our vehicles have to be road worthy in UK but our roads do not have to be vehicle worthy 🤬
Ain't that the truth! We drive on the left. Now we drive on what's left.
Good point!
I see this comment everywhere and all I do is read it and sit and nod 😂😂
I watch from here in the northeast USA where our winters are tougher on roads. Your roads look pretty nice. When I was there, 20 years ago, your roads were quite nice (I'm overdue for a visit)
@@townsend7 They've deteriorated badly in recent years ☹️
I've just sold my beautiful Velocity moto XSR900 and down to just one bike now. Somehow, it feels good not to worry about MOT, tax and insurance on a bike that I did less than a 1000 miles a year on.
Turning 60 made me realise the tours, holidays and riding experiences are all more important than material 'stuff'.
I always think ‘have I got too many bikes’ come MOT time. I then soon forget come summer 😂
Exactly!
I did offload a couple of bikes in 2022 just because thanks to putting them off road during Covid, all their rego’s and a couple of insurances came up at the same time and the bill was horrifying. If they were still spaced through the year I’d probably have another couple of bikes lol
Hi, we have same problem ,i have 5 bikes and my wife has 3 , open the garage and make excuses why we should keep them, there still here !!! keep on riding !!
Tricky one isn’t it!
Good Morning Andy TMF. NB: For everyone in the UK. FYI: If your motorcycle (or any other vehicle) fails an MOT you can have it re-tested for free, if within 10 days of the fail.
Really? I never knew that....
NB for everyone in the uk FYI, martinigooda is only telling you half the truth, if you leave a vehicle with the MOT tester for repairs and it’s retested within 10 working days there is no retest fee, if you take the vehicle way for repair and return the mot tester can/will charge a retest fee.
If you drive a unroadworthy vehicle away from the mot tester have a accident and seriously injure someone, your going to be very careful about bending over in the showers to pick up your soap for the next few years.
Morning Andy, Here in BC Canada, the equivalent to an MOT was abolished back in the 70's. There was an emissions test for a while a decade or two ago, now abolished.
The law still requires any vehicle to be road worthy. Vehicle insurance is mandatory through ICBC a Govt. Crown Corporation. If a vehicle has an accident ICBC can and often do inspect it.
The Dept. of Transport does actually do road side checks occasionally. I haven't seen them in the city. I live on an Island and they show up a couple of times a year. with a few getting caught. When they are on the ferry, the drums beat and most people park their Island car until you hear the all clear.
If you get pulled over the police usually give you a warning and a few days to show up with it fixed. Or if its more serious issue a you a ticket. If its a real clunker they just impound it. You may have noticed brake checks and scales for commercial vehicles when you were passing through.
Sounds like a sensible system to me!
You can take your bike upto a month in advance of the expiry date and still keep the same start date. I always manage to go on a dry day with all my bikes and look forward to visit the garage, see the guys, have a chat and give them some business.
I must have been living under a rock. I had no idea you could sign up for MOT reminders. TMF - public service broadcasting at its best!
Cool!
Me too, signed up the car and bike. Latter isn’t due until 2025 as it’s a 22 plate but it’s nice to know I will be reminded come next spring.
I didn’t know either! My life just got easier!
There’s an app called know your car I have all our cars and bike on let’s you know when mot is due tax and can check on the insurance database if your vehicle is insured
Thanks for mention of the MOT reminders - didn’t know that service exists! Set it up really easily - very useful
Glad it was helpful!
I had something similar, both bikes and my truck were in need of oil changes on the same weekend! I only had a 10 qt container, so had to go recycle the oil after two and then do the the last change. 😊
It is still called the Ministry of Transportation here in Ontario, Canada. Previously vehicles, we tested every other year for emissions only. Several years ago, the provincial government did away with emission testing on light-duty passenger vehicles, including motorcycles. We also no longer pay for the annual license plate tag.
Roadworthiness or certification is completed when a vehicle changes ownership.
