Drake makes good fun songs but Hip Hip and Rap has always been about knowledge, representing where you are from, representing your people and speaking up for those people. Drake takes no stands in his music. And just like Pop Music its very weightless, here today and gone tomorrow. This was a fair and accurate assessment of Drake from one of the most respected figures in Hip Hop.
While Drake often dabbles in other styles of music, I think saying he ISN’T Hip-Hop is just wrong. At his core, he’s always been a rapper. I think it’s possible to crossover and be both HipHop and Pop.
Mos Def’s hip hop standards are different. That’s all it is. And to be fair Drake’s recent output hasn’t been the most “hip hop” rich shit save a song here and there. He just saying Drake is commercial and “for everyone”.
Drake is not hip hop. Drake makes pop rap, pop rap is pop, with rap influences. the antithesis of hip hop. Being a rapper doesn’t mean the music you make is hip hop.
Let's be frank here. Do you consider Views a RAP album?? well he has dropped 5 iterations of that album after 2016(More Life, Scorpion, Dark Lemo Tapes, CLB and For all the dogs) with the same formula, same structure and approach. That constitutes over 50% of his discography
i think where Mos Is Coming from is someone creating of art for Mass Production made to sale more art vs an Artist thats just sale just their art and nothing else
I feel like what he’s saying is completely blown out of proportion and people need to watch the interview lbs. Most Def is mad introspective and been apart of the game way too long. His take makes sense
Its sad to me that people see this as hating or jealousy. Like people cant have critical opinions anymore. Yes, Drake makes good music. Yes, Drake raps, utilizes, and is part of elements of hip hop and r&b. However, he himself has said that he's gone pop. "I would have all of your fans if I didn't go pop. And I stayed on some conscious shit." Comes to mind immediately Drake knows what it means to go pop whilst still being in hip hop. It's part of his marketing. He creates the music that he does on purpose because he seeks to cater to everyone. He seeks to stay on trends, and his versatility and ear allow him to know what's poppin and pull it off. He's a mall. It's WHY HES SO POPULAR AND HIS GREATEST TALENT AS AN ARTIST.
I generally agree with adding more sub-genres but rap is a different case. I like experimental stuff like Peggy and dour stuff like Boldy and Conway, but some people probably just shouldn’t be allowed in rap. Imma quote FD here “…Music for people who like black art but don’t necessarily like black people. Ya know…raycysts.” Got too many modern day safe spaces for these people in our art. Got Eminem for people who just want a white icon in a black space with validity, so they hide behind a GOAT like Em to throw out heinous rhetoric even through they know Em hates them (no shade on Em, but even he knows people hide behind him and he hates it). We got Drake with his benign art that ensures you never have to engage with anything about the black experience, just let him give you catchy music you can use for frat parties, stores, etc. Then you have Tom Macdonald for the ones who are completely okay just going mask off on who they are.
The thing is Mos Def wasn’t hatin on Drake. He was telling it like it was! Drake makes pop music. “For all Dogs” was basically a pop album with no Hip Hop songs on it. You want Yaslin Bey a.k.a. Mos Def, who’s a legend in Hip Hop, who’s been in Hip Hop for 27 years to sit up and lie about Drake?
Daylight? First person shooter? Fear of heights? 8am in charlotte??? Calling for you??? What Would Pluto do?? Away from home? Another night?? Are u serious?
Let’s break it down. The interviewer asks is Drake Hip hop, his response is “Drake is pop to me.” The sub text would suggest he’s saying he’s pop not hip hop. But the issue with that is Drake is both and mostly hip hop. Most def talks about the message and what’s happening in the broader world. So what we can infer is that he feels that way about Drake because he thinks his music has no long lasting message. My rebuttal is that’s conscious rap. Hip hop existed before conscious rap. There was hip hop/rap where we just rhymed over dope beats that took elements from different genres. And that’s what Drake does, he’s no different from a LL or Big Daddy Kane, Run DMC, Luda, Kanye, 50 cent, Wayne etc. they’re all hip hop. Hip hop isn’t just consciousness and it never was just that. Sounds like he’s conflating ideas.
You forgot one thing musically Drake is more pop than hip hop..Drake himself was mad at the grammies for calling him hip hop, take care, God's plan, one dance, hotline bling, passion fruit, hold on we are going home are not even rap..
@@afrosamourai400 Drake musically is not more pop than hip hop at all. Hip Hop main audience is black people. Pop main audience is white folks(mainstream). Drake is pop, his music is targeted for mainstream. He himself has said he makes music for everyone. Drake is a popstar that raps. Thats not the same as being a hip hop star.
Mos Def was asked a question and he answered. He is entitled to his opinion and it’s annoying how sensitive everyone is on Drake’s behalf. He’s a grown ass man that makes millions and is richer than most of his contemporaries (as he always says) 🙄.
the Drake hype fans were up in arms about this. I think Yasiin/Mos was being honest about how he sees Drake moving throughout the landscape, but tbh Drake ain't moving too different than a lot of artists/producers/moguls of the past (see- Diddy). So, this is a symptom of the mainstream culture [this is what happens when you commercialize hip-hop at this level]. Yasiin/Mos also might be trying to call attention to the state of the world. the collapse of the U.S. (perhaps other western nations too)? what is music as a whole offering us as we enter a new era in this country (well those that live in the U.S.)? *shrugs* idk.
Drake is still hip-hop, even if he combines it with pop music. However, Mos is right about the music Drake has been making for the past couple of years. It's not complex, deep, or introspective, it's the kind of music you're listening to while shopping at the mall. Drake blending pop and rap isn't the problem, it's what Drake does with it that is the real issue. Making formulaic, only-made-for-consumption music with no longevity or purpose other than to sell.
Drake is a rapper and he’s also a singer. He makes rap music he makes rnb music, he makes other music from other cultures and he also makes pop music. It seems like everybody is arguing the right thing wrong lol.
She asked a question and he answered with his opinion. I took that there is a bigger picture or pictures in the world than what he thinks about Drake. If you listen to his whole interview. I think he was being satirical about the question, because while one wants to debate about who is hiphop or the greatest of all time, people are being slaughtered and oppressed in mass all around the planet...now what does your voice or art stands for. And i think each persons way is their way and neither is wrong or right.
Imagine having this problem with Drake since the beginning. It makes hip hop more boring to watch overall with Drake at the top. Kanye West had to go crazy just to try to pick up the slack for how boring Drake as a person is to watch.
That’s actually true af. Where drake is really formulaic and predictable Kanye pushes boundaries with every project whether people enjoy it or not. I’d even throw Kendrick in that convo as well
Mos Def chose to follow his own lane to be a purist. He never sold out, and he had the opportunity to do so. I believe Mos Def is saying that Drake is very formulaic
I have a hypothesis that needs study so I’m about to bring back the scientific method from school back in the day lmao but with that being said I don’t have any real proof if you haven’t got it by now, but I feel like hip hop these days being more accessible to everyone because the internet is causing his music to get more and more generic in order to generate profit because of the amount of industry ran platforms out there and juveniles using the internet. You either know exactly what I’m talking about or I’m speaking a foreign language.
Fear is probably my favorite drake song I’ve ever heard. I thought/felt that song was who he was. But it seems like instead of growing like Kendrick, Cole, wale, krit he changed. Like damn Drake just be your self that’s if you even know who you are anymore
Being a hip hop artist and being apart of hip hop are two totally different things imo.. James Brown is a part of hip hop but I wouldn’t say he’s “hiphop”
Exactly, James is "Godfather Of Soul", a lot of Hip Hop artists were inspired by him to write and produce their own records, and of course sample his songs.
I think it’s frustrating when people pretend Drake isn’t pop when the pop pursuit has far outweighed his rap pursuits… he stopped pursuing make great rap songs early in his career. He used the platform of rap to launch his pop career the same way other white artists have done in the past. But because he’s mixed, he’s somehow afforded the opportunity to continue to be considered hip hop? Is vanilla ice hip hop? MGK? Post Malone? Let’s be real
From a genre that started and is most notorious for speaking truth to power, and considering issues facing black people generally haven’t gotten better, I think there’s a lot of added value to instilling these messages within your music. Music can touch people and influence them way better than just simple words can. I just think it’s incredibly important to keep that essence alive within a genre that’s becoming increasingly performative and commodified.
Drake is pop . All his most known records at appropriated hits . He does rap but most of his fans know Controlla , take care and etc .. nothing wrong with that . i do think Mos was being condescending but very true

