    Great video but I have to agree and disagree. As an audio engineer and anyone who deals with audio on the regular basis. I would rather deal with a dry signal than a signal full of room noise. I can always EQ audio without adding artifacts. Lastly NEVER be afraid to crank an EQ or any of your tools all the way. you just have to do it as a Parallel Signal and mix it in to taste.

    K, so I truly appreciate this channel. Moved into this cool old house in the woods in Northern Cali, owner was a music producer in the 70s and had the Grateful Dead's sound engineer design the entire lower floor. Got a huge studio, an engineering room and also moveable walls to create a small acoustically treated space as needed. It's pretty dope. Working on a project now that we have everything cleaned up and ready to go, and the info I've gotten from your channel has been so helpful! You deserve more subs than you've got. Don't give up, keep putting these videos out! The algorithm will catch up eventually 😊

    In your situation and use of your studio, I can see your point.
    As a freelance independent producer, my Alctron type eyeball is just another tool I use that works well for certain projects. I use presets that are honed to work with my room treatment, mic and read. Subject matter often is the deciding factor.
    Sometimes live and bright doesn’t work with subject matter. Clarity, yes, and great sound dynamics, but to attain a certain feel my Alctron does a fine job.
    I can see your point of view though for how you approach your work and I agree with you in that regard.

    My observation, as an engineer who has recorded Top 10 hits in a multitude of hotels rooms touring around the world: In critically listening to the Kaotica audio, it's not cutting the high frequency crispiness as it is adding significant low end frequency boost. He compares this to the mic by itself WITHOUT a pop filter. (Pop filters reduce hi freq response also) I think the Kaotica audio eq'ed with a low shelf cut can go a long way to produce highly usable audio. The most significant culprit in recording pop vocals is background room reflections that really come into play when you start compressing vocals to get that "front of the speaker" pop sound in mixing. The Kaotica audio is not perfect, but any engineer with enough experience and confidence to eq the audio according to their "objective ears" and not to "what manuals, books and recommendations" say you "should" do, can use the audio on a major release. What you "should" do is what your trained ears tell you to (with eq). That being said, I do prefer treating the recording space (as I would with comforters, blankets, sofa cushions, etc..) to minimize vocals projected onto bare walls and minimizing this room noise finding its way back to the mic. In a chaotic sounding room, I can see this thing saving the day (with additional room treatment).

      Not trying to be mean, but your comment screams "I didn't actually watch the video and just wanted to make a know it all comment"... This video is for voice actors specifically. Not pop vocals or any type of vocals for music. I make that very clear if you had watched the video and really retained the information. The rules for voice actors are VEEERRRYYYY different than for musicians going into a studio to have their vocals recorded (or even home recording) I stand by everything I said in this video because it was for voice actors. I've worked in this industry for years. These are the industry standards. All the top engineers, voice actors, agents and coaches all agree across the board on this. Now, if this were a video about pop vocals and top 10's, you'd have a point.

If you need a cleaner recording quality but don't have the money to (or just don't want foam and whatnot all over your walls), couch cushions/pillows and thick blankets shaped into a "fort" is gonna sound much, much better than a plain room with lots of reflections.

      @JamesYounger  8 місяців тому

      @@soniksource Yeah I mean, I don't "feel" this way it's just factual ya know? Surrounding a mic that closely with anything ruins the mechanics of the way it was made. The audio will either get muffled, boomy, muddy or a mix of them. For voice over it's a no go. For other things like vocals it can be used but you will have to do more with EQ and other processing on the back end to recover what they eyeball did to the audio. The perspective I gave was one that I NEVER see anyone else give. In order to actually hear what they eyeball is doing to the audio it needs to be in a controlled environment like this. Just saying "Oh look! The eyeball took down the reverb" is only scratching the surface. Ya gotta dig deeper to get to what's actually going on.

