You have really good intonation on fretless, MAJOR kudos!
"my intonation sucks" is what would a good player would usually say. i'm very happy that Jeroen is rejoining Obscura. great cover man :)
Oh man, the tone you are getting on that axe is just beautiful. It's so smooth and woody.
I always love seeing you playing a fretless. Such a nice sound to it. If I could make a request, make more videos with your fretless basses.
That tone is beautiful.
Yeah !
Thank you for the covers!
You're one of my biggest influences in terms of technical metal
Amazing.. as usual. I put Jeroen and you as a great inspiration when I started trying my fretless lines.
I'm not worthy! Man so brutal so brutal. Your skills are flawless... RESPECT!
The tones on all these damn 6 string fretless bass….. absolutely love it! 🤘
I fucking love fretless basses. Awesome as fuck cover
Speechless as ever man! Good job :)
I've been really wanting to pick up bass lately, and watching your videos makes me want to play so much more.
I love the sound and tuning on your spector and warwick basses. You're an aweasome bass player dude
You are the metal bass god.😎🤘Thanks for all the awesome vids mate.
This is so pleasurable to the ear.
Great Job men!!! the sound of your fretless is brutal, grettings from Venezuela.
Awesome job man, incredible. You play the octaves very clear, the intonation is perfect :D
This is badass! Thanks Mark for sharing!
Looks like a fun song to play. Great job A.J.
I love how this popped up in related videos as I am watching Muenzner's new solo stuff. You're moving up in the world or something dude
love your obscura covers.
Awesome bro. Love your playing
Ten times thumbs up!
Love your tone!
I really like the way you edit your videos together! I'm watching some of your playthroughs again so i can try and learn and i noticed that these can help train ears for learning, since it's an unlined fretless it's easy to see the way you move your hand for each note but it also helps since to learn it you have to find the notes yourself... Not sure if it makes sense to everyone but this has really helped my ear and fretless playing :) so thanks :D
Absolutely fantastic.
Keep up the great work, AJ!
Man, the range that bass goes to. It's a workout for my headphones too!
Superb performance and tone!
That sounded awesome!
Even with the "bad" intonation, which wasn't bad at all ;)
Thank you! Very good video, please do more Obscura covers!
Unreal dude
I like how your basses are just jumping to different stores of the room
Amazing someone can play fretless at this level .
Excellent.

Sounds like alison hell by Annihilator. Awesome cover!
O my god ! I love this music ! Cool !!!
Absolutely fucking sick cover man 🤘🏻
amazing cover
Man, you're the best! \m/
Monster bass tone
sick playing and nice deeds shirt
Savage, great cover.
Amazing!
Nice balance of bite and fretless musicality.
Fu*king great man! greating from Argentina
And who says bassists don't mean shit in a band?? Imbeciles.
People who only listen to shitty metal where the bass is drowned out
The recent remastered version of Human (and the other albums) has much more audible bass. OK, like all modern remasters, they've brickwalled it, but I compared it to the original vinyl pressing and actually preferred the remastered CD. Mainly because of the more audible bass!
Too many bands just shoved a bass in a friend’s hands and said just play these notes. I’ve personally been in bands that have done it. You end up with a guy on stage with very little experience and no theory plucking notes. It’s really nice to see these bassists standing out and adding value to a song. I especially love counterpoint melody that some of these guys to a song. Sadly though, there’s a lot of bands whose guitarist shit bricks if they aren’t the center of attention and even talented players still get lost in a mix. My 1.5c worth of opinion.
You have improved a lot in your intonation. Fucking great.
thanks! iv practiced this song quite a bit. i learned it 2 years ago just never got around to putting it up.
Fuckin class dude.... Nice bassturbation....
BEST COVER
This is fucking beautiful
Respect.
Who thumbs downed this video???? I'm gonna find you!!! Great vid!
You got a great tone out of that bass.
Well Steve Bailey, another awesome bass player and Warwick endorser teaches at Berklee College, and even he said it's impossible to play in tune 100% of the time on a fret less bass. We strive to keep our percentage high, but never at 100%. With that said, you are an amazing fret less bass player.
naw that"s pretty good dude. \w/. I would love to have a fretless
Good Job Guy
what a speeddddd
what a fucking tone.
Man.
You're a fucking monster. Awesome job, mate.
Fuckin' master of fretless bass guitar! Totally admire U
This reminds me of a thunderstorm.
Always love your covers! Btw, what happened to your Septuagint cover? That one was beautiful and helped me discover Obscura!!!
hey mate always enjoy your vids what does the ibanez btb7 string like to play no music shops in my area ever have one available.
Sounds good man. I fell in love with the sound of a fretless bass. Where has it been all my life?
stop being humble. This video was very good. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Your intonation sucks...?! Nooooo! I like it!
Гитара без ладов? Для этого слух нужен. Круто, круто. Респект.