Also big thing to note, being able to rap doesn't make you hip hop. hip hop is a culture that frankly a lot of people don't even care for it's not just a genre or rap
Its not really that Drake doesnt try being conscious, its that what he produces is formulaic, uninteresting and unoriginal in a way that is hard to describe, but also is it really Drake's fault? I think the way his music is pushed is indicative of the general culture's reluctance to move on to new interesting topics that don't even have to be 'conscious' or woke.
Just want to add that Kanye switched his style almost every album and pushed the sound forward. Jay z also tried different things and switched his style
I don't see anywhere in Mos Def's comments, where it's "HATE". Mos Def was asked a question about Drake. Mos Def gave a "well thought out" response. That's not HATE. Mos Def simply put MOST of Drake's catalogue of music, into a box. Then Mos Def labeled that box, as being "POP MUSIC", TO HIM. That's it. Slick Rick is a story teller. Most people label Slick Rick as a story teller. Did Slick Rick ever get upset? NO!!! Krs One is a battle rapper. Most people label Krs-One as a mainstream battle rapper, who from time to time, will drop consciousness songs. Did Krs One ever get upset? NO!!! Michael Jackson is a pop singer. Most people label Michael Jackson, as the greatest pop singer, ever. Michael Jackson , since a child, was always R&B. Did Michael Jackson get upset? NO!!! For those who are claiming that Mos Def is hating, with respect, you need to chill out. All you are doing is moving the goal post, of what is hate, from what is not. By the time you are done, you won't have anyone left, to like anymore. Because you labeled everyone around you, as HATERS. Mos Def did not once say, "He didn't like Drake's music." He just felt that as a WHOLE, Drake's music is not hip hop. When you go through all of Drake's songs, and when you add it all up, Drake is all over the place with his music. So, Mos Def responded with, "Drake is pop to me". That's it. It's just his opinion. That is not hate. The one's who are hating, are those who want everyone else, to AGREE WITH THEIR OPINION. IF YOU DON'T AGREE WITH THEIR OPINION, THEN YOU ARE HATING. LOL!!!!! Guys. Stop it. Just stop it.
If you see the a bit before he answers, she ask him and he's says "why you doin this to me lol". He knew what she was asking and didnt really wanna say because he dont really care but also didnt seem to want to lie either.
This is the same shit Kendrick was on his boots about. Having a massive influence but no message at all EVER! So glad this happened. So glad my fav Yasin was the one to say it.
You cant tell the story of hip hop without Drake. I think he’s super inconsistent at times but he’s a rapper. While hip hop is about change and political ties it also was dancing, partying, rocking the mic Drake has those qualities. I don’t believe all hip hop needs a message and i understand wanting more diversity in the mainstream but at the same time you have you have way more options of artist now than ever before. Drake is introspective mainly around relationships and women and people view that as weak but it’s just another sub genre. I feel the best way to describe Drake in this current era is the Human AI. You can go to a lot of real talented artist for a certain sound a certain feel. Or you can go to the AI music generator make some generic lyrics in a generic beat of a genre of music. And listen to that. I feel Drake is the human version of that which that alone takes talent but. He gives u boom bap sometimes reggaeton Dance melodic rap UK drill rap etc. Is it the best the genre has to offer no but it's the most accessible. For ppl who don't have the time to go thru the wormhole of that genre. Even going into the substanceless and sometimes lack of soul or character with Drake sometimes. It's similar to AI it's listenable sometimes but there's always this feel of there's no real soul or human characteristics about it.
Like my biggest issue with he whole "Honestly Nevermind" album is ppl saying it was him being experimental and we should give a pass. When it's not experimental if not only is it not new sounding music but it's not even new for him. He's done way better dance music years before. So giving him a past for a half assed version of something he's already done is dumb.
You can't focus on sales and obviously trying to stay popular and then be surprised people see you as pop. Not everyone who raps is hiphop and it's not a diss to say someone who chases popularity is a pop star.
i dont get the argument that Drake is the biggest rapper and therefore has to be a great hiphop creative. Macklemore made rap which appealed to pop listeners, and gained a lot of attention and even got a grammy for it. That doesnt mean that he should be celebrated as a great in hiphop. Just because someone raps and gets a lot of streams because it's catchy, doesnt mean it should be considered great hiphop. And it's not even about having to sound like old school hiphop, but just about being original and authentic, which I think Drake's music isnt, that's just my opinion tho. Btw that doesnt mean that fans cant enjoy his music, it just means that what makes his music good are not the same things that make for great hiphop, again just my opinion.

