Not only was Gordon Jacob a very fine composer in his own right, he also orchestrated works by Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Holst with empathy and flair. Both Suites here are excellent examples of his tremendous skill. The Hampshire Suite is probably the more popular of the two but I'm equally happy with both. So, if, like me, you're an admirer of Holst AND Jacob, you'll love these great Lyrita recordings.
I am a musicophile who loves to hear works depicted in many different ensembles. An outlier in the world of Classical Music. This is delightful music, in any form, I now see!
Frederick Fennell (who was a major presence in the world of Woodwind Band) was teaching at Interlochen in the '80s when my daughter was attending summer camp there. He was hitting on the wind band students pretty hard. My spouse and I met up with him at the edge of a lake and had a magical exchange. I was taking art classes at USC-ISOMATA in California in 1966-69, and would hear the band practicing this work, Lots of intense memories!
Bravi! A very fine and elaborate arrangement .However, it conserves the initial brass-band equilibrium by the composer. It's also very interesting to examine this military band spirit, especially of the 2nd suite ,(probably the best), when performed by U.S., English or even japanese wind-ensembles.

Nice to see these band pieces arranged for an orchestra, instead of the usual other way around. Goes to show just how amazing these compositions were.
Very neat
Same thing with English Folk Song Suite
The euphonium solo in the second suite sounds soooo nice on viola 🔥

This delightful orchestration brings back memories of when I played in band in high school. Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for bringing these wonderful arrangements to my ears.

Edward Elgar, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, William Walton, Ron Goodwin are the best British composers
