Whenever I learn myths, I try to imagine what earthly events are being explained. I wonder if this is an allusion to earthquakes or solar flares meteor showers or volcanic eruptions or solar eclipses. So many possibilities!

Here the chariot steered by pheaton, coming from 'where the sun is' highly probable is a major comet which after rounding the sun, passed close to our planet, and scourged by its very near miss (between Earth and Moon is the story), great parts of the Earth.
This happened in the same myth, several times in following its own circle from sun to Jupiter? and back again.
He probably past Jupiter very close by too, as lightning must have been seen from the Earth.., after whitch this comet became several parts heading to the sun and past the route of our planet again..some of which came down to the Earth.
Listen carefully and 'see' myth telling the devastating story! ( thats were myths are for..speaking about history)

Yes, it is, Plato says it himself in his book "Critias". He says "There have been, and will be again, many destructions of mankind arising out of many causes; the greatest have been brought about by the agencies of fire and water, and other lesser ones by innumerable other causes. There is a story that even you [Greeks] have preserved, that once upon a time, Phaethon, the son of Helios, having yoked the steeds in his father's chariot, because he was not able to drive them in the path of his father, burnt up all that was upon the earth, and was himself destroyed by a thunderbolt. Now this has the form of a myth, but really signifies a declination of the bodies moving in the heavens around the earth, and a great conflagration of things upon the earth, which recurs after long intervals." So Phaethon means there astral bodies that came down and caused fires and destroyed everything.
