《舞千年》通过全新的综艺形式使观众更深刻地感受中国传统舞蹈的独特魅力，以及其中所蕴含的真挚情怀，让观众感受中国古典舞蹈的审美和文化价值的同时，关注中国古典舞蹈深厚的历史积淀。
节目聚焦于以舞蹈讲述中国故事。荐舞官化身历史人物，穿越中国历史上四大最具代表性的文化盛世，只为找寻古今最美乐舞，载入舞籍《十二风舞志》，共论中国舞蹈之美！
《舞千年》设置了一个故事背景：相传有一本神书《十二风舞志》，记载了中华历史长河里最优美的舞蹈。可随着人们沉迷于物质、贪婪和战争，那些美的东西逐渐被忽略，《十二风舞志》里的文字也渐渐消失。时间来到2021年，五位舞者受到感召而集合，化身荐舞官，目的就是重新找回那些最美的舞蹈，“上下‘舞’千年”的故事就此展开。《舞千年》的节目编排突破了传统舞台的形式，它不限舞种，没有赛制，没有晋级，没有淘汰，没有现场点评，让演员尽情展现舞蹈的“刚柔并济，谦和包容”。节目以剧情演绎舞蹈背后的故事，先设置主线剧情，进而引入舞蹈，打造一种介于影视剧与综艺节目之间的特殊形式。每一段舞蹈又搭配一个小故事，融合影视手法展现，舞蹈与故事之间串成一幕幕情景舞剧，让舞者置身于实景的历史故事中，更像是影视化了的舞剧。
