I went on both Wikipedia *and* the fandom wiki page for Kaneko after reading your comment because tbh in the back of my mind, I'm asking the same thing.... especially upon seeing the horrible redesign of the characters in Deep Strange Journey back then.. but there's like hardly any information on him on either website aside from a brief synopsis of who he is and the games he used his art for. It's a mystery.
Prophet Man I disagree. With popularity comes casuals. With casuals comes simplification and mass audience appeal. SMT fills a niche and it clearly works for them and the fans. Let it stay that way. I already hear that SMTIV shows signs of casualization but I still have to play that game. Been busy with how freaking awesome P5 and DDS are.
ToastyPC well that's a little paradoxical considering the point of having a company is to maximize profit and having more people liking he franchise will give the company more revenue which isn't a bad thing. But casualization that seems extreme and a little far fetch since there are plenty of good title game series with a giant fan base that doesn't cater to casuals. I know what your trying to mean but popularity when it comes to a video game series will only give it more pros then cons
@@Scoreos77 Shhhhhh He's an smt fanboy, they don't listen to reason and logic I saw one that was bitching that the P5 Dancing games were getting more attention than SMT V lol
These guys look like straight up Yakuza gangsters. They really conjure up to the anarchistic and esoteric vibe that define the legacy of Megami Tensei. Great video, very well crafted.
Awesome video man great music and image choices. Lots of good info in this video nice to see some love for SMT, you had a really solid analysis especially of the art explaining his different styles between games
Now if only the didn't change the artwork of Strange Journey to appeal to a bigger audience granted 4, , Apcolipce, P3 through P5 have great art work but something just looks off about Deep Strange Journey's designs and I know old charicters can work in the new art style as the protagonists of SMT 1 through 3 looked great in that cameo dlc in Apcolipce but the charicters in Strange Journey look off for some reason especially the commander
Demi-Fiend of Time I don't think it's them really changing the art style from Kaneko's as much as it might seem off to have his art mixed with these new designs. I think they only made the remade character portraits to fit with art style of the rest of the new content. It's definitely sad, but it may have been harder for the artist try to redo the artwork in the way someone very unique like Kaneko did. I know they are doing several new portrait emotions with the old characters and it might have seemed just like a mixed up mess if they had tried to use both old and new artwork together. It's sad, but kind of just what has to happen to make the experience immersive and consistent
Ghost Murmur actually the new characters look fine to me it's Gore that looks messed up, the others look fine for the most part but gore just looks wrong
Were you aware of Maken X? I don't want this to come across as "HA, YOU THOUGHT" or some kind of snare/trap/gotcha. I just think that it's an important example of the missing link between Persona 2 and Shin Megami Tensei 3 as Atlus' experimental foray into 3D on the Dreamcast. It has its own unique take on the choices you typically make in Atlus RPGs, it is an Atlus R&D1 production as well. It's obscure, I don't think this video is any less informative to its own goals but I was curious if you guys did know about it or not. I still got much out of watching your video, so great work above all else!
Huh, well you make explicit mention about how his style transferred into "3 Dimensions", which is why I mentioned it since Maken X is a 3D game, not a 2D one. That doesn't quite make sense to me, but if that's how you feel.
Dude...I might sound stupid...but is there a reason as to why Kaneko is taking a back seat and not really making anything art related or new art? What happened to him?
Kaneko did worked on the design of dante's and vergil's devil trigger transformation for devil may cry 3 after all soooo i guess howard is in the right, but since we lack intel about that subject we can only imagine
His work on those games was just a collaboration effort between ATLUS and Capcom, where Kaneko designed for DMC while Dante appeared in the Maniax re-release of Nocturne
yeah, if i recall correctly it was because someone in atlus' team liked dmc 2's dante quite the irony seeing that dmc 2 is the weakest episode of the franchise
To follow up with this comment, I think he's already abandoned SMT for good and became a freelancer. Right now all he does is sparse work on book covers or just individual artwork unrelated to ATLUS.
I hate to be the one to say it, but I had to laugh out loud when you said that the series is soldiering on fine without Cozy or Kaneko. Sadly, they managed to completely derail the series in pretty much the first game done without the guidance of either of them. To me, even though the series name continues on, it is pretty much dead in spirit.
Yeah I mean look at it, Okada leaves and Kaneko hands the reigns over to some new guy (Soejims WHO?) and they release Persona 3. And we all know how horribly than sold.
Well geeze, we all know how sales = quality now don't we? Make no mistake, P3 is a good game (with its own notable flaws) but the modern Megaten games without Cozy's or Kaneko's design philosophy are vastly different, for better or worse.
I miss Kaneko. His art is really unique and he just dissappeared off the face of the Earth.

@@SylumSolosEverything he posted on Twitter last time in 2013 or so. I asked him where he went, and he started following me for some reason.

I'm the guy who runs the Kaneko account on twitter and I just wanna say that this is an amazing video. Thank you for making this
Kaneko's Art?Dude thanks for what you've been doing
His art is very hard to come by sometimes and it's great when someone compiles it
Is he still out in the flower fields?
This franchise needs more attention since it's truly more unique than FF and the Dragon Quest series
Prophet Man ikr

@Jay Santo the only thing dsj has that could be considered casualization is artstyle and difficulty

I think the progression of his artwork is very similar to Hirohiko Araki.
HumanoidCableDreads well they are friends
Satan The Arbiter for real
Satan The Arbiter That profile pic is not Kaneko approved!
I can see it for sure.
Huh, no wonder why I am so drawn to his artstyle.
Imagine what it is like if the their creations switched artstyle?
The black lips look is really cool
Excellent script I must say. Like and Fav.
Great stuff. I always like learning about artists.

Kaneko is like Araki for goth kids
Kaneko's Black Maria and Asherah = Big tiddy goth gf (??)
Man I love this channel!
Amazing video, and nice choices of music. Hope to see more from you.
Kaneko my lord and savior
Another great video!!!
Aw shit. I thought I was original when I came up with the "Year of Megami Tensei" name.
Joking aside, great stuff, well researched too. Keep it up.

Rtyuiope and I haven't played it, so maybe that's why we didn't include it. If I had known, I'd put it somewhere in the script though.
I knew of it's existence, however it can fit into the same evolution of art as Persona 2 Innocent Sin I just decided not to mention it.

Nope :c.
Don't own a Dreamcast, and there's no viable Dreamcast emulators yet.
Whats the music that plays towards the end? It's really good.
「Hikikotaku」 Unseen Vortex, its a prototype song used prominently during the making of documentary of Nocturne
I need to buy the ps2 games
Avant garde (guard, GARD), not grawday.
Yeah looking back on it, I dunno how I let this one slide lol. sometimes when you record at 4 in the morning you tend to mess up your words
Graday
Dude...I might sound stupid...but is there a reason as to why Kaneko is taking a back seat and not really making anything art related or new art? What happened to him?
I think he just became a freelancer... Though that's just my speculation. He makes art completely unrelated to ATLUS like book covers and stuff.

He is not in an active role anymore. He stepped down to let others take the spotlight.
Either that, or he is locked in down at Atlus' bunker.
