cakey, have you tried it Melissa?
Off subject, but I love the lip color you are wearing, what is the brand and color name of it? Thank u