Jid got no grammy love last year while Forever Story (which Yassin Bey Was on) was getting critical recignition, but wasn't on the radio. Even Surround with 21 Savage. Drake still is. I agree, today's fans feel they have to love and make excuses for EVERYTHING their favorite artist does to show they are supporting them.

I generally agree with adding more sub-genres but rap is a different case. I like experimental stuff like Peggy and dour stuff like Boldy and Conway, but some people probably just shouldn’t be allowed in rap. Imma quote FD here
“…Music for people who like black art but don’t necessarily like black people. Ya know…raycysts.”
Got too many modern day safe spaces for these people in our art.

Yasiin Bey told no lies
Incoming drake diss rhyming “most definitely” with “Talib Kweli”
the Drake hype fans were up in arms about this.
Right, there are a lot of ras responses by people who don't realise a LOT of their favourite rap artists are not advocates of Hip Hop culture
Mos didn't lie. He equates Drake music with consumerism and capitalism and he is right.
Mos and Talib has a song with Westside Gunn. So it's definitely not about success or being new.
Drake is a McDonalds burger and Yasmin Bey is a local bar’s speciality burger.
Yasiin Bey is the Krabby Patty Formula you mean.
Making formulaic, only-made-for-consumption music with no longevity or purpose other than to sell.
he is not Hip Hop. he is not interested in the culture, he sings his songs and makes money.
Drake is a rapper and he’s also a singer. He makes rap music he makes rnb music, he makes other music from other cultures and he also makes pop music. It seems like everybody is arguing the right thing wrong lol.
I agree lol

Mos Def was asked a question about Drake. Mos Def gave a "well thought out" response. That's not HATE.
Mos Def simply put MOST of Drake's catalogue of music, into a box. Then Mos Def labeled that box, as being "POP MUSIC", TO HIM. That's it.

Definetely more pop than hip hop. If anything hip pop.
I mean mos wasn't lying.....
i dont get the argument that Drake is the biggest rapper and therefore has to be a great hiphop creative.
Drakes music *was original when he was coming out. He was the OG sensitive fuckboy kinda, atleast in the realm of hip hop. Before drake, people couldnt be as soft(not in a bad way, but idk how to put it another way).
