Oh yes! And how about a chance to have a good power walk without any weather issues. I remember dodging a few determined power walkers when I attempted to enter a store!
So many great memories here!! I miss Kinney shoes so much - it's where I bought my first pair of "Earth Shoes", remember those? Also my first pair of western boots. I miss B Dalton's, Waldenbooks and Borders (not mentioned here) so much! I love the smell of a bookstore and I still have my Waldenbooks discount card 😢
I worked at B Dalton book seller, Roosevelt Field Mall (Long Island, New York) from 1994-1997. This store was the direct competitor of Waldenbooks. I can’t believe how long it has been since it closed.
There was at our Mall in Yuba City we had such stories as Walden books and we had forever 21 and Sears, they're not there anymore and I miss it. There was an Kinney's in our Mall too. I miss a lot of the stores that was in the mall.
Our mall was an outdoor mall with 4 anchor stores beginning with Sears, Marshall Fields, then later JC Penney and Carson Pirie Scott. Smaller stores in between connected everything. In the center was a big open area with a fountain, concrete chairs and benches, trees, bushes...all decorated to the hilt at Christmas time. In the 90s they decided to enclose everything making it an indoor mall. ....and other things happened. It's a shell of what it used to be. There was a Kresge's, Herman's Sporting Goods, Red Cross Shoes, Magic Pan restaurant, Kay Bee Toys, Woolworth, County Seat, Leathermakers, Krochs and Brentano's Books,
South Coast Plaza is still the largest mall on the West Coast. That place was my second home! I watched how it changed from 1969 to the early 2000s. I haven't been back in many years. ❤
Borders Books and Waldenbooks were once owned by Kmart when their management decided to invest in other retailers instead of in their own stores. The book market was also changing at the same time that Kmart owned these bookstores. Internet was growing, and many people went and purchased digital books downloaded on the internet.
Thanks for the mall memories. I worked at County Seat in the late 70's early 80's when I was in school. Fun job - It looked like the pictures you had in the video , when it was more of the wood enterance.
I remember going to the mall in the San Francisco Bay Area and all the stores. Sears, JC Penney, Mervyn's, Emporium, Capwell's, Macy's, Liberty House, Bullock's, Woolworth, S.H. Kress, and Grant's, were the anchor stores. Then the other stores: Hastings, County Seat, Deb shops, Sam Goody, Music land Music Plus, Roos-Atkins, Grodin's, Smith's, K B Toys, Orange Julius, Waldenbooks, B Dalton Booksellers, and other stores. In the San Francisco Bay area the malls are Sunvalley, County East, Southland, New Park, Stanford, Hillsdale, Stonestown, Tanforan, Serramonte, San Antonio Plaza, Eastridge, Coddintown, Solano Towne Center. Hilltop closed a few years ago. Valco Plaza in Cupertino as well.
This is a great video but, you forgot one store Miller’s Outpost. Anchor Blue took it over. I never went to all of these stores but it was nice to know they were there because it meant there was an abundance in selection.
Perfect first pick. I miss Waldenbooks so much. As much as I miss Suncoast as well, no sugarcoating their prices for DVDs were utterly mental. I did pay 43 bucks for a DVD with virtually no extras there once.
Walden’s, B Daltons, Harmony Hut. I remember going to Radio Shack to get a battery and buy some stuff for my radio. Food places like Mrs Fields Cookies and York Steak House. Memories!
The Suncoast store I went to was at the Lloyd Center mall in Portland, Oregon! That's where I found DVDs of the original Blue's Clues series! Those were great times for me!
I was in Musicland and Walden Books at least once week. Also B. Dalton Books and another book chain that I can remember the name of. in the 1990s Media Play became a one stop shop for all of that, and then they disappeared. And of course Radio Shack was a must when I need electronics. I remember going to The Sharper Image a few times, but I'm pretty sure I never ever bought anything there. It was way out of my price range.
@@kdepp90 Naw, not Borders. That was much later. This was back in the days when book stores sold books and record stores sold music, and that was all. And they didn't have cafes either. Though they were in the mall. So if you want that it was just a short walk away too. 😎
