- Patty Duke presenting George Kennedy with the Oscar® for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in "Cool Hand Luke" at the 40th Academy Awards® in 1968. Introduced by Bob Hope.
George Kennedy has never disappointed me. Memorable in all his films, and he never steals a scene, he just quietly helps everyone else up their game around him.
Amen to all your sentiments, but George WAS a scene stealer in many pictures, including COOL HAND LUKE and especially THUNDERBOLT AND LIGHTFOOT. But I mean it in a benign way. 🙂
The ultimate Beta male
He was even great in the Naked Gun movies lol RIP George, A natural born World Shaka himself
@@yudhveer99You don't know what that term means.
Don’t think so. He steals that scene in The Eiger Sanction when he says to those two Eastern Europeans wanting to look through that telescope “if one of you so much as touches this telescope you’ll need surgery to remove it from your ass”.
George Kennedy was a great actor. He was outstanding in Cool Hand Luke.
Indeed!
He was everywhere on TV for decades from doing ads to playing various roles but did make a few movies as well.
Lucille!!!
He also served under Patton in the Battle of the Bulge.
@@edwardanthony7283 Yes that was what I noted . He played a lot of burly brute heavies but those brutes were finely nuanced as with the one in Thunderbolt & Lightfoot . One minute he is a bully but the next he can have you rolling on the floor laughing. . Yet what escaped many fans and the Critics who dissed him is that George Kennedy had a very fine speaking voice . That is how he became a good Pitchman .
Kennedy said that after he won the Oscar - he was offered ten times as much work - and was able to triple his asking price.
George Kennedy after he won the Oscar ..

Good actors have a ruff profession and they earn it, via residuals. Great actors like this are missing in today's movies.
@@longmemory1620 I guess once he got the critical acclaim he just wanted the money
Well deserved.I just finished the film for the first time at 42.I've watched so many films and just never wanted to catch this.Kennedy made me cry at the end when he attacked No Eyes and howled crying.Dear God and I'm a LIFE LONG Cassavetes Fan(Have all his directed films, shirts with his face on it and I think Victor Franco was top notch)but Dragline was in a Class by himself. He almost steals scenes from Newman a few times.
@@shawnpringle3622there’s many amazing actors working today.
We lost George not too long ago. What a great actor and genuinely nice man he was. May he rest in peace.
He certainly was a nice man. Glad I had the pleasure to meet him!
渡し役のサンディデニスは若くして亡くなった
RIP George. You're a natural born world shaker.
Damn that was ELEGANT!...RIP George Kennedy...kept it short and classy...nice!
Such a heart warming moment for one of the greats. If George Kennedy was around, you knew everything was gonna be okay
George did a hell-of-a damned fine job in that movie. I'm glad he got the recognition he earned!
Filthy mouth.
RIP George Kennedy...Great actor, great talent = Oscar
+blueskys1972 BACK WHEN HOLLYWOOD USED TO MAKE ''''''' MOVIES'''
WITH DIRTY MEN WHO DIDNT CARE WHAT THEY LOOKED LIKE
SCREW YOU CHRIS ROCK
AND TAKE YOUR POLITICAL KRAP WITH YOU
+Edward Koepke So true!
What an amazing group of nominated supporting actors.
Yes, quite a notable group of nominees. The setting and sound seem like a muffled dream compared to the recent awards in a huge setting. Now I have to wiki Pollard. I assume he is deceased.
I'll always love George for being Dragline in the greatest movie in movie history!
Why did ya have to say 50. Why not 30,35 Luke: eh gives me something to do. An activity
Cool Hand Luke is an underrated gem and it should get more love. George Kennedy was 100% deserving of this Oscar.
He was great in the Eastwood film Thunderbolt & Lightfoot.
+Joe Smith
Yes! Great Movie!
AND THE EIGER SANCTION
He was great in every film he was in.
Steve Ellis900 played a great heavy in Sons of Katie Elder gets walloped by the Duke with baseball bat classic
And in Airport as Joe Patroni what a great part that was.
