When my husband painted our front door in our first house it drove him mad. He would leave it open for as long as he could however when wee needed to close it in the night though it had dried it wasnt cured and kept taking a strip of paint off down the side. In the end we researched and found if you put greese proof paper down the side while it is curing it prevents it sticking and it worked :). You did a great job of the door, lovely colour! 😊

Good job! I use wire wool with paint stripper and use a razer blade to remove any dried paint on the glass. If it's smooth glass, a razer blade will take if off effortlessly. A tip for preventing paint from sticking is to put some wax or WD40 onto it where it will touch.
Much of UA-cam tries to tell you how to do DIY instantly and without effort. This video tells the truth - DIY is damn hard work, and takes a long time. But equally, that effort is worth it when you get results like this. Well done Vikkie

Lots of work and that wet paint color is shockingly pink. So glad it darkened to that beautiful color. I have 2 doors that need painting, now I need to find the motivation you have shown in this video. Thanks for posting.

I used Water-based for my railings, purchased by accident thinking it was oil based. It was going on a shocking bright jade but dried in a dark green. Phew! I had to give it 2 top coats over my dark grey undercoat so I wasn't impressed with it at the time. 3 years later those railings are still rock solid. It's done a better job than previous oil based which is very surprising.
That color turned out gorgeous considering what it looked like initially. That door has a lot of character.

Have just purchased a carbide scraper after watching this videoto remove several layers of paint and crap on my stairs. A heat gun and the scraper worked wonders.
Nice job indeed, my taste is to bring back that old door to it's original glory. But I guess I'm more of a Traditional person...keep up the good work....
If it didn't have so much damage, I would have been inclined. It would have driven me crazy doing all the hard work to find a coloured filler didn't blend in at all.
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK here's a tip from an old carpenter. If you can get this product in the UK its a product called Aqua Coat, it's a clear wood filler. Take your electric sander to the door after it's been sanded down to the bare wood and then sand a few seconds to the bare wood then take that sawdust from that sanding and mix it with the clear wood filler and you'll have a perfect match wood filler.....

Great vid! I can highly recommend using filler spreaders as opposed to a traditional type.
More accurate and leaves less excess on the surrounding woodwork to sand off.

Just to say you can clean the paint off the glass with a very sharp /new Stanley blade on its side 45degree angle but lightly and don't go in line with the blade but square 90 degree to the direction of the blade like if you were shaving lol 😅👍.

Looks good. Like new. I had to do this to my front door because of rot. Had to cut an inch and a half off bottom. Replace it. And fill and stain it to match.
How did you attach a piece to the bottom?
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK took the door off. Cut it off with a circular saw. Glued and screwed a length of 44x44 to the bottom....sand and stain.
I was lucky to be able to match the stain. As the door must be 20 year old

Wow didn’t know there’s so much planning and preemptive thinking for a paint job. Love the content as always and another fantastic job. Would there be any benefit in making a video about different types of paints and primers on different surfaces? I’d be interested in watching that.
I was thinking the same thing regarding different swatches! I'm going to do a couple of basic white vs grey swatches for a blogpost about this which I'm currently writing :)
One tip with Doors that I would pass on is .... a couple of wooden wedges!
Put them in under the door from opposite directions so they put pressure upwards the depth of the door rather than one edge ;0)
Personally I like oil based paint ... but then I am old school ;0) ...... so Dulux is out for me too!
If you want a glass smooth finish rollers are the way on flat surfaces, but if you want a woodgrain effect brushes are the tool for you. Again prep is essential with modern paints so spending time on that shows in the end! My Grandad was a painter and decorator at Hope Hospital and was known for having perfectly paint free overalls .... unfortunately I missed out on his genes, if you are like me a sheet of plastic is a godsend!
Many paints darken on drying, ...... your color choice was a good one ;0)

Hi, carbide scrapers are designed to be pushed and not pulled. I know it feels more natural to drag them but they work much better in a pushing motion. I hope that helps on future projects.

I've stripped varnish from similar internal doors ... a laborious task.
That scraper seemed to do a good job.
It certainly wasn't the quickest jobs from start to finish 😂 The scraper makes varnish so much easier to remove, but lots of paint layers... no!
Love the scraper. Could do with buying some new blades though. Still using the original one.
Good job but use mohair roller sleeve for water based paints..fiam rollers usually leave stippling,bubbling orange peel effect with water based paint..

That filler you used to fill the holes, could I use that on stairs?
I would of thought oil took longer to cure than water based. Always have issues with oil based paints getting marred and marked
Zibra brushes are the best for painting woodwork.
Interesting... I don't think they're available in the UK.
Water based paints are easier to clean up and don't have the odour of oil based paints which is why I tend to favour it instead of oil based. Also have noticed the discolouration in oil based paints even from decent makes of paint.
Interesting about the discolouration! I've only noticed it with white turning yellow. It's so annoying!
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK must admit do notice it more with white paint. But must woodwork etc at home I do white. But is still annoying when things start to look yellow a few weeks after painting them
What ....... scraper did you use to start ?
how did you clean the doors from the residual dust before the primer
Scrubbed with pink stuff thoroughly... took ages, then washed again with soapy water and left to dry.
Cuprinol 2 part filler gives you 30 minutes working time if you need longer working time, Ronseal & everbuild go off in 5 minutes.
