Riven Introduction

- Includes the logo sequence, but not the part on riven.
The two movie files were joined with a software called "Movie Joiner". I tried to join the third part of the introduction, on Riven. However, it took much longer to do so, and after youtube had processed it, the video was playing twice as fast as the sound! I'm guessing it's because the video on Riven is encoded differently.
I'm told that Rand Miller was dissatisfied with his performance, and wished they had brought in a professional actor to play Atrus.
...Why?!
I feel like both Rand and Robyn give inconsistent and dodgy performances throughout the Myst series, but in Riven's case, Rand did extremely well as Atrus. I do wonder how many takes they did for his scenes though. He seems tired in the intro, but luckily for him, it plays into his character, since Atrus has been working for months on end keeping Riven alive anyway.
A good artist is often especially harsh on their own performance, to combat the bias humans naturally have for themselves. I think Rand Miller honestly does make a great Atrus; he's like the Atticus Finch of librarians, so heroic and paragon in such a mundane and non-action-y way. But there's no question that much as I like his performance, he gets outshined by John Keston playing Gehn in this installment. There's something to be said for a professional.
@@sheridanrathbun It fits his character to a tee... he's probably been up for multiple nights on end trying to repair the constant damage to Riven, just writing his ass off. He kills this bit of acting, and I think this is one of the most epic intros to any game, down pat. It still gives me chills to this day.
He was great
@@sheridanrathbun Who did Robyn play?
Without hyperbole, Riven is of higher quality than a lot of modern-day films.
Granted, modern-day films don't exactly set a high bar.
So good. The music just makes it. Robyn Miller really outdid himself with this soundtrack. And I don't know what the hell Rand was talking about, he WAS Atrus!
Questo Montisanto i agree. Music in the first two games, but expecially in riven, is just 50%of the heart of the setting. So unique and alien
Riven has one of the best soundtracks out of all the Myst games , imo
Given how cheesy 90's FMV voice acting tends to be, I really appreciate the performances for Riven. Not to say that they're like- Oscar-worthy or anything, but they have a strong air of professionalism, and the characters are played straight enough that it's easy to take the narrative and world seriously. It never comes off as corny or cheesy, which is a real accomplishment for a game like this.
The epic music helps alot with this too. Not to mention they did a good job matching the actors against the CGI backgrounds (this scene is the only one where the actor really stands out...probably because it looks like they used the old D'ni model from the original Myst).
@@Lava589 I found out like not long after this comment that the dude who plays Atrus is one of the creators of the series and not a professional actor which blows my mind a little.
@@regularshowman3208 Cyan, now Cyan Worlds, was a rather small company (and still is now) back then.
Granted, they did well selling Myst (which warranted Riven, and then spawned three more sequels). But, I imagine the budget wasn't that large... and honestly, they did well with the resources they had (and the game took four years, too). I can't imagine it to come out any different, and I think they all did well (Rand Miller, himself, acting worked for what it was needed for).
The atmosphere of this game is the pinnacle of adventure genre. Top notch music and sounds. Superb graphics and great story with brilliant puzzles. A masterpiece of masterpieces!
“I might be able to get you back to the place that you came from.”
Once that music hits and you see the distorted Age nonsense coming at you…scarier than any Resident Evil.
A pure masterpiece, lots of influence in the very best video game stories of the the past 30 years.
man i can't wait for the 3D remake
i think it might have been cancelled tbh
That would be lame if it was cancelled
@@utub1473 Apparently Cyan handed over the Starry Expense project and they are auditing every assets that has been created during those 10 years of development. It might take time, but this game might actually get in 3 to 5 years a good official remake. That's what i'm really couting on.
@@Rompodable handed it over to whom?
I realize this comment was 5 years ago, but did you see the remake of the Cyan intro that they just posted? I'm STILL so excited for the 3D remake
I cannot count how many times I watched this intro. My favorite intro out of all the games I have played. I remember that I would watch it each time before plunging into Riven even during my first playthrough. I always played with curtains down and the intro would set a perfect tone for trying to figure out what the hell to do next in the game.
Goosebumps every time I watch this. So cinematic, and the timing of the music and the tone of voice is all just perfect.
I hope that when 'The Starry Expanse' guys do this, they can duplicate it exactly!
+AndrossKenobi starry expanse?
It's a remake of riven in complete 3d and everything. Look it up.
This intro always gives me the chills. Great intro!
"Thank God you've returned. I need your help."
"Yeah, about that help thing. I'm kind of busy with work at the momen... "
"You get to piss about exploring a bunch of cool islands that have seemingly loads of sweet puzzles to solve, but in reality are all part one or two larger puzzles... which hopefully you'll find deeply satisfying when you begin to figure things out. You also get to meet my wife, if... erm... that's something you've been dying to do. Oh, and then there's my farther who... "
"You had me at piss!"
"Oh, great. Well if you could just sign your name and place your hand here, we can get this whole thing started!" :)
