I need a grainydays x Kyle McDougall collaboration immediately
grainy mcdougs. new channel. comedy, baxter, landscapes, and canadian accents.
Actually all three of you in the same vid would be very nice to see.
you too Brae and Bryan!
except Kyle lives in the UK now
@@Slamagotchi he's back in Canada...I think.
Lab: How overexposed should your images be?
Jason:Yes
9 out of 10 wedding photographers agree
@@Zeoklis best way to mask a shitty venue i guess
Honestly my favourite time to be on UA-cam is when I see a Grainy Days video
This is really Amasing to see! ive grown up climbing mountains in the Sierras with my father and family friends, i finished the John Muir Trail climbing Mt Whitney in 2019. After all the 221 miles i completed, and the beautiful scenery ive seen,it never occured to me to shoot any film there. ive been collecting cameras for a little over 3 years and all my childhood nostalgia has been backpacking in the great mountains, this truly made me happy to see one of my favorite photographers strolling around, walking to places that ive been before, and taking incredible photos where i grew up, Thank you
A Shiner at 7:19! Awesome. Seriously I enjoy your series after now seeing a few episodes. Your blend 'of not in a rush' slightly cynical but charming narrative in stand-up comic style, range of beautiful country (this one maybe takes the cake) and abandoned buildings for subjects continues to intrigue as well as being clearly in the do film or die culture is fabulous! Keep up the great work and making pictures Jason!
Could those wonderful corner lighting effects be that you load film in a rather cool fashion, in direct sunlight ??
For those who may care, the light leaks on the 120 rolls he mentions are caused by inadequate tension on the paper leader at loading, which allows the initial leader to wrap the spool loosely. In turn this causes the film's diameter on the takeup spool to be too large, extending beyond the light protection of the spool ends. The solution is to put some pressure with your thumb on the new film roll when first winding on the leader, keeping it tight. My Pentax 67 has the same potential problem. Basically, the camera's tension on the film supply spool is inadequate.
hey dude I know you use a lot of humor and self doubt in your videos, but your work is really great and your knowledge is super helpful for others. I hope to see more zines and even a book from you!
whole lot of really rad shots in this one. dope music too. I shot XP2 for the first time recently and it kiiiinda bangs. gonna be getting more pretty soon.
So much beautiful nature in US, so perfect for photography. All these shoots makes one wish one lived there.
Always a good day when you show up with your cheery, dulcet tones, giving me enormous enthusiasm for all things film photography. The joy is almost overwhelming. 😄👌🏼
Good god, I need to get back out west. Only been to LA twice and did an eight day road trip through Colorado, but the variety in the landscape is faaaabulous!
Can't believe you didn't pick up that Advantix. APS means Awesome Photo System. Or Awful Photo System. Something like that ... Love the shot from the hotel room door at night.
Only Jason would have the brilliant idea of opening a video with a toilet (I was actually sitting on one while watching, of course) Man you sure got a whole pile of great shots! I'm gonna go subscribe to Caleb's channel and check out his stuff 😁
Hey, it's you!
That Mamiya lens at f11 hits different.
Jason, you should try developing your own film. I recently started developing ilford hp5+, and I was suprised how easy that is. Such a joy to do it yourself, go for it!
Thanks for this nice video. This gives me a chance to take a trip down memory lane. I stopped at the place with the old abandonned blue/green/cyan car last year at about the same time. This is so nice to see this random place again, in your video, through your lens ! Keep up the good work.
Made a pilgrimage to this video to see the taking of the legendary toilet photo
NGL that "not that impressive" shot (14:32) was probably my favorite.
Phil Knall I was thinking
the same
@@zairrewright4131 hah great minds think alike dude
What a great video Man you inspired me to load my Canon Film Camera and go out into the wilderness to shoot some Analog BNW...
if you watch any TV you'll see that same abandoned house (16:20) in a commercial for some real estate company....it's an older picture of the house, with much of the green roofing still on top. I took a picture of that same house back in 2010 or 2011and it's hanging on my wall. The house is fading fast when compared to a few years ago, a natural process.
Enjoying your videos.
Great video and presentation. A little envious of your gear.
Crazy places!
My favorite shot is the toilet one, the colors and composition look really cool
Nice photo-trip-with-friend.
I didn't know that Portra 400 worked well at daylight... 🔝
the pictures b&w is the best for me thanks you are the best ! :)
How the hell did you make that 3D looking animation in the outro? Pretty sure I haven't swallowed any colored pill today
Just watched the Blender video and it looks pretty complicated to me, but I think it depends on what you find easy and what not. A while ago I found this video where they use Photoshop instead, hope you find it usefull : )

22 minutes later I'm scrolling eBay for a medium format camera I can't afford
Get your self a Mamiya 6 (the 50s folder model) or any other folder medium format camera (Fujica 6, Zeiss Ikon, Afga Isolette or Konica Pearl are the ones that I can recommend you). Those models are old but quite reliable and inexpensive (always bellow $100 usd), besides most of them have masks for the frame that allow you to take photo in both; 6x4.5 or 6x6.
Cheers!
