If you listen closely, you can hear a woman crying in the background in some parts but they cover it up with the music.. Much like (from what I know) how a victim in an abusive relationship tries to hide the abuse or justify it. It gives me the shivers.
Actually, the song is from the musical _Carousel_ and it was always supposed to be super tragic. But this is by far the best interpretation I've ever heard/seen!
Carousel. Some of the most beautiful haunting melodies ever, with the most maddening lyrics. This version is brilliant and turns the usual interpretation upside-down.
I was so surprised that it was Amanda singing here. It's so great to hear her voice in a higher key since she naturally sings in a low octave. She sang it so well!
Annie Clark sings the main section, Amanda sings the section that shows her singing in the video, the second verse or so. Then they sing together at the end. She can make her voice lovely and high, but the really high part is Annie.
Is it weird that the part of this video that bothers me most is the baked beans, sprinkles & marshmallows thing they appear to be having as a side dish?
Wow, that's all I can say. After being a massive fan of Amanda and loving her album, watching the entire "Who Killed Amanda Palmer" videos finally and ending with this is, wow.
I wasn't too crazy about this song when I heard it on the album. It sounded to me like it was saying "never question your lover; they're always right." Then I saw this, and it all makes sense. Amanda is so brilliant.
Woah. That's crazy. I had a sudden spark of inspiration for a play idea and thought that, for whatever reason, this version of this song and "Cruel" by St. Vincent would be perfect to help that inspiration grow. Then I look in the description and THE GIRL FROM ST. VINCENT IS ON THIS SONG. Craaaaazinessssss. I had no idea!
Yet another video that I have missed. This gave me goosebumps, the already outstanding vocals from Amanda and Annie mixed with this gorgeously treated cinematography is just delightful and dark. I really want jelly now, which is amusing and alarming. Well done to the art team and to the credibility of acting from Annie and Amanda, simple and stunning.
It is Amanda, you can tell just by how her voice sounds and the little cracks that make it unique. Annie does the back up vocals near the end of the song.
This video fills me with AFP love. I adore it's restraint, and the level of sexual tension between the two girls, but it retains that 1950's innocence right until the final image. Sheer genius!
I grew up with Carousel in the background. It was my mother's favorite musical. Problem is, the song is about a woman trying to justify being in an abusive relationship.
This song if from a Rogers and Hammerstein musical called Carousel. There are other nice songs in that musical and in their other musicals including The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, The King and I, and South Pacific.
Gah. This gives me so many feels! I am just crying all over the place (and laughing a little bit there at the end). I have so much love for Amanda Palmer. So, so much love.
i admire your telling everyone to stop over anylizing i spelt it wrong lol, the video its very interesting how you only think of this song as simply art i love that
David Lynch's 'Twin Peaks' + Peter Greenaway's 'The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover' + Rodgers & Hammerstein + St. Vincent + Micheal Pope + Amanda Fucking Palmer = EPIC FUCKING WIN. Five stars! Six! Bravo! BRAVO!
I'm an idiot. I watched the first minute thinking "oh is this a lesbian couple how cute I love vintage stuff to!" But then I was like "oh nevermind NEVERMIND!!!! THISIS SO MESSED UP!!!!" I WAS WROOOONNNNGGGG!!!
Meh, bi, lesbian, straight but curious, straight women who have sex with women, poly, Ace, etc. can all apply to the ladies depicted in this video. Still not limited to any such group to enjoy... Straight guy here & loving it!
Knoxville Girl, Where The Wild Roses Grow, The Willow Garden, and Widow's Grove are all songs about men murdering their wives/lovers, with no reason given. And those are just off the top of my head. It's been a pretty popular theme in music/poetry for hundreds of years, often referred to as "the murdered sweetheart" pattern. The nearest contemporary I can think of would be Henry Lee/Loving Henry, telling of a woman murdering a man over unrequited love. AFP's spin on this song is genius!
It's very subtle. I think you'd have to have surround sound speakers or some good quality stereo headphones cranked to hear it. I had to put my ear next to my speaker at full volume to pick up on it.

Amanda and Annie's voices sound so great together. It's like they are meant to sing together !
i love how they use sweets to emphasize "sugar-coating" abuse. Great job Amanda!
Wow. Ok, that video turned my perception of the song around. Somehow it is even better now.
Amazing...they took what has to be the most misogynistic song ive ever heard and turned it into a song of protest and independence. BRAVO!

How come whenever I make jelly it never comes out looking nearly as perfect as that?!
...or am I?! Mwahahahahaha!
+CocoaChupacabra HA! If you were your jelly would be perfect.
Ah, tis true!
CocoaChupacabra
jello
Jelly!
Is it weird that the part of this video that bothers me most is the baked beans, sprinkles & marshmallows thing they appear to be having as a side dish?
Nope. That's the most disturbing part for me as well. I almost gagged.
Wow, that's all I can say. After being a massive fan of Amanda and loving her album, watching the entire "Who Killed Amanda Palmer" videos finally and ending with this is, wow.

