There is an alternative to colonoscopy. Colonoscopy is an invasive procedure that entails some risks. If you have low risk history of cancer, you may want to consider an alternative which I was not aware of. And it's because it was only approved by FDA in 2014, 5 years ago. It's called Cologuard, the subject matter of this video. Check with your doctor.

Life is laden with risks where we choose the best alternative. Thank you, my friend, for this informative video, I’m happy to see you’re in good health. I have many scars, I’ve been operated many times, I’ve had a heart attack, high blood pressure and suffered with gout much of my life. My first colonoscopy was performed in my 50’s where they discovered, removed and analyzed several polyps that came back negative. Five years later they removed several more that came back negative. Again, five years later they found two with negative results. A few months ago, I was clean with no polyps. The first time my wife underwent a colonoscopy in her 50’s they discovered cancerous polyps requiring colon resection. Had either of us waited we both certainly would have expired at an early age. We are doing well in our 70’s. We love your videos.

I appreciate your taking on this topic because our doctors have no motive to tell us seniors about color guard since they are under the gun by HMOs, hospitals, etc., to use their facilities, services and equipment that Medicare or Medicaid pay a lot of money for. Check your bills. I have had colonoscopy twice already and I have no untoward symptoms so now that I heard of color guard from you, I will tell my doctor to shove it. LOL. I'm really scared of not waking up. My dad was an anesthesiologist and he had to be heavily insured because anything can happen to a patient when put in the twilight zone. Thank you again. BTW, I'm like you, I have been spending most of the year back in our native land and having a good life and not missing anything after having raised 5 kids through post grad in the US. We do deserve a break from our sacrifices. Plus, Seniors get a preferential treatment at our motherland more than in our adopted land. There you go. No worries, Be happy.

I’m one of those people that develops polyps so every 5 years I have to get it done, those that have no polyps general get them every 10 years. There is also a test that you can get testing your feces which is just fine for those people with no risk factors.

GO GET THE GENETIC TESTING FOR FAP!!! ASAP. I have that, and you more than likely do as well. FAP affects more than just the intestines. It also affects your eyes, and a few other things.

I have seen this on TV also! Being 63 and refusing the colonoscopy so far this will be a great alternative. Next time I see my doctor I am going to mention it. I feel that area of my body is a exit only, as many of us probably do! :-) Thanks for the information!

Nothing wrong with Cologuard. It is the patient's choice. I like colonoscopy. It is better because they can see any lesion, be it a polyp or anything cancerous and can take care of it right there and there and the final diagnosis you will know in 24 hours ( that is if the hospital or clinic Pathologists are not busy Pathologists, it may take longer. Every invasive procedure has potential risk.

Had my second colonoscopy and had several polyps removed. All without incidence. I agree that while every invasive procedure has risk, that risk is small and can save your life.

Very informative and very helpful. I had my colonoscopy done in my early 50's and again in my early 60's. Both came out negative (thanks God)! I'm now in my late 60's and I don't intend nor plan to see a colonoscopy specialist. It certainly will help to just resort to this Cologuard should I be asked for another colonoscopy test by my primary physician.
There's one curious thing that I noticed that you never mentioned despite the fact that there are two reasons you said why you don't want to go for a colonoscopy test. One of which is its invasiveness. Looks like I missed your second reason for not doing so.

I have had 2 colonoscopies without anesthesia,,,unpleasant but bearable,,,,I was able to see on the monitor as the Dr. insertedthe camera and removed the polyps....The big problem with the anesthsia is they require you to have someone drive you home.

Bad title. This is a good start though not necessarily the best. A precursor to it all is to find out if you have the genetic disorder FAP. If you have FAP then you need to go straight to the colonoscopy!!! I had signs of colon issues in my mid 30's, but was ignored by my doctors. Nobody would consider doing a colonoscopy till I was over 50. Then they finally did one once over 50. But then it was too late for me. I was almost totally blocked with polyps from one end to the other in my colon! And it was cancer. Had I been listened to by the docs and they did one in my mid 30s, I could have saved the colon more than likely. I have had 95% removed already. But now I must have the rest removed, and more. I'll be with a bag the rest of my life with the next operation.

Thank you for your comment. That’s helpful. For those who don’t know what FAP means, it is familial adenomatous polyposis, which is an inherited disorder characterized by cancer of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. People with the classic type of familial adenomatous polyposis may begin to develop multiple noncancerous (benign) growths (polyps) in the colon as early as their teenage years.

@@battlecreekpiper3533 Be sure you know the woman well. It's true that because you're a foreigner, you could always be looked upon as someone with deep pocket. Remember, Philippines is a poor country. There are, indeed, many of those -- but not all. If someone marries you for true love, you will never go wrong because a Filipina wife will take good care of you and they are loyal. Understand the culture though. They say that when you marry a woman in the Philippines, you are getting married to the whole family. Make sure that the woman is not TOO close to family to a fault. Wishing you luck.

There are several methods of colon cancer screening, but the invasive one you discuss is simply the "gold standard" of screenings. No other procedure is as comprehensive as a visual inspection of your colon. If polyps are present, they can be easily removed during the procedure. I just completed my second colonoscopy and had a couple polyps removed, without any complication. Contrary to what you described as being "anesthesized," most people are not. They are simply taken to a very sleepy state (call it unconsious if you will) but it is NOT general anesthesia. My best friend growing up died of colon cancer at the age of 53. My advice is that if you are at risk for colon cancer and can avail of the service via insurance, do not be deterred because you might feel it is too embarrasing. If you use one of the non-invasive techniques as an alternative and the results indicate something, you will likely be getting the colonoscopy anyway! Better to be safe than sorry.

The poop on a stick method surveys your stool for traces of blood, which may indicate you have something going on inside your colon. If you come positive, like with Colorguard, you would then need a colonoscopy anyway.