This year I went from 3 bikes to 5. A month ago warm and dry conditions let me ride 4 bikes in one day. I hadn't picked the 5th one up from the dealer yet. The neighbors must think I'm daffy. Lol. Most of them only own cars and are more into grandbabies as a hobby. My own sister is one of these and could care less about the 2 wheeled way of life. Hard to believe we both had the same parents. In this respect, I'm the black sheep of the family. LOL.!!! 👍👍5🏍🙋♂️
The cons of owning several motorcycles is the cost of registration once a year. (an arm & a leg.) The pros : When I called to add my 6th motorcycle to the collection the insurance company actually sent me a check.
Your MOT place reminds me of where I used to get mine done. An older chap in a workshop that's been there forever. Eventually the new houses got closer and closer until it was demolished and flats built in it's place. These places are precious and disappearing fast.
Yes when Nigel packs up I'm in trouble!
I really enjoyed this video on a snowy March day here in Michigan. A week ago, it was 65 degrees F, and I spent 4 hours out on a grand tour on my Speed Triple. Michigan's weather has been so up and down this winter-yuck. I've just one bike, but it is my pride and joy (other than my guitars).
Sounds good to me Scott....
Congrats !! .. nice chatty, easy watching !! I live in Spain (Costa blanca) and the ITV over here (equivelent to MOT) is tbe first one when the bike is four years old .. and from then on, every to years (for motorbikes) ... Look forward to the next video (or livestream !! ) 😉👏👏
Nice bikes and all that but love the Robert Cray music. Just don't hear enough Robert or Buddy Guy these days, so that made me really happy! Cheers Mr. Flyer.
Great stuff as ever. I’d definitely advocate aiming for a service and MOT on the same day - really makes sense even with less bikes than you have in your collection. If anything fails on an MOT it’s still usually one trip as opposed to three otherwise. Multiply that by however many vehicles you own…. Love the sound of that Enfield! Hope you enjoyed the rest of the day!
Yes I defo need to get servicing and MOTs synched up…..
Great video Andy and I absolutely love the Royal Enfield, I love the look of it and the colours and the sound, it’s perfect.
Thanks 👍
Awesome! Thats an impressive amount of beautiful bikes 👍 I only have 1 now, Yamaha Super Tenere 750. 5 years ago I had five, Triumph Speed Triple, Husaberg FC600, Husqvarna CR430, Monark M400 and a Yamaha Wildstar 1600. Too many to service and maintain 😉
Yes I’m coming to that conclusion…
Nice relaxing episode, TMF. In Japan, bikes (over 250cc) and cars are inspected after 3 years from new, and then every 2 years after that. It seems like a slightly more complicated, thorough, and time consuming system than the MOT. They're fairly strict with regards to modifications. Some people keep stock exhausts and refit them just for the inspection. Your mandatory liability insurance is included. You can save money by doing it yourself, but then you have to take time off work if you work weekdays. The car and bike dealerships make a killing, as most people get them to take care of it for them. It varies, but the cost is somewhere about 50,000 yen for bikes and about 80,000 for small cars. That's about 260 and 415 pounds respectively. Not cheap, and that's one of the reasons why 250s and smaller are very popular. You can do whatever you like to them, and no inspection.
It can be a right pain, when there a few bikes to get through. To reduce the hassle, I have a mix of bikes some over 40 years old, so no mot or tax required on the older ones 😄
Here in California there are no required inspections for motorcycles. I like the idea, though, of an MOT -- it would help independent shops stay in business. I think, though, it should be every two years; once each year seems excessive.
In Australia it varies from state to state. In Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia you only need a road worthy if the vehicle changes hands, however in NSW and the ACT you need one every year to renew your rego..
Hi Andy, Here in Australia (NSW), we also have to have our bikes checked annually. I have 2 bikes, a classic 84 Honda Magna vf750 and a Reid 29er mountain bike, I use both for fun and commuting, and with just two, it is difficult to choose .
Good morning TMF and friends.
Good morning!
Every day is a learning day, not aware of the MOT reminder facility, got three vehicles to manage, unfortunately not all bikes. Cheers Andy, it’s the little things that matter 😊
Very handy that reminder!
The EU tried to force the same system onto membercountries. Denmark said no, due to lack of evidence that it actually prevents accidents. So we only "MOT" when changing ownership. Good system. Thank you mr Flyer!