When the Oscars had class and real actors.
Don Juan I can hear him say, that’s my boy Luke. He was one of my best ever☺️☺️.
Don Juan: Couldn't agree more.
Don Juan ...no, they’ve all been frauds just like today.
@@bobbywall172...How about "GET MAD AT THEM DAMN EGGS..."
Kindoff
George and Patty dying within weeks of one another. Sad. Two wonderful actors. George and Patty would agree; live life while you have it folks.
George Kennedy...humble, selfless and so gifted. RIP
Wow. A 15 second acceptance speech. That never happens anymore. RIP.
+Carlos Manriquez In full on agreement. Even better: It was perfectly timed, full-on respectful to all involved in his acting projects & (perhaps best of all?) _NOT_ involving of his political beliefs at all as well, either. Pretty much doesn't happen today, ya' know? God speed to Mr. Kennedy and bless and keep him.
+Carlos Manriquez NOW THEY TALK FOR 30 MINUTES EVERY TIME THEY GET A AWARD , ITS BECAUSE OF POLITICAL RACE AND TEXT MESSAGE KRAP
When Joe Pesci won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Goodfellas in 1991, his acceptance speech was all of five words.
"It's my privilege, thank you"
Let's see that bitch Viola Davis try that sometimes.
Lee Marvins was shorter
"You hang on in there Luke"...what a great movie, and he was fantastic. Well deserved.
Rest in peace, George. You were a fine actor. This was a well-deserved award for you.
In those days style wasn't just a word.
RIP Mr. George Kennedy!
I didn't know you won an Oscar, but I do know you do deserve it! Thanks for everything!
A fan of yours from Hungary.
he has two!
No, only one.
Patty was such a beautiful woman back in the 60's. And you can see a Sean Austin resemblance there too being his mother. George Kennedy, a true great. And a gent. RIP
Sean Astin Looks like his mom and Mackenzie Astin looks like his father
What a cutie pie *deluxe* Patty Duke was! And while I've always known she was very petite, the intellectual awareness of it gives way to the shock of seeing her being towered over by Bob Hope and especially George Kennedy!
Patty's hairstyle is a masterpiece!
Back when award shows were fun and worth watching.
He was Smilin'
It was a great group of actors in that years supporting category, but I do believe that George Kennedy's performance was the absolute best of the bunch
Felt the same. Great group
Great actor, great person. Its great that he is still alive and well. Forever young Mr. Kennedy!
This comment made me sad. RIP George :-(
glad he got his well deserved oscar . he always cracked me up in naked gun rip george k
CHL is my favorite film. To this day, in awe of his winning performance. Respect and regard of him, family and friends in his passing.
What a humble man Mr. Kennedy was. You don't see that kind of talent anymore these days, sadly.
Mr. Kennedy: WHAT A CLASS.
👏👏👏👏👏!!!
One of the very few times the Academy got it right. Great actor !
I thought Estelle Parsons won the Oscar for "Bonnie & Clyde?"
@@williegordon9236 She had. She just turned 95 recently.
@@williegordon9236this was supporting actor award
All 5 Actors were Superb and either one could have won, but George Kennedy was very deserving and a complete class act superb gentleman and marvelous Actor!!!!!
Love George Kennedy. What a humble down to earth guy and great actor too. He made Cool Hand Luke.
Omg !!! That man is soooo handsome, I watch that movie only to watch him over and over, tall, handsome, I was born for a man like that❤🎉❤🎉😍😍😍😍 I dont think there is another man in this planet more handsome than him 💋💋💋 I melt
when actors had class!
or at least the illusion
A great group of nominations for this award, but George really was the best for the award.
These Award shows, most award shows seemed so prestigious back then. Congrats to a great actor in George Kennedy. Recently I saw The Miracle Worker with Patty Duke and I must say her performance in that movie was one of the best performances of any actor in the history of film WOW!
