The only piece of advice I have, which I firmly believe kept you from finishing, is dedicating proper time on strength and conditioning to train the ligaments in your joints and muscles to be able to take so much impact. As you said, it’s not really running, which is more about speed and fitness, but more about strength and endurance, which you have to train for accordingly. Great effort though! 👍
To have the mental strength you had even though you weren’t enjoying it is amazing! Seems you have sorted every aspect of that race in your head and you can move on to the next It takes real strength to DNF especially that far in Be very proud of your achievement Great video 🙌🙌
Great effort this Ross.. a terrifying ultra.. when we grew up on a council estate my dad trained me and my brothers to be footballers to gain a way out.. Andy ( Mcateer) my older brother went on to play for Preston North End.. I remember as an 18 year old he played against John cheidozi.. a rapid winger who went on to play for England.. he was given a torrid time as the rapid player ran him ragged.. after the game Andy was crestfallen and said to my dad.. “ where do I go from here” .. my dad said “ to the top..you learned more today than you’d ever have learned if you’d have had an easy game.. about yourself and what it takes to be a good professional.. you’ll go on and play over 300 games for north end I promise you..hard experiences are what football and life is all about”.. My dad was right and he did And so will you go on to do more hard challenges.. because this race is what it’s all about and will take you to the next level.. Well done Ross.. you did fantastic 👏👏💙
Great Video! I have only done the 50k Route couple of years ago and that was hard enough! Very technical, way harder than the Alps. Great Job, no shame running a 70+ miles!! Thanks for sharing!
That was a great video…I felt every step with you..but my goodness that was more like a mountain climb with the odd jog in between! Sterling effort. Amazing scenery too. Always enjoy your videos…and post race analysis. You couldn’t have done anymore!
Great video Ross. I did the 100 miler too, and it was by a long way the toughest 100 mile race I've ever done. Tougher than Istria 100, tougher than TransGranCanaria, tougher than Cheviot Goat. Even tougher than some long, multi-day races such as Cape Wrath Ultra, Northern Traverse, full Summer Spine and the Winter Spine Challenger races. Talking to other finishers at the end, it was much harder than UTMB. In the UK, perhaps only Dragon's Back and the full Winter Spine come close. Well done on getting as far as you did, and don't give up hope of getting round the full 100 mile course in the future - as you say it's the technical descents that kill you, but that's trainable.
@@runnerrossco2483 Might see you there. I'm #15 on the waitlist, which means I'll probably get a call-up some time in Nov/Dec. Small matter then of doing the Arc 10 days later ...🤣🤣🤣
I feel your pain.. I timed out on the 50, I made mistakes with hydration which knocked my nutrition.. but what did it, was my quad death.. I could no longer put in the effort to get to, what was my last check point 3, in time, I had to walk where I should’ve been trotting down. And that was after a only 21 something miles.. in my case it was also obvious I hadn’t been able to do enough of the right training. Took me a little while to get over, as it’s my first DNF.. Can’t imagine the feeling of doing 70+ miles and having to stop.. good luck for the next one! I’ve re-entered for next year.. need to get that finish done in the uts! Not sure id ever be able to the 100mile..
Thank you for sharing your experience. I'll be on the start line this year. I've done a few recces and I am used to technical but Snowdonia really does dish up another level and I agree...loads more hiking than trail running. Well done!
Brilliant effort Ross. Brutal course on a brutal day - the heat on Saturday was far hotter than expected and just 1 more thing to contend with. I was on the 100k and dropped out on the way up Moel Siabod (after checkpoint 4). I'm determined to go back and finish at some point - if you do have another go it'll only be easier, you know what you're in for and the weather can't be any worse. No worries if it's not for you though. We run for enjoyment after all, and the best videos to watch are the ones where you're having a good time!
Great effort mate, I did the 100km and I completely know where you're coming from. Those decents aren't for mere mortals you need to be able to float to be able to run them, plus it was roasting as well. A lot of people said the 100km was much harder than lots of 100 milers they'd done.
Great video. I had a very similar experience in this years 100m. Shame I didn’t bump into you. The brutality of the climbs, deceits and technicals really caught me off guard. But I’m glad I met my match. I learned so much from all of the mistakes I made. A good chunk of them being mental. Will be back in 2025. See you around. Adam W
Tough one, but good learning. Take time to reflect, maybe you will want to give mountain running another bash in the future. Maybe a shorter race with loads of elevation as an intermediary. Or the west highland way variant that finishes by adding Nevis?
I just got into running and ran for 31km yesterday and can hardly walk today. Hold your head high mate that was an amazing effort 👏 Earned a new sub from me 👍🏼 away to watch some of your other videos now 😄
That looked brutal. Sorry about the DNF but still an amazing experience and some valuable lessons learned. I definitely prefer rolling hills and more runnable courses and the steep and rocky technical stuff is my nemesis. As you say, onwards and upwards now. Enjoy St Cuthbert's Way - don't know if you've done it before but it's a cracking race... Anything planned between SCW and RAS? Anyhow, another great video. See you on the start line in Portpatrick 👍
Cheers for commenting Matt. Yeah ran the SCW in 2017 but looking to shave a couple hours off that time this year. After SCW it’s all about preparing for the RAS.

Cheers Tom. What you say is very interesting and rings so true. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Great Effort for getting to Beddgelert! Honestly think that with an effort like that UTMB is by no means unreasonable!
Thanks for this video. Really enjoyed the honest post race analysis.

Thanks Lorna. Yeah there was some amount of climbing, which I kinda expected but I guess I never appreciated just how severe the descents would be.
Great footage and narration..... I'd never think of it as a DNF but I'd be so proud to finish the Ultra and such a superb distance 70 Miles + Boom!!!

All the best with your training this time around - you’ll smash it next year 💪💪
Great video mate, had a very similar experience last year (dnf at CP8 after a fall and broken poles). Back this week for round 2 with the 100 miler.
Best of luck mate. Hope you smash those demons.

I’m in this years races this is my first ever 100 mile race I did Ironman Bolton few years ago but this is going to kill me to a different level
@@lewiswalsh369 let's do this!!! Nothing like a little challenge
Solid effort and a wonderful video to watch 👌
Thank you. I’ll never be able to properly explain how tough it was.
Very well done, you did the best you can 😅😅😅 thanks for sharing your experience

As each day passes I’m more inclined to suck it up and attempt it again next year. Time is a great healer 🤣
Great effort. Warm out there. Great views. Tough one. Best wishes to you and your channel. New sub.

Yeah I think I’ve already decided the beast has to be tamed. Will come better prepared next time. Learned loads from this years DNF.
Great effort Ross, give it some more time and im sure you will be looking to try something similar again. Cant wait for your next adventure.
Thank you. I’m actually hovering over the ‘enter now’ button for next years event….

Yeah defo need to tailor a run or series of runs which feature steep tricky descents.

300 ft/mile isn't running. For me, anything over 22-24k/100 miles just isn't interesting. Just going for a hike at that point.