@@peskymacaw9033 I personally like shooting with a Kodak tourist, but I would recommend something with a bit more as far as shutter speeds and aperture. There are some tlr's that can be had pretty cheap
Try going for a Kiev 60, Pentacon six lenses are plentiful, and the shutter speed goes to 1/1000. And as a added bonus, you can beat someone to death with it. (it weighs 2kgs with the standard 80mm lens)
@Mr_Romo he said the older one not the “newer” version

Idk what I liked better, the lone geology joke or that sweet sweet 2nd gen 4runner
4:40 Alabama Hills looks surprisingly like The Adobe Flats from the classic movie Bad Day at Black Rock
Fkng amazing videos, love your vibe!!! Amazing shoots!
SO GOOD!
"Blew it up" that'll earn yourself a like.
Yellow backpack adds great yellow
Casually clicks bangers
Awesome video, awesome trip and awesome shots!
Amazing how you can't get any bad colors with overexposed portra. Overexposed sky on digital becomes horrid white or washed out grey, and on portra you still get lovely color out of it.
Dope.
Oh my.
Haha the way he waved hiiii in the mirror ;3
I was there at the sierras while on my way to lake tahoe back in 18'
3:12 love that photo omg😍😍😍😍😍😍
Thanks guys, that is so inspiring !
THIS VIDEO DESERVES MORE VIEWS
Ah. What it must feel like to have a camera buddy. stuff of dreams
vertical formations caught my eye, I guess I'm a nerd :)
Same :)
Do you know the name of that beach/lake? I'd love to visit 🥺
for the rolls you rated not at box speed (portra 400 at 160, hp5 at 800 etc) did you develop at box speed? Also, how did you decide on the 80mm for the Mamiya? I've always liked 65mm for landscapes but I've seen a bunch of people shoot landscapes on the 80mm.
I WANT THIS CAMERA!
Yo! What filters were you using on the B&W-stuff? Cheers from Germany.
Your videos always inspire me to shoot more film, just grab my ass and hit the road to new places. Greetings from 🇺🇦
“...And took a shoot of the toilet before we blew it up”-Jason 2020😂❤️
Btw I’m still watching❤️
Hi Grainydays i love your portra 400 overexposed photos. They have this pastel look to them. Other than overexposing them (2 stops?) is there anything else I need to do to achieve that look? I really appreciate your content. Thank you!
example would be 10:31
And do you edit your portra 400 images?
nice how you placed that boot
I love the Ilford XP2 shots in this video, do you use that anymore?
You get the feeling someone's watching you? We're all watching you, Jason! MWAHAHA.
those xp2 rolls were, as they say, straight gas
XP2 looks nice. I’ll have to try that
What is your backpack in this video? The sand colored one? Thanks
it's so wholesome seeing you together shooting film
more please!
Serious question. I shoot analog, I have my film developed, scan it with an high end epson scanner, negative lap pro... they turn out like shit. What are you doing to make your images look good.
what is bad about it? could be a lot of things. also the way the video is edited really helps alot more than you would think, the white boarders do a lot for an otherwise average picture.
I fuck with 12:11 - that is a super, super sweet shot.
Dang that Elisha David track is hot
Came to watch film cameras
Stayed for the 4 runner
I've seen a decent amount of Jason's videos to ask you guys: has anyone seen him smile yet or is it only in secret when looking at fresh negs?
Did you have to worry about snakes? I LOVE shooting film. I was rolling my own B&W and developing my B&W & Color film. But it's getting harder to get developing chemicals up here. Happy Times... But sold my film gear last year and went to Sony FF. I also enjoy shooting abandon buildings and cars. The stories they could tell... GREAT video btw
DRUGS @4:20 i see you @grainydays lol
How many miles on the Toyota?
17:05 photo is a banger
What’s the name of that beach thooooooooo
What do you shoot Cinestill 800t at? I often read that you should rate it at about 500?
photo book when?
@11:45 that mountain looks fake. So good.
Once the pandemic is over, let me know if you make up here to Portland. Can share all the fun spots 😄
Have you tried Silbersalz35s offering yet?
18:00 👌
If Garfield was a human. Haha
Came for the photos, stayed for the nonchalant humor.
Less than a beginner here; when you say 800 iso is 1 stop underexposed, how do you know? I’m not challenging you, genuinely asking.
Did I just see a square format picture? Are you OK Jason?
Jason can you recommend that brevite bag for a 4x5 kit or would it be too small
@badflashes uses it for his 4x5 set up I believe
that donner party joke was a1.
My G.O.C.T. (current time) is probably Chris Boland.
You guys burn film like it's whiskey 😳. Careful with water on Mamiya M7 lenses: it was not my mother in law who spilled a glass of water on my 150mm and which I subsequently had to send in for repair (the lens that is). And have you ever thought about buying a Horizon S3 from Russia?
"NERD" lol @10:15
Do you use a black promist filter?
those 6 dislikes are people who shoot on digital
5:45 😵😵😵😵😵😵
How do you get this god damn cool pastel colors??? Maybe you're just Portra god like Willem Verbeeck
Taaaaasty shots
Do you edit your film photos?
Really enjoy your videos & work. nice style!
commenting before I watch the video but if baxter isn’t featured then i’m suing you for all your portra
I have a sad but true confession to make, but I don't like any grain in my B&W film work, but I don't mind it in my larger colour prints....go figure, 'cause you know.
i don’t know if you’ll see this, but your videos are so good that i want to die.
What do you do with all of these photos? I expect both a dark and twisted answer and an actual answer.
Yes, I can relate to being broke after buying too many film cameras.
SECOND! ( Might be first, but just to be sure...)
20:48, "butt punk", immediately panned to Jason.
Fuuuuqqqqqq this is good content.
make a zine with this bro