Every time I saw George on the screen a smile would come to my face. Most of us over 50 grew up seeing his work regularly. He could do it all and never disappointed. What a terrific character actor. How he kept a straight face on those naked gun movies was truly a feat in itself.
Hollywood's true TOUGH guy!
Mr. Kennedy "George" if you dared.
A gentle giant of a man from what I've seen growing up watching the classics and Mr. Kennedy was just that "a class act". R.I.P. never forgotten 2023 🐾🐾👣
RIP George Kennedy (February 18, 1925 - February 28, 2016), aged 91
You will be remembered as a legend.
0:57 the beautiful PAUL NEWMAN
the beautiful GENA ROWLANDS :)
Looked like he had that ole Luke smile on him😏
He spoke very few words but they were all so sincere and heart felt.
God I wish I could go back in time, George Kennedy is a cinema legend!
I see George Kennedy and recall his many film roles and I wonder WHO will take the place of these giants. The answer is simple: No one.
One of my most favorite films. It's pretty well known that Kennedy paid for one of the biggest promotional campaigns for the oscar up to that time. Hackman was also great that year in Bonnie & Clyde.
The difference between then and now is the same as in our society: everyone now thinks they deserve accolades for doing mediocre work, in spite of or because of some imagined issue. The actors of the Cool Hand Luke generation learned their craft, knew what was good and what was bad, and made us all proud.
LOOK At All The Other Actors He Was Running Against!
It's a shame they couldn't all win.
@@jimrosenow467 Every one of them Superb!!!!!
Much deserved, Best movie ever seen, Love George Kennedy, The Naked Gun
i don't know. there are just guys like this, you literally ....Love with all your heart. i've always LOVED George Kennedy. yes, yes... a million motion picture stars and personalities...and to be sure, there are some 'others' ( who actually, don't even come to mind right now... which should be a testimony to...just how much'...this guy can eclipse even 'bigger, more well known persona's......) but, I love him. always have... just something about him. truly, one of the most 'real, down to earth, unpretentious Film Stars, ever. he joins a league of extraordinary gentlemen...... and indeed, they are legion....who endear themselves to such an extent that it cannot go unnoticed by those appreciators who look on...... George...if there was ever a guy who i look up to with the most extreme admiration and 'adoration..... it's you.
when the oscars were worth watching
+Jack Hammerhead NOW ITS MOSTLY ABOUT RACE AND POLITICAL SHIT NO WONDER THE OSCARS ARE 5 HOURS LONG
ALL BULSHIT KRAP
Wow Patty and George, two greats of the 50's/60's television on the same stage.
Feb 1968 I was still in my mom's belly waiting for April to come out, but I know for sure the family was watching this while I was safe and warm. Love ya mom. Miss ya all.
Awesome year for Kennedy....Dirty Dozen and Cool hand :)
What a deserving honor for a truly great actor, baby boy!
Go get 'em Bumper. Fantastic actor. Would have loved to have known him. A gentle giant.
George Kennedy was a terrific actor. Dislikes must be family of other nominees.
Aldo Ray turned down that role!
Cool Hand Luke should have at least been nominated for best picture.
Kennedy started off as a soldier and was chosen to act as advisor for the show "Sergeant Bilco" in the fifties.
Phil Silvers talked about him once in an interview and said that he was a very nice man.
R.I.P George Kennedy and Patty Duke
A few quick words and no politics. yeah and a lot of class, no smacking the MC in the face.
Yep.... This is when Hollywood and the Academy Awards had CLASS! Host Bob Hope was simply the best. The years have proven him irreplaceable. The nominees for this category were incredible: John Cassavetes, Gene Hackman, Michael J. Pollard, and of course, George Kennedy. All gave fantastic performances. This clip reminds me of the good old days of my youth and the country - just before the terrible division of Vietnam. The quiet before the storm. Fun to look back and reminisce.
And the remarkable Cecil Kellaway!!!!!