You should definitely check and eventually cover Gotsu -Totsu-Kotsu, you will love those bass licks from Haruhisa Takahata
👂 gasm
Are you sponsored by Warwick ??your collection is badass
no i am not, but i love the company so much that i will rep their gear to the day i don't play bass anymore.
I've never played a fretless bass but I feel like it must be insanely hard
Fuck dude you killed it!
Just telling you, they are a new band
cooll
Probably my favorite Obscura song. Gonna use this video to kind of cheat learning this by ear for sure, I am terrible at it but I NEED to learn how to play this.
Great cover too.
Uhh, how the hell do your basses keep teleporting to different sides of the room though? It's almost like you quickly spin your chair around for every camera angle or something. Weird.
Probably just recorded the entire song in different videos (which would explain the guitars on different sides) and then just cut them up to fit. And just recorded the bass sound during one of the takes. Not sure though, just an assumption
3 different videos for 3 different angles. since i dont have 3 cameras i cant do all of them at once. and yes, i did spin my chair around and press record for the different angles.
CannibalisticZombie That just sounds like much more work than playing it once. So for some of the angles were you like, pretending to play? Sort of bass-syncing?
One take would be less work, yes, but then he'd need 3 cameras, and to set of the angles at the same time. Plus, then he wouldn't have 3 takes to choose from by default, as I believe he is actually doing the play through all 3 times, choosing the best one for the audio, and throwing out the other two.
круто
fuck yeah
haven't seen any covers with the warwick on the far left
how did you get that sweet tone? could you make a video on this please ^ ^
Great cover man, COULD YOU PLEEEEAAAAASEEEEE cover some Necrophagist??????
also where did you get that giant warwick banner? i want one for my new (predominantly warwick) bass room once its set up :D
hi, how is the EQ to get this so nice tone ? I got a thumb fl 5 two days ago, it's an awesome bass !
Awesome performance!
Question: Do you work for/are endorsed by Warwick, by any chance. Just curious. It's my first time on your channel.
awesome cover. I'm actually looking into getting a fretless soon myself.
Do you have a particular album that's your favorite for fretless? I go for either "The Aura" or anything Sadus.
dude you kick ass, I wish we were buddies. I can play fretless bass I just got a 6 string fretless bass in September last year (2015) but it would be nice to know all the shapes and what key obscura is using in the song's you jam and how what modes transfer to the key in relation to the bass chords. I'm kind of stuck in pentatonic and the actual blues scale. I can play majors and minor. it's mainly what scales and modes can you use within those scales to get that non generic metal sound.
+Allen Sanford look up and study the modes- also for weirder stuff like this learning some basic theory will always help and for sure will make the modes easier to understand. modes are usually how more ambiguous moods are put across in songs.
How do you get this overwhelming sound ? It is an effect or are the settings of the bass ?
The best day so far. Thanks You did it ...you did it.... thanks a lot. That means a lot to me although I know you don't accept requests/suggestions, I secretly wanted you to cover either Vortex or transcendental as a second from their third lp. Thanks man. \m/ lml /,,/
When you expect the least, you get something that completely changes your day. lml
Where can I find a tab for this??
listen by ear that's how he did it, it will make you 10x better musician then you think you are watch how he plays too its what i did and its made a big difference in my fretless playing. i really recommend going by ear especially with a fretless
Your intonation suc- jk great cover
What's the tuining in obscura songs for bass, I know it's standard D or A for 6 and 7 strings guitars, but the bass???
way better than your other fretless covers i must say. I hope i have half of your talent man. Cheers from Chile.
BTW, which fretless basses do you recommend to start on fretless ?
I know i'm not the man himself, but i'd recommend getting a quality bass and defretting afterwards, by yourself or a professional. That's what I have done and I'm pleased with the results.
ACoolStupidDog
sounds a good option too since fretless basses are not cheap :/. I would go for an ESP and then defretteded.
I once asked him about the Brice HXB 406 he used to have (look for the cover of Incarnated by Obscura he did a while back), and while he said that he didn't like the bass overall, he recommended it to someone who wanted to start out on six string fretless, since it's only $400 or so. That's pretty competitive with a defret in terms of price, if not quality. Additionally, sometimes Rondomusic has cheaper six strings from their Douglas or SX brands available as fretless, albeit not as often as the HXB 406, which are sub $200, but get snapped up quickly.
i have a question, does the frets of the bass affect it's tone. Because common metal basses or any bass has like a powerful treble tone but fretless basses as what i observe have a ground bass like tone. Is it the frets or the pickups affecting it? sorry to ask
well since the strings vibrate again wood it won't produce the same sound as a string vibrating again somekind of metal ... but that guy pretty much EQ is fretless like anyone playing metal with somekind of overdrive to get that treble clack which you won't hear in a jazz setting
Zero dislikes ;)
Locking nut for the two highest strings??
I had to give this a rewind...
Thesseling in Obscura composed some of the best bass lines ever. I can' wait for the new album.
