This takes me back when I was turned on to jazz. Me and my Les Paul ...I thought I could do anything. I love playing this kind of slow easy jazz. My imagination takes me to a quiet bar in midtown Mahattan, playin' with some other musicians and fallin' in love with the lady in a long black evening dress, sipping bubbly with her between sets, making our own music. Maybe some Lou Rawls to go with it. I gotta get back into it!

In the U.S.A music market, "Smooth Jazz" is more than a description: it's a "genre" unto itself. Mainstream players like Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson, and Bill Evans come out of a tradition that sees "smooth jazz" as elevator music, dance music, or mood music rather than improvisational art worth serious listening. Keith Jarrett formed his "Standards Trio" to counter the notion that he was a "smooth jazz" player. He wanted to prove that, like the greats before him, he could play the standards of Cole Porter, Gershwin and Ellington. Nothing against smooth jazz. But that's simply the way the music is marketed and sold. George Winston, Kenny G, and Yanni are examples of Smooth Jazz artists--a whole different approach and style from Mainstream Jazz players like Monty Alexander, Chick Corea, and Michel Petrucciani.

Hiya, I really like this kind of jazz. Just a bass, piano and drums. I don't like brass when I work and want to listen to something in the background. For what should I look in terms of more classical combos? Like from the 40s or something? Would highly appreciate any tips :)
This is great! Love this style of jazz here. Finally a simple piano, bass, and drums trio. They're surprisingly difficult to come across without any brass added to the mix.
I used to play a bass fiddle in an orchestra many years ago, when I was young. I was a goof off and never kept it up. The bass in this clip really gets to me. I also was attracted by the graphic. JB2wheeler

Hiya, I really like this kind of jazz. Just a bass, piano and drums. I don't like brass when I work and want to listen to something in the background. For what should I look in terms of more classical combos? Like from the 40s or something? Would highly appreciate any tips :)

This is great! Love this style of jazz here. Finally a simple piano, bass, and drums trio. They're surprisingly difficult to come across without any brass added to the mix.
