Reminds me of the film Witchfinder General. Doing metal detecting I am finding more about history. James vi later James 1 of England and Scotland was heavily involved in all this. When he was King of Scotland he was betrothed to Anne of Denmark. There were heavy storms and Anne could not make the journey from Denmark to Scotland. James went to Denmark, where he found that witches were blamed for the storms. He brought this idea back to Scotland and started persecuting witches. He even wrote books on the subject. When he became King of England too he brought the persecutions south with him. Not something that seems to be commonly known or talked about. Happy reading.