I'm looking for more of a mobile solution right now and was originally looking into something along the lines of a Kaotica Eyeball as a temporary measure when I came across your video, so thanks for talking me out of that haha. I mean, unfortunately nothing you surround your microphone with that's as close as all of these things are will give you the greatest sounding audio, however the ISOVOX is a bit bigger and as long as you don't cram the mic in the back of the thing it will help. Pull the mic as far out as you can to get better results. Look up James Arnold Taylor @jatactor. @@JamesYounger I've got a Halo and it's decent. Doesn't jam up behind the mic as much - you've got an adjustable amount of space (several inches at least) - and it's also _slightly_ reflective itself so while you don't get the often-phasey slapback from the walls of your room you also aren't getting the fierce HF attenuation that comes with a straight-up foam wrap.
      The bigger thing about it is due to the shape it gives you some protection from the reflections off a ceiling, which in most home studios are notoriously hard to treat properly (and are almost always gypsum drywall, and almost always too darn low).

    This does just as good a job at comparing the difference as the other "ridiculous" comparisons you mentioned while standing in your bathtub. The eyeball isn't meant to be used in ALREADY TREATED rooms. It's meant as a cheap alternative when you can't afford to completely sound treat your space or if you don't have the freedom to do so for other reason. Brightness in vocals can be easily brought up with EQ and other plugins. All you're doing with this video is shaming people for trying to get a budget friendly set up.

    I finally got the Rode NT1, per your recommendation and man! It's a beautiful sound. A huge step up from my MXL 770 that I started out with. The one thing that I noticed, is that the MXL peaked alot in the higher frequency range, creating more harsher Sss, Ps, and T sounds which had more sibilance. Since the Rode NT1 has more of a flat frequency response (and doesn't peak much in the higher frequency range) it sounds much more smooth. It has a nice warmth to it which is great for my smoky, husky voice. I can't stop raving about RØDE.

    I disagree, this is a matter of application and preference.. in my opinion without, the audio was almost too bright/airy and with was closer to a finished product after compression, EQ and Dessing.. Maybe for voice acting this applies but with music I would much prefer to start with the warmer eyeball audio and minimize processing within the DAW although your voice sounded great without it or any instruments.. Also my u87 picks up a lot of my modestly treated room.

    • @MyToasterIsMoist
      @MyToasterIsMoist 10 місяців тому +1

      Gotta disagree completely with your disagreement of his..agreement...yeah that made sense!
      Without the Kaotica on, his 103 sounded like what a mic SHOULD sound like pre-processing: raw. You don't want a *finished sounding recording* to start with because if something needs to be adjusted or changed, it's significantly more of a pain in the ass to try and work with vs something un-processed. Harder to paint a wall when it's already got multiple coats of paint on it.
      Regardless of whether or not you're working in the field of music OR voice acting, you wanna start with a raw, uncolored signal (mic pre's aside of course). And if the source is too bright, there's nothing stopping you from slapping on a lowpass filter/DeEsser, or working in some subtractive/dynamic EQ. All of which are moves that are almost always made in the vocal mixing stage regardless.
      With the Kaotica on, it's making EQ moves prior to the recording being sent to your mic pre's/interface/DAW. EQ moves that are much easier to add in as opposed to trying to remove. It's smothering the top end and significantly accentuating the low midrange due to how small the Kaotica is - sound waves need time/space to dissipate effectively, so with the Kaotica on you're essentially cramming your mic into a foam pocket with no room to breathe. That's why it sounds the way it does, even smaller vocal booth's can sound muffled and boxy.
      -and uh, not to flop my own wiener around but I'm saying this as an audio engineer who works both in the field of music AND voice acting for a living. I'll take a vocal without the Kaotica ANY day vs with it, and I HAVE worked with people who use em. Besides, if you reeeeally want a Kaotica/foam butthole, just snag a $40 knockoff from Amazon, it's the same shit.