Victoria Australia, the same Roadworthy Certificate only when changing ownership plus we get insurance coverage for people as part of our annual registration costs, you can choose whether you insure the bike or other people’s property damage……
We may not have that issue in our garage but we all feel that twinge deciding what one bike to buy 😎
Just love your Interceptor, I have the 19' red/black one that I have made my own. Great little bike. Next to my BMW RT and KLR650. Cheers all!
Ministry of Transport screams Monty Python to me. A high-stepping, agitated Cleese seems about right. 😂
🍻🍻🍻
Or even a bloody annoying Marty Feldman 😅
You can get an MOT up to a month before it is due so you could do a bike a week in the run up to their due date.
Very true Sporty but then that wouldn’t make such a entertaining video.
I've got my first Pink Slip (MOT in Oz) on my Bullet 500 coming up in June, as it is five years old. I remember watching the Custom 650 vids when I got the Bullet, now I've put 14500kms on it since '22. It needs a new rear tyre, Dunlop K70, but there's a shortage here. Nail biting if it gets off the ship before the inspection is due. There's probably statutory wriggle room, or put something else on it. Costly though. All will be well.
great vlog, love the sound of the speed twin
Glad you enjoyed it - me too!
GREAT NEWS !!! just added HONDA 250 F (new) to my garage. Now I have ROADGLIDE ULTRA 114, Hayabusa, HERITAGE CLASSIC (103 engine) V STROM 1000 and my YAMAHA Quad 700 and I keeping them all, little tough fit in a two car garage, but I can handle it, only 68. GREAT VIDEO"S !!!
So nice to look out over a couple of dials rather than a TFT! Retro bikes mirror an age when a motorcycle was just a motorcycle and you did everything on it. It. Which may well at a deeper level explain their appeal? The plethora of different styles these days in my opinion owes as much to the marketing men than anything else. Not that I'm complaining, the choice now is phenomenal we are very lucky but it does contribute to the 'multi bike owning dilemma' that judging by the comments many of us are in the lucky position of having to experience.
Yes - a great “problem” to have!
I thoroughly enjoy your videos, Andy. Please keep them coming. Oh, and your Japan series was, in my opinion, the best travel series yet. Over here in India, we don't have an MOT equivalent, at least not every year, but we do need a "Pollution Under Control" certification every six months. I own an 850 GSA for the highway / adventuring bits, a dirt bike that doesn't have to be road legal that I keep permanently at the enduro park I'm a member of, and my favourite, a 2013 Bonneville T100. Like you on your RE or Speed Twin, I don't churn out a lot of miles on it, but it's always guaranteed to bring a smile to my face, and I'll never sell it if I can possibly help it.
Sounds good to me Pav!
I personally found even 3 bikes hard work for MOTs and servicing. With a car as well. I found 2 bikes to be the sweet spot.
Yes I think you may be right - I just can’t bear to part with any though!
About right my 23 Yr old fazer and 6yr old mt09 tracer does me.
Yes but if its a choice of extending the house or garage guess my choice.
Don’t have your problem. I have 3 bikes (2009 Triumph America, 2017 Triumph Thunderbird Storm, and 2017 Harley Road King). Have two of them listed on Facebook marketplace. Hoping to only sell one of them.
Just for info, here in Belgium a technical test (MOT equivalent) only needs to be done when selling a motorcycle or after an accident repair. Previously it wasn't even needed when selling (not sure about after an accident repair).
Hey Andy, In Pennsylvania, USA, we have annual state inspection of all on-road operated motor vehicles. Cars and light trucks also get an emissions test but only if you reside in certain counties. While some feel it is an unnecessary hassle, I appreciate having another set of eyes checking them over to ensure they are operating as expected.
Yes it does make sense doesn’t it….
When you’re concerned about the number of motorcycles you have, always remember this formula; The proper number is always what you presently have in the garage…..plus one🏍️ ! 😆👍
March time it's the annual TMF MOT vid 😂 really enjoyed that Andy nice relaxing little vid sir 👍
Thanks 👍
Over here in Northern Ireland our MOT is carried out in government test centres , though over the last few years the difficulty has been getting appointments with long wait times , but all said and done I think ours is a better system .