He was wonderful in Airport in 1970 as Joe Patroni he stole every scene he was in just a few key important dramatic few scenes but they were so memorable he was the best character in the movie.
Can you ever imagine looking out in that crowd and seeing Paul Newman clapping for you?
Isn't it something that when a celebrity who wins a prestigious award comes up to give his/her acceptance speech, one you would love to hear go on for a minute or so, humbly and emotionally takes a mere 15 seconds or so? That's an era sadly gone forever! Oh, and Patty Duke (whom I always loved anyway) looked absolutely stunning! People had so much class back then!
I remember him from Earthquake and The Eiger Sanction...but he made so many great film. Always very watchable and talented as an actor. I always like him...
RIP GEORGE
Cecil Kellaway was a great character actor. His performance in "Harvey" is priceless.
These so called actors now should learn from big George how to make an acceptance speech. He said everything needed in less than 30 seconds.
Well said. Short, sweet, and to the point. A class act.
George was always a great supporting actor in big movies.
Wow RIP George. sighs, good man.
TWA mechanic Joe Patroni got that 707 off the runway so Dean Martin could land it safely..even since then i always loved George Kennedy when i was a kid..Thanks George and Godspeed to you
George was PHENOMENAL as Joe Patroni! Joe getting the 707 out of the snow was my favorite scene from the entire film!!
George Kennedy was a great heavy, in so many classic motion pictures. In real life, the total opposite to his actual personality. He was a decent man, and caring. He was a World War 2 soldier, highly decorated for bravery.
His Oscar win really did catapult George Kennedy into the forefront of character actors in movies. He had been known predominantly as a secondary player in television shows and films like Lonely Are The Brave with Kirk Douglas and Charade with Cary Grant, usually as the "heavy". Hackman subsequently won a Best Actor Oscar for The French Connection and a Supporting Actor Oscar for Unforgiven.
1:40 Cutest acceptance hug right there !
What a warm and healthy spirit is george kennedy. Watch his brief interview about his book TRUST ME.
Well deserved. Wonderful actor! Love you George!!!
I never thought Bob Hope was a bit funny and once again he proves it.
Great performance.......and a very deserved award.
He is the oldest Oscar winner still alive (in a competitive category, for the actors).
Luise Rainer is the oldest winner for the actresses.
what a gem and won't be many more like this guy.george rocks.
Great man....RIP George, you gentle giant....truly one of the great ones.
Wonderfull performance in a fabulous movie, RIP George..
Funny coincidence that George co-starred with John Cassavetes in The Dirty Dozen. The film John was nominated in the same category. I was surprised John didn't win, but George was also amazing.
When the Oscars were just about movies and not the 4 hours of PURE BS it sadly has evolved into. How I miss those days. RIP Mr. Kennedy

One of my favorite actors.
Thank you GEORGE KENNEDY for doing your part to help tame mankind with your talent. May GOD bless your legacy...
What a great year for movies - 1967.
As great as Newman was, Kennedy made that film iconic. What a humble man.
Now I wanna watch Cool Hand Luke again. Later.
Excellent movie and he played this role awesomely
Compare this man, this moment to *any* from last night's Academy Awards show and you will understand why I do not watch the Academy Awards any more.
+GrumblingGrognard I still watch the Oscars, but I had the same feeling as you did watching this clip. Such dignity! And no politics.
+GrumblingGrognard BACK WHEN HOLLYWOOD MADE MOVIES THAT WERE WATCHABLE ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,NOT LIKE THE REALITY KARDASHIAN REALITY SHOW KRAP NOW
ESPECIALLY no politics.
Short. Sweet. Gracious. Classy. That's how they did it, back in the day!
Everything was so much more authentic at that time. I miss that.
I absolutely adore George Kennedy. He made everything he was in so much better. What a terrific man.
just look at all the great actors on this youtube page jane, jason, gene, paul, james, elizabeth, john, estelle, patty, robin . george fit right in.