I don’t want to go to any mall today. The mall in my town (Cherryvale Mall) has become a violent place with people walking in with guns. I don’t need that! Most of the stores that would attract me are closed or moved out. 👎
If you were not a teen in the 80's, you don't know what a mall is. About the only thing remaining from MY mall is JC Penney. Most missed is the video game arcade. We thrived there. When I walk past that boarded up room, I can still imagine the PLAYLAND label scar above the sheets of T 1-11.
We still have our Spencer’s here in WV. I think of orange Julius all the time. Miss it and its orange filled counter display I remember from my early days.
Malls these days are not an experience but a task. I still have a Sharper Image clock that flips to show temp, flip to show timer, flip to show world time, flip for current date/time. The years end at 1999 but I still use it. Works great. I have a Units tank top from almost 30 years ago, that still looks as new as when it was bought in 1988.
It would be fun if you did a video about stores that used to have cringe-worthy names but changed them. The two most prominent that come to mind are Lane Bryant Chubby Shop (now just Lane Bryant) and Catherine’s Stout Shop (just Cathrine’s and only online now).
Waldenbooks was the go to place to get Mortal Kombat fatality codes from the magazine rack to use at Aladdin's Castle arcade a few steps away in the local mall here
Spencer Gifts is still very much around. I remember when it sold just normal things by a housewife who started at her home. They also own Spirit Halloween. I think it was funny that the police threw two store managers in jail in Bucks County PA for selling "drug paraphernalia."
Umm Spencer's is still in many malls and also have standalone stores as well so don't know why they are the list. I don't know if still there but up to like two or three years ago there was still one Sam Goody still in a mall in Minnesota, I think. Brookstone is also still in malls as well not as many but still in a good amount of them.
Spencer's is still around. They have about 600 stores. An average of 12 per state isn't actually the definition of "not around anymore." They pretty much sell the same stuff they always have. They also own the pop-up store Spirit Halloween, so they aren't doing too bad.
Your commentary is annoying and very often wrong. Along with your totally wrong pictures of ‘Merry-Go-Round’. It wasn’t the children’s shoe store. That store / picture is from the 1940’s. And everything didn’t fail because of ‘Big Box’, online sales or ‘fast fashion’. Many of those stores closed before ‘Big Box’, online sales or ‘fast fashion’ even existed. Too many other inaccuracies to mention.
Saw an. ad poster in one. Of shaper image store for Trump. Steaks . the poster ad is in one of the windows. Also remember The Trump game. That was sold in the 1980s .
At 2:22 you can see Trump Steaks advertised in Sharper Image's left front window. Not sure of the other store's reasons, but it explains why they went out of business. Every business he's involved with goes bankrupt. We're next....
Malls were cool, till growth happens, in my local case, they built new bigger high schools near by, all kids would flood masl after school, not buy anything, scare everyone off, n that was that, do I have a solution?..no.
Dallas and suburbs. Richardson Square mall is gone. Big Town should be gone, if it’s not. And Town East isn’t a mall I want to go back to. North Park was too costly. But then, I haven’t been to Dallas county since the early 2000s.
Radioshak, Waldenbooks, those were the good old years!
Yeah, visible decline after 2005
The Radio Shack in our town went under years ago.
@Alter_Onkel yes sir...80s and 90s..80s New Wave and Michael Crichton novels; films..

the naughty adult aisle,lol
14:09 OMG! My brother and I loved going to Suncoast, it's one of my favorite memories of him after he passed.😔
Yup Walden's and B. Daltons! All those Cliff Notes Books I bought there!!😂😂

I remembered all of those bookstores Walden books and D.B Dalton! Pick up your favorite books in your hands!

Oh yes! And how about a chance to have a good power walk without any weather issues. I remember dodging a few determined power walkers when I attempted to enter a store!

Scary innit? I shopped the one on 5th Ave in the City and miss it still.
I loved Walden Book and B. Dalton Books, KB Toys, Sam Goodey, The Wall, Spencers(i always felt like a bad kid when in the back of the store)
