  • The male prostitute who became a saint. St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, who along with his mother St. Monica, are celebrated on the 15th of June, has a very distinct, special, unique and very instructive life for us Christians.
Saint Augustine, protector of children and the youth, is one of the few saints who wrote their own biography. Therefore, Saint Augustine, which was called Aurelius before he was baptized a Christian Orthodox, wrote his biography and recorded everything that he lived during his youth and adolescence, without hiding the slightest thing.
He was born on November 13th, 354 AC, in Tagasti, Numidia, present-day Algeria, in North Africa. His father was called Patrikios, he was a pagan, but he was baptized a Christian shortly before his death and his mother was called Monica (Saint Monica) and she was a Christian. St. Augustine was one of the greatest philosophers of all time.
Saint Augustine followed the life of his father, who as a young man that he was it was more appealing to him. But God's plan and love for his creature did not leave him. His turbulent and full of various experiences life, activated his mother's sense of anguish for the salvation of his soul, which daily knelt down and prayed to the merciful God in order to enlighten her son and change his way of life.
Patience and perseverance were present in her daily prayer along with many tears that St. Monica shed and this was a great factor that God acted towards his creature. It is no coincidence that St. Augustine was named "Son of Tears" after his mother's daily tears for 17 whole years.
Saint Augustine and his mother, Saint Monica, nowadays have a lot to teach us, St. Augustine to young people and children on and St. Monica to parents.
Today, if someone who happens to be prostitute, really wants to change, then he/she can become a saint. It is enough to change the way of thinking, to repent, but also to change the way of his life. If someone today wants to find truth, joy and happiness of life, then he doesn’t have to look in the wrong direction like St. Augustine used to do, but only to seek and asks for it and then the Truth, joy and happiness that are all embodied in Christ, will be revealed to him, as was revealed for St. Augustine.
