- From Garrison's beloved radio show, here is the classic Tuna Noodle Casserole ballad/hymn/parody with words and harmony by Keillor to the tune of "Whispering Hope".
And here is a link to my Jean Redpath playlist:
• Jean Redpath (1937-2014)
". . . Only a small can of tuna,
Mushroom soup, celery and peas,
Mixed with a quart of egg noodles,
Sprinkled with chips and with cheese . . . "
"To call Jean Redpath a Scottish folk singer is a bit like calling Michelangelo an Italian interior decorator." - Edinburgh Evening News
I remember when this was originally aired in the eighties. I will never forget the happiness of listening to A Prairie Home Companion on Saturday evening, knowing that a I would hear it again, and tape it for later enjoyment, on Sunday afternoon.
Echo that. When will,we hear the like again?
YES, An Angel was called home today. Bless you Jean and R.I.P.
Lyrics as close as I can tell......
Soft as the voice of my Mother, calling as night shadows fell. Calling her children to supper. Oh what a heavenly smell.
There on the dining room table, served from a steaming glass bowl. Eaten with jello and kool-aid. Tuna, the food of my soul.
Tuna casserole, oh how dear to my lips. Noodles and tuna, and mushrooms and chips.
Only a small can of tuna, mushroom soup, celery and peas. Mixed with a quart of egg noodles, Sprinkled with chips and with cheese.
When my every journey is over, gladly I take to the air, afterwards in the church basement, they'll serve tuna casserole there.....Lord willing.
Tuna casserole, oh how dear to my lips. Noodles and tuna and mushrooms and chips.
Theresa Voigt, thank you. As I sit here with family preparing for my grandmother's homegoing, I chanced upon this video. My Midwestern childhood memories of my grandmother set to music. Bittersweet.
Velveeta cheese...
Now an angel in spirit as well as voice. Rest in Peace Jean. Your voice is heavenly.
I remember hearing this on the radio. I was smiling and chuckling because my mom served tuna casserole when I was a kid. But when Garrison Keillor said, “You know the recipe, sing along.” I burst out laughing!🤣. The fact that they were able to sing this so sincerely and beautifully made it all the funnier! Oh how I miss A Prairie Home Companion.
An Angel called home today.. RIP
Aye, Jeannie Redpath ne'er a voice passed or present can ever be compared to your ain.

Thanks for posting this. I found the "other" tuna casserole song by Garrison everywhere... haven't been able to find THIS ONE anywhere else. :-)
I’ve only recently heard this for the first time. Beautiful.