In Sweden we have to do a MOT every 2 years. But, we cannot realistically ride here in the winter months because of ice and snow. Especially where I stay, about 60 miles (UK) North of Stockholm.
I am hoping to get on my bikes in a week or so, but currently it's minus 2 with ice on the road.
Unless I want summer teeth.
Some'er here and some'er there.
Especially when hitting ice mid-corner...
Hello TMF I do remember the MOT drama on my vehicles while living the UK such a pain if they find something which needs fixing I would also do the repairs myself when I could. Now living in oz our state of Victoria don’t need an annual inspection. When purchase new or used you have a roadworthy inspection which then allows you to register your vehicle and that’s it just service and maintain it correctly while you own the vehicle. Hopefully it never changes pay your rego each year and you are legal happy days 😊
Sounds sensible
Does the rego still involve some kind of insurance aswell?
Lovely to see the magnificent green Interceptor again and the sound ìs great. As a GoldStar owner of exactly 1 year i hope you can add it to your stable. So many compare it to the Interceptor which in my opinion is ridiculous because its a single and therefore it should only be compared with another single. I did try an Interceptor and thought it was great but there's just something about a big thumper and it's character that won me over.
I do like like the triumph
Sounds like a garage extension or a small industrial unit is needed 😊
Always love to see that Enfield Andy it’s a stunner.
Cheers Andy - I always love to ride it!
Here in the US, each state has its own inspection requirements. 13 states do not require an inspection at all. My bikes currently are registered for number plate in NY, it's $42 per bike, for May 1 to April 30. The inspection check is $6, per bike, and its just a basic safety check of lights, turn signals, horn, and brake lights., abd exhaust loudness. They take your mileage as well. This is good for 1 year from date of inspection. Good news is, if you ride in other states and your inspection has expired, those jurisdictions can't enforce another states inspections.
Great Vid.. was waiting for the Kawi..
Next time. Have the same SE Love it…
Me too!
You can do an MOT a calendar month early and retain the same annual expiry date. So dont have to do them all on the same day.
As an expat living in Melbourne Australia i am glad we don't have MOT tests here. Only when you buy a 2nd hand vehicle do you need a RWC (roadworthy cert) then as long as you own the vehicle whether its 1 year or forever you never need to get it checked again. Responsibility lies with the owner to keep it roadworthy although like anywhere else really you can be stopped by police & a defect notice issued. Much better system in my opinion
Having seen what people bring in for a MOT and expect it to pass and get a nasty shock when it doesn’t I would rather have the test weeding out these bikes and cars. The test is pretty basic and covers general roadworthy checks which at least means that the vehicle has working brakes and lights etc. once a year.
In the Philippines the annual roadworthy test is effectively confined to a exhaust smoke-test. Given that the jeepneys (used mainly as local buses) are notorious for belching clouds of black diesel-smoke and having various bits attached with baling wire (or not there at all!), with bald tyres, no lights and very dubious brakes, the 'test' is rudimentary at best!
I thought three bikes in my garage was enough but I have just found myself adding a Triumph 400x scrambler so now have four to look after!
Interesting you mention the BSA Goldstar Andy, I saw The Hairy Bikers riding BSAs on series currently on TV, and the bike looks and sounds like amazing
Three bikes inspected in one day with no issues! Pretty good!
Just got the mot reminder thanks andy 👍
I saw your model Kawa on the seafront in Deal on Sunday. It looks even better than in the piccies. It needs to be kept for aesthetic reasons alone. Thanks for the vid. I traded my MoT-able bike in for a new one due to the hassle. X 6, no thanks!
Morning Andy, I'm sure your bikes will all pass 🤞 my XJR MOT Friday 🙈 I've only got 2 but do all my own mechanics 🔧hope it stays dry to scrub them new tyres in 🌞 love the videos and safe riding X 4 👍😃🏍⛽️
Fingers crossed!