This video gives me a bit of a shiver. And the song.. everything.
It's in my head though.. it's been stuck there for a few days -_-
total babes kick ass video concept I love you Amanda!!! *insert lots of fan girl hugs and kisses here* OXOXOXOXXOXOXO

I fucking adored this song before the seeing the video.. Now I'm just in "Awe." I fucking love you Amanda !
Lovely. Reminds me of an old vinyl record and has a real charm to it.
"But what's the use of wond'rin'
If the ending will be sad?
He's your fella, and you love him
There's nothing more to say"
Beautiful
It is Amanda, you can tell just by how her voice sounds and the little cracks that make it unique. Annie does the back up vocals near the end of the song.
Wow, such class especially around 1:27 when Amanda steps out! What a style!
simply amazing
Amanda Palmer is the face of art =]
It brings together the song so well, and keeps a happy yet haunting tone.
I am in love!
This video fills me with AFP love. I adore it's restraint, and the level of sexual tension between the two girls, but it retains that 1950's innocence right until the final image. Sheer genius!
I grew up with Carousel in the background. It was my mother's favorite musical. Problem is, the song is about a woman trying to justify being in an abusive relationship.
same here, this video is like the redemption of the song, gotta love Amanda!!
Clear and concise. Would luv to have heard Linda Ronstadt sing this. Pure, powerful and very sad.
Oh this is perfect

thank you so much for this. really deep down.
this woman is the emboidement of pure, unflitered, AWESOME O-O
This gives me such a satisfaction at the end. This song rings true to me on so many levels...on my history with men....
This song if from a Rogers and Hammerstein musical called Carousel. There are other nice songs in that musical and in their other musicals including The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, The King and I, and South Pacific.
The message isn't very nice now is it?
It was originally meant to be a tragic song. _Carousel_ is a fairly dark musical.
i love amanda..so..much..
Beautiful song, beautifully performed and a beautiful video too. Or, in a word, beautiful!
Gah. This gives me so many feels! I am just crying all over the place (and laughing a little bit there at the end). I have so much love for Amanda Palmer. So, so much love.
Utterly brilliant. I can't wait to show my friends.
this is so fucking beautiful. simple AND beautiful.
i admire your telling everyone to stop over anylizing i spelt it wrong lol, the video its very interesting how you only think of this song as simply art i love that

Amazing.

David Lynch's 'Twin Peaks' + Peter Greenaway's 'The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover' + Rodgers & Hammerstein + St. Vincent + Micheal Pope + Amanda Fucking Palmer = EPIC FUCKING WIN. Five stars! Six! Bravo! BRAVO!
LOVE IT!
And the bit with Amanda breaking down was beautiful.
the ending is so "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover". A must watch. Cute video!!
Yes, I was totally thinking of that movie!
I like that she has someone to confide in.
Amazing!
FINALLY! Someone makes a video from "Who Killed Amanda Palmer?" worthy of Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
Do you guys hear the crying near the end ?
Yes, I do...
This video is brilliant. Great message. Love it.
She is PURE CLASS.
i like this version of the video much much better! love love love to Amanda!!
The ending is absolutely brilliant. Especially Amanda's face.

Amazing work. I'm not sure how I hadn't seen this version of the video until now though.
That was so lovely!
This is so amazingly beautiful.
I see what you're saying, story-wise it could've been clearer.
But I think visually it's very pleasing.
OOOh...i love them =)
really loved it the video is well good makes me understand the song a little more now ;)
AFP!!
Best vid so far, along with shores of california and coin-operated boy; but THIS is a masterpiece of sarcasm.
haha that sinister expression at the end
I'm an idiot. I watched the first minute thinking "oh is this a lesbian couple how cute I love vintage stuff to!" But then I was like "oh nevermind NEVERMIND!!!! THISIS SO MESSED UP!!!!" I WAS WROOOONNNNGGGG!!!
oh you weren't wrong They're Lesbians
yessssss this pleases my sadistic little lesbian heart
I still ship it
Meh, bi, lesbian, straight but curious, straight women who have sex with women, poly, Ace, etc. can all apply to the ladies depicted in this video.
Still not limited to any such group to enjoy... Straight guy here & loving it!
Doing this version of this song for a musical theater cabaret performance (since its from the musical carousel)
Great video!
Thanks for sharing :)
Sheer brilliance

...amanda palmer is the most amazing woman in the world...
Love it!
The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover.
All I'm Saying
OMG YES.
I still think about that film, and it's been more than a decade.
just sing :)) love that girl
Anyone else notice the quiet sobbing in the background?
The conceptual aspect really makes the video superior over the original
♥♥♥ it!
that was amazing.
Neil - don't you be messing with our Amanda now, OK?
Who is the other woman in this video. It doesn't look like Annie Clark to me. Looks more like Anne Hathaway.
Oh Hell yes.
This reminds me of "The Hours" plus "Diabolique."
Beautiful video!! And I love the song! :D
Haha, I love the rather morbid ending. :)
@gearpunk It's St. Vincent in the beginning, Amanda later ("something made him the way that he is...")
This is basically that one Courage the cowardly dog episode
Genius.
Amanda Palmer also sings in this video, not just Annie Clark.
Ha! This is great!
Wow that's really sick.
2:26 they sit down, then BAM a scene later they've changed chairs. Good old musical chairs :D
da best,
baked beans with marshmellows and spinkles seems legit