As my username suggests, I absolutely adore everything Riven. I grew up with it and it shaped me. I mourn for gaming in this age, as it will almost never recapture the same awe Riven did for me. Taking the tram between islands, pausing to observe the scarab on the fence post, figuring out an entire language structure and numeric system in the classroom. It's all lost on today's demographic...
I mean, not everyone, I'm playing riven for the first time. Its a shame the visuals have aged, as I think thats the main thing keeping more people from discovering it.
Try playing SOMA. This type of game is very much still alive
Don't worry. Creativity is always cyclical in society. There are spurts of innovation and then things deteoriarate for many years and a few decades later people get fed up with stale things and engage creativity and innovation again. In a few decades we'll have games that makes us dream again.
Boom! No slow intro, build up anything, with that first note the screen cuts to Atrus' prison and the game begins, such and incredible note to launch this masterpiece of a game!
Cutscene Ends. Game Begins. Get Trapped Immediately!!!
25 years later and we finally get to hear the first part of the music here in high quality!
Riven is just a masterpiece.
When Atreus shows you the linking book to Riven and opens it: If you slow down the video you can see Ghen's eyes in many frames before the Riven logo flies towards the screen
You can do this right on UA-cam by setting it to .25 speed. It’s absolutely terrifying.
He is writing in this intro because the Age of Riven is collapsing in on itself. He needs to keep writing in order to keep the Age stabilized long enough for the player to rescue Catherine.
When I first played it, I thought he just had to be constantly writing on his ages or they would be destroyed. It makes much more sense that it's specifically a problem with Riven.
Still the greatest game of all time
The scrambled image in the book is chilling, especially when you know the backstory of what waits on Age Five.
Still one of the best game openers of all time. Riven, as a study in ambience and atmosphere, was probably the strongest game of its time in that context. A lot of properties owe a debt of gratitude to what Cyan brought in Myst/Riven. (There were other great adventure games at the time, but nothing that came close to Cyan's aesthetic imo). EDIT: Like....even the opening logo with the music, come on.
this series should be taught in schools as a way to teach logic, persistence, and solidarity
Even more than that, it really has great parallels to colonization, ecological destruction, and treatment of indigenous people, and it was all done in a very non-preachy, stunningly introspective and well thought through narrative that really is so much show and so little tell.
Believe it or not our primary school teacher brought in myst 3 and our whole class played it together and our task was write about it and draw artwork of the different areas. Best year I ever had.
I would have loved to read the myst books for English
THANK GOODNESS IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THIS
But instead psycho sexist feminists deny boys in kindergarten the ability to play with legos because they want the females to develop faster than them
It's a shame that the beautifuls introductions with real characters were lost in the new version🤣🤣
The dialog script wording and delivery I feel are better here than the remake but still excited for it.
Best intro ever...best adventure ever....
wouldnt it be great if they made a acutally myst movie
Sounds like they’re trying again now. I don’t have high hopes, but it would be cool
Michael Gray really?
@d R yes
Cyan must be using some divine rendering/audio engine. They have an incredible ability to generate emotion I never knew I had.
Starry Expanse better not change this! They gotta include that iconic Cyan intro before the scene too!
Perfect music, perfect performance by Miller, and all-round brilliant sound design.
I know this comment's old, but I have to mention that my dream would absolutely be to convince Rand to go to one of those volumetric video capture studios and re-record this intro in a format that could be turned into a near-photorealistic animated 3D model (the way some VR demos and companies like Microsoft & Meta have done) and inserted into the virtual scene at the beginning of Starry Expanse in that form.
Sort of FMV for the next generation!
Sadly no FMV but the faceposing is pretty impressive.
I love how you’re told both nothing and everything. You could say that about all Cyan games I guess. This is how to tell a story properly. Not through endless mysteries or narration or tutorials.
Great intro. I vaguely remember playing Riven but I never finished it. RIP gg.
This is the best intro to any game I've seen
Atrus: Thank God you've returned.
Me, as a kid: This is my first game of this series. Who are you?
Some of my earliest memories involve sitting next to my dad while he played Myst, when I was only a couple years old. I was six when this came out and boy, was I excited!
The BEST of the BEST!!!!
I just started playing the remake, and this is what I miss the most - the environments in the new game are FANTASTIC and very true to the original, but the 3D models they use instead of actors… Just isn't the same.
They definitely should have stuck with this narrative on the new redone Riven. The game looks fantastic, but this was so much more dramatic.
I love the theme that plays when the camera zooms in on the linking image, as well as the theme to this whole intro. Too bad it isn't on the soundtrack.
I also am driven to wonder what the linking image would look like if Riven was undamaged.
Mazryonh Probably would have shown the main dome island with the spinning room since thats where the stranger lands! Wish we could see it!
Mazryonh not in the soundtrack?
I keep getting recommended ASMR roleplay videos that all just remind me of this scene. The OG ASMRtist, Atrus.
This original is way better than the current remake 😕
When I was 8 years old. This riven game makes me go to sleep.
There's an independent team working on it called Starry Expanse, not gonna be done for another couple years but they seem really committed and appreciative of the original game.