Here in the U.S., each state determines how motorcycles are inspected. Some states require annual inspections, some not at all. Also, are you a rider, a collector, or both? I’m both, and don’t mind having a couple bikes that simply provide great “garage viewing” and get ridden occasionally. Motorcycles are kinetic art!
Here in the states when I was much younger, I never got a motorcycle endorsement, or had a bike inspected but times have/are changing here. As for all your bikes, I'd be happy to just have one good bike and a good safe place not in the the city to ride it. I look back and I've been fortunate to not have a serious accident. Riding in the city became a real chore because one has to constantly be on the defensive, it wears you out. It gets to the point that it's no fun anymore.
Sorry to hear that…..
Are the roads worthy? That’s the question Andy. Well done on the record.
Nah they aren't!
Great little video, and lucky to get all 3 bikes out on a dry day haha. Great to see your SpeedTwin out too, probably my favourite bike at the moment. Looking forward to seeing/hearing your review of the BSA if it happens as may be looking at that, or a Royal Enfield, as my Tiger is getting a bit too much for me at the moment.
Thanks 👍
“I absolutely love this bike” It needs to be on a T shirt Mr Flyer ❤
Andy in the States we have what is called an aim inspection witch is an emissions check ✅
Interesting vid. MOT's are a bit of a faff & while from the outside looking in, having multiple bikes looks great, it's expensive & can be a chore to keep them all in good condition & legal etc. Although as you mentioned, it's a problem in the barest sense of the word. : )
Totally agree!
Here in the Atlanta, GA area, we don't have any testing for bikes but, cares more than 3 model years old need an emissions test each year. The cost just went up to $25.
Sounds reasonable!
That small print at the beginning is brilliant 😅
Well spotted :0)
You never said how many mi/km the trips were to Nigel’s place. Sounds like it’s a good little ride!
No bike MoT in France either. Cars have it, it's called contrôle technique.
Here in Victoria, Australia we don't have a mot or equivalent. Obviously you do need to keep your bike roadworthy but the only time you have to have a roadworthy inspection is if you are buying a secondhand motorcycle and want it registered. 😀
I consider your Speed Twin and Kawasaki in the same category but as you know they are totally different riding experiences. I'm in a similar situation with my Thruxton R and Z900RS SE now and previously with my BMW R9T and Thruxton R and love the similarities and celebrate the differences.
Yes - completely different rides….
What a beautiful bike your Royal Enfield is.
Thank you….
Could use the MOT here in the states, some of the 'vehicles ' you see on the road!😮
Just had my confirmation from Japan that my GPZ900 R (which underwent a complete rebuild in the mid 90s and so got re-registered then) is indeed 40 years old - officially! No more MOT 😂
Cool!
In Ontario, Canada, only on purchase . So if you sell or buy one, you need to pass a test. I had a 79 Honda CM400a about 8 years ago passed. My 82 Honda CB750SC Nighthawk,(5 years ago needed a light lense fixed. After the first test, you are good unless you sell.
So glad I live in California USA after seeing this, I grumble about the bi-annual smog checks on cars/light trucks---safety compliance is totally voluntary Darwin-style. About the only things motos have to worry about is too much noise.
Thanks for sharing
Only ever had one bike at a time apart from when I did Trials riding.
Hi Andy. I case you see this comment and to make you aware . I have a Z900RS, bit older than yours and I managed to twist the ignition key unlocking the fuel cap as the key doesn’t go all the way in + bit heavy handed, which meant it wouldn’t turn in the ignition barrel and of course couldn’t start the bike. Ended up dealer straightening it. Wanted to let you know so you can hopefully avoid the same problem.
All the best. Stu
Thanks for the heads up Stu - I shall be cautious!
In Czech Republic you go for the 1st "technical inspection" after 6years from 1st registration (new bike) and then you repeat every 4 years (as my fellow countryman mentioned in one of the below comments). This is in place since the covid crazyness. Before it used to be 1st at 4years and then every 2 years (just like cars).. I couldn´t believe that the govt actually done something right, but this one is truly an exceptionaly great idea and it has been medialized with a spot on explanation: "That total majority of bikers are caring well about their bikes, so we don´t need to make them queue at the technical inspection sites so often". We have specially certified and equipped places for it. You need to fit all the OEM or at least CE certified aftermarket parts to pass tho :) Or you can bribe them :)
Sounds good to me!