      Did you even watch the video? It literally says AT THE BEGINING OF THE VIDEO "Absolutely no processing was done to the audio during the examples..." This is when I think Botts are commenting on the video... 🤦‍♂ 99% of voice actors aren't going to be editing their own audio. They will be sending it off to an engineer to edit. If you want to be a voice actor and have the (I don't want to spend the money on treating my space) attitude, you won't make it as a voice actor. The engineer you're sending your audio off to also has a VERY tight deadline just like everyone else down the line. The will throw out your audio and just go with a voice actor who has great audio in a millisecond. They don't have time for hobbyists. They have to move really quickly and if you get in the way of moving quickly they will just make sure to never use you again. In case you didn't know from watching the video (which it seems very clear you didn't) this video is for voice actors...

      @JamesYounger  8 місяців тому

      This could absolutely be the case but it's much easier to explain by saying "listen to the highs disappear" because even if what you're saying is the case (and it may very well be) it's still being perceived by everyone that the highs have diminished. It's just like EQ. Sometimes if you want to add a little high end to the voice you can actually just take a little low - low mids away and the ear will actually perceive more high end in the audio. Great observation.

My job is to consult them on how to properly acoustically treat their closet so it sounds dead, but not muffled, as well as many other issues that you can avoid if you know how to properly acoustically treat a space. • @anthonymele4847
    @anthonymele4847 Рік тому

    EQ you brought up is an obvious mistake. The reason why the Kaotica is reducing your highs is because your highs are no longer bouncing around the room. So the obvious answer would not be to boost the highs but to boost the highs on the reverbs EQ. Which leads us to the problem with these things which is the problem with all acoustic foam products. They're doing nothing to your lows, very little to your mids, and killing you highs. Killing highs is fine as long as your killing most of the rest of the spectrum. Then you just add reverb. Problem is when it's just part of the spectrum things get wonky. I can possibly see this helping with vocalists whose voices or particular mixes are aided by big low roll offs. For male voiceover work you usually are not going to want to do a big low rolloff.

    • @JamesYounger
      @JamesYounger  11 місяців тому

      Getting closer to the eyeball wouldn't change the fact that the eyeball is suffocating the mic. And of course you did, that's normal with any mic unless it has a omni polar pattern. I actually made it as fair as possible, I was at the same distance with the eyeball on and off. Getting closer to the eyeball (mic) causes what's know as the proximity effect, which increases the bass response in the audio causing muddiness. So for example, if I had gotten closer to the eyeball like you suggested, the audio would not only sound muffled like it does, but it would have also ended up more muddy sounding. Long story short, if you're a voice actor and want a career, don't use one of these. If you're a rapper or singer or UA-camr go right ahead because in those circumstances you are your own audio engineer and you're responsible for the final sonic quality of the audio.

This it succeeds at, and you can't test that in a treated room as you're essentially stacking sound absorption on top of each other in a way that completely kills the frequency response. You have no idea what your talking about ..Because all your doing IS TALKING..The Ball is used when Tracking into a busy multitrack of frequencies and Harmonics competing for a mono or stereo field ..Inevitably Vocals are the last to go on recording..so You have to turn the mic pre up Hot ..it will grab way too much white noise ..the Ball is a very valuable tool for this reason..Because ISO Booth is a headache process if your trying to hit " Play Record " by yourself Run to a booth ..and be on que ..it is just not happening ...it's a game changer for the Home studio enthusiasts and Big studios alike ..It's not made to sit around to hear yourself jaber about shit ..it's made for Hot mic's and squeezing into a multitrack on top vocals without hiss or room reverb!! without spending a fortune on acoustic tile sets that cost 10× the amount for a eyeBall !

    Wait. But you put the Kaotica over the eyeball IN a treated space. Of course it's going to sound like that. Lol!! Some people don't live in spaces that they can treat. Not even their closets. So, these serve a purpose. EQ is a thing for a reason.
    Next topic. Lol!

      It cost me a total of $137 to acoustically treat my closet (which is what most voice actors do) and this is actually less than the cost of the eyeball. It's not about money, it's about the degradation of the audio. Not to mention the top bookers, agents, studios, experts in the industry all agree across the board, DON'T USE THEM. So, you're not just disagreeing with me, you're disagreeing with an entire industry of professionals. Music is a totally different world than voice over.