I loved Riven! It was the best of the Myst series as far as I'm concerned.
"theres also a chance i might be able to get you back to where you came from" is such a great line when you realise later in the game that The Stranger is most likely from Earth since the fissure leads back to earth, and The Stranger found the Myst book on the other side of the fissure.
When writing linking books, what happens if you run out of pages before you're done creating the book's world?
I have to say, playing the demo for the remake… something is lost. In this version, Atrus sounds lost. His love is missing, his father is the kidnapper, and Atrus is hoping and praying that his plan will work. You really get a sense that he’s winging this, and really isn’t confident it will work.
The remake though, it sounds like Atrus has everything all planned out perfectly and he’s just hanging out. Also, I dislike how they abandoned the concept of Atrus remaining in D’ni to keep writing in the Riven book. Like, the canon is that Gehn wrote things very coldly and clinically, and this caused his worlds to be very fragile and temperamental. Riven is one of those just hanging on by a thread, which is why Atrus has to keep writing to keep correcting everything going wrong with Riven.
Don’t get me wrong, the game is astoundingly beautiful, but I just feel by the intro that something is lost, and it is sticking with me after this superb intro from 1997.
ja good memories of 1997 was 15 then, game took me almost 2 years to complete had to figure everything out myself no internet where i was. the whole game was amazing it was years ahead of its time just look at those graphics, i would've like more interaction with the people on the island more story but can't complain, epic game!
For the future, Freemake, SUPER, and Quicktime (even the free Windows version) itself can all join videos almost flawlessly. For Quicktime, move the seekbar all the way to the end, then drag and drop the second video onto it. Then do the same for the third video, fourth video, etc. Trying to use File>Save will give you the "Upgrade to Pro!" message, however if you close Quicktime, it'll ask if you want to save or not. Press save and choose to save it as a self contained movie. Then press OK and volia, videos joined.
Rand Miller best actor
epic intro, right up there with the daggerfall intro.
Chills. Every time

Who's here from the teaser for the remake?
I hope this scene still has the same oomph when it becomes 3D, considering that I used to think that 3D Atrus looked a little like Hank Hill.
I wish they had shot this on film so it could be rebuilt, even if not 3d.
prachtige game

this & myst intro are the best
i wish i played this when it came out. what was it like then, like nothing before right?
The first Myst game was certainly revolutionary at the time. The graphics were pre-rendered, which allowed the game to look way better than what you'd expect from that era.
It blew my mind!
This was perfect
Riven isn't my favorite game in the series. But that's like saying that white chocolate is my least favorite form of chocolate: still amazing, but marginally less so.
Which installment WAS your favorite?
@@stephenskinner7207 I want to know too. I always took Riven as being the pinnacle of the series. Literally unmatched.
Best intro
so touching a book.. leaves it behind but what about the belongings of the player.. wouldn't that deattach when crossing over like when they hold the book in hand
Everything on the person is brought with them except for the book they’re linking through

"I need your hyalp!"
i was born in 1997 :D
oooooh, interesting!
i wanted to hear the discussion with the Riven Native. D'ni has such a cool language!
squarefan80 i think the native that comes up to the stranger is Moiety not Dni. Ghen is Dni, Atrus is half Dni and human, and Catherine is Moiety.
Some of the Moiety sided with Ghen (like the one who takes the book) but others rebelled under Catherine who they worshipped as their messiah in a terrorist cult who refused to worship Ghen and the wharks in the temple.
@@8polyglot The native is trying to speak D'ni at first, though. He switches to Rivenese when he gets frustrated, but at the beginning he assumes that the stranger speaks D'ni and tries to communicate using what Ghen taught him.
No big deal, but the Moiety itself is the terrorist cult. Everybody else on RIven is just "Rivenese".
which soundtrack track is that opening?
:P
It's a good thing this game is on Steam now
