  • Easy fast spreader conveyor replacement. Using drill with belt and pulley to thread chain onto spreader. Do not run unit to accomplish. Very little disassembly using this method. This was done without spreader being operable or mounted to vehicle. Plow Truck Salter. Very similar to SaltDogg, Down Easter, Meyer, BOSS, BUYERS, Snow ex, Snoway, Chapin, Hotshot, pro caster, broadcast spreader.

You couldn't take a link out?

Yes, we could have taken a link out. I decided to replace the conveyor because the original one was over ten years old and worn out. Lots of slop side to side and did not fit well anymore in the drivers.

How tight do you want the conveyor to be when finished?

Look underneath and make sure the conveyor chain is not dragging or hitting the bottom of spreader. I would say 2 or less inches of slack hanging underneath. Keep clean and lubricated, it will last longer. Chain will stretch when new.

      1. Periodically check the conveyor chain tension.
The spreader should be out of the vehicle. To
check the tension, measure in 20"-24" from the
rear edge of the sills. Push up on the chain with
your hand. The conveyor chain should lift up
1"-3" off the conveyor chain guide.
      2. If the slack is greater than 3", loosen the two
bearing mounting bolts on each side of the
conveyor idler roller on cab end of hopper.
      3. Loosen the jam nut on one of the take-up bolts,
then tighten (clockwise) the take-up bolt one full
revolution. Repeat evenly on the other side.

Wouldn't it be easier to just start?

It probably would be easier to start and run the unit. Although I’m not sure how safe it would be? We didn’t start the unit because we hadn’t installed on the truck yet. All the controls are installed on the truck.