Don’t forget the cars too. I have 4 bikes and soon to be 6 that will all need MOTs and 3 cars. It’s a bit of a pain. Luckily most are spaced out over the year.
Tell me about it - 3 cars, 6 bikes and a caravan!!!
@@TheMissendenFlyer you win on the Top Trumps, I don’t have a caravan! 😂😂
I remember mot ing a Moto Morini Corsaro back in 2015. Rode away 400m accelerated when on top of a drain cover and high sided. Wrote it off. 😂
Oops!
Hi Andy, I know your pain! I have 3 bikes, 2 cars and a Van 🙂MOTs, servicing and so on becomes a full time job!
Tell me about it
We don't have the little Suzuki here, but that looks like it would be a blast to ride on the twisties.
It is....
Holy Moly the Enfield is gorgeous
Great video young man,thank you.😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Me personally would say get the bike serviced and MOT in the winter. More likely to not have to wait weeks for a slot to have the work done.
Fair point!
I got all my bike MOT’s moved to June and the cars to September helps in managing it all, seems a faff to me and my MOT station is only a mile down the road 😂
Stateside, Ohio, no tests or special certs for motorcycles, other than yearly tags.
Lovely colours on the Royal Enfield.
Thanks - I love 'em!
Stagger your MOTs. You could have delayed a month on one or 2 of them!
Your MOT guy is very thorough, I've never seen one so enthusiastic. Great video.
Very nice bikes and obviously well cared for. It must be a difficult decision for you to which one needs to go but myself, I would be keeping the Royal Enfield and the Kawasaki. 🙂
Hi forgotten how great the Enfield looks 👍
Yes lovely aint she!
Never had to do a retest. Usually if i get them to sort it out theres no need.
Wonderful looking bike the Speed Twin. I've just fitted the Triumph mid controls kit on the Speedmaster. It's a nice kit and it saves about 10kgs in weight as the forward control brackets are all made of steel. The mounting brackets on the kit are aluminium, so a huge weight saving over the original. I am also preferring the new riding position too...
How’s the peg scraping Graham?
@@TheMissendenFlyer I'll have to let you know on that one Andy when I have had the chance to ride it more. Here's hoping for some better riding weather...
Amen to that mate!
Same problem here just bought a 5th bike, fortunately only 3 need MOT's but 2 due this month.
Not really a problem is it!
Amazing getting the RE through in Spain it would have gone to the scrapyard. You need type approval for a parts fitted. 😂
RE should take note and do a 650 Scrambler in similar spec, although if XT coming and similarly retro reborns it will be a busy sector.
I took my BMW s1000r to the main dealer for an MOT yesterday and I must admit.. it’s like going to the dentist, you never know what they are going to find, 450 pounds later and a advisory of a new rear disc .+ £280 😩.. still only one bike in my garage .. I don’t think I could take the stress of owning more bikes 😂. Great vid !! 👊
Cheers Kev!
We have an annual inspection process here in New Hampshire (US). It’s not very expensive and doesn’t take long…not quite sure why there isn’t some sort of sliding scheduling. If the bike or car is brand new, I don’t understand having an annual inspection…feels like every couple years is more logical, until it reaches an age it needs an annual checkup. Great to see you out riding your bikes tho, safe travels and looking forward to nicer weather!
Here (Sweden) it’s no inspection until the bike is 4 years old and every other year after that. It’s quite cheap. Only issue is to find an inspection place that does bikes as not everyone is trained/licensed to do it.
With cars it’s no inspection for the first couple of years and then a yearly deal. Quite a comprehensive test so I don’t mind it.
@@903lew In the UK if the car or bike is new then its first MOT on the 3 year anniversary. Then yearly after that.
@@903lew I have a Swedish bike, Norden, wish our rules had more of your logic...maybe someday!
We have plenty of places to do the inspection due to number of small businesses willing to take on this quick transaction.
@@davidwood974 Not Swedish but rather Austrian these days. Not a bad thing, just the way of the world. A very nice piece of kit!
