    If you wear an undershirt like I do, tuck the undershirt into your underwear, then tuck your dress shirt into your pants like you normally would. This trick makes a noticeable difference. I picked it up from an Art of Manliness article awhile back.

    I saw your video and purchased the shirt garter right away, a few days before my wedding. The ones on Amazon look inferior to the one you recommended. I tried it on for the first time the day of the wedding and it felt great immediately. While I could still feel it all day, I knew it was doing its job, and I never touched my shirt or tucked it in once during the whole day. I am super happy with the product. Thanks!

    Not sure why there is so much hate on this video. I ordered these shirt garters from KK&Jay 2 weeks ago after watching this video and they're AWESOME! Just wore them for the first time to a funeral tonight. They're unbelievably comfortable and they WORK! My shirt still looks fresh as hell. Honestly I can't stress enough how comfortable these are. You totally forget you're even wearing them. Once again, thanks to Jose for pointing me in the right direction

    How visible would short garders be when seated? I like a slim fit with my dress pants and the fact that you could probably see them is a huge turn off for me when seated.
    On a side note, higher socks and longer dress shirts tend to prevent them from sagging/coming untucked for me. Adding an extra 4-5 cm to my custom shirts is just as easy imo.

    I fully agree with shirt garters. I use them almost daily and they're a life saver. There are a few downsides to them: 1. The tab that connects to the sock can come disengaged if you vary your movements from sitting to standing/moving. 2. The quality of socks can also affect how much you notice them. 3. Going to the bathroom. You do get used to this but if you're going number 2 you have to disengage, at minimum, the tab that attaches to your sock. You can still go number one without having to undo any tabs.
    All that being said, the pros outweigh the cons, imo. There's almost no other single way to give yourself a semi-tailored, clean look that lasts all day. I'd recommend getting replacement tabs in case one comes loose and you lose it. I had a fantastic customer service experience with KK&Jay.

    We used to wear those each time we put our chucks or bravos in the Marines. They work good they get at bit of getting used to though. Sometimes if you the them too much you will feel the shirt pull at your shoulders and after awhile your shoulders start to strain. But they work.

    • @latetotheparty7551
      @latetotheparty7551 8 років тому +6

      I'll just add my two cents as well. Going without a belt/belt loop is awesome. It saves you from having to coordinate said belt with your shoes. A well fitting pair of trousers won't need a belt to stay up. Personally, I prefer side tab adjusters on mine as they're quite sufficient and it gives you a more streamlined look as opposed to a belt.
      That being said, it comes down to personal preference as a matching belt/shoes combo can be a nice way to frame yourself and it's more of the norm versus going belt-less.

    • @BenGenio
      @BenGenio 8 років тому +16

      A belt is really a sign that the trousers that you are wearing are not made to your size. In other words, they are off the rack. Belts became popular when the clothing industry started mass producing clothes and had to come up with the standardized sizes we know today. Before that time, most clothes were made to measure, so a belt was not needed (they used other methods). From an aesthetic point of view, a belt is a horizontal line that visually cuts you in half and clashes with the vertical line made by a tie. Vertical lines are important to help guide the eye from the head to the shoes, the two extremes that we pay most attention to. Hope this helps to answer your question.

    • @epixellate
      @epixellate 8 років тому +10

      +BenGenio yeah, but today we live in a world past three industrial revolution.
      talking about how it worked in past won't help.
      you have to see for how things are in present and adapt to that.
      and today a belt only makes you look better and not other way round.

    • @BenGenio
      @BenGenio 8 років тому +8

      Piyush Mantri Matter of taste. To me a belt doesn't make me look better. Understanding the past (especially in an old industry such as textile and clothing), helps me understand the present. I watch TMF because they aim to teach the "Why" of men styling, not only the "How to". Understanding where something comes from is a big part of understanding the "Why". Hope this helps.

  • @BarracksSi
    @BarracksSi 8 років тому

    Like roadrash76 mentioned, these are pretty standard in the Marine Corps for the service uniform. I wore them so often, I'm like you now -- I'm more uncomfortable without them because I'm always trying to get the shirt tucked back in.
    The "shirt stays" I use are a different design than what you have in the video. They have four straps, two per side, and they'd wrap around the leg, crossing behind the knee. The straps from the back of the shirt go across the front of the thigh to the inside, under the knee, and clip to the outboard side of the sock; the straps at the front of the shirt go around the outside of the thigh, under the knee, and clip to the sock somewhere on the inboard side.
    This way, they stay close to the leg all the time, whether standing or sitting. You won't see mine against the fabric going down the back or side of my trousers, and they don't pull at the interior angle of my knees while sitting.
    Looking back at my time in the Corps, it's a little funny how we trained to be the best in both killing people and dressing like a gentleman. I've got boxes of shirt stays, collar stays, tie clasps, and cufflinks, and I can iron almost anything.

      1. Why are you paying $450 for a shirt?
      2. Is the shirt made of paper?
      3. The shirt stays should not be that tight....

    LOL I already had these thought of them myself.
    The BAD: shows through ur pants around the knees when you are walking and sitting.
    I recently switched to ones that sit tight on your quads and those are amazing
    in addition you can buy these on amazon for half the price.

    Such an American resolution. Us Europeans do what our ancestors did when they dressed up: just grab the lowest edge of your shirt - all way around - and fold it firmly inside. Then you pull it down and close your pants. Even better if you use a belt, but it's not necessary. This way your shirt will stay tucked in forever.

    • @michaelrobertson1878

      Could you explain this technique more? Very interested in it

    • @HatovimLeTayis
      @HatovimLeTayis 8 років тому +3

      +Michael Robertson By folding the bottom edge of your shirt inside, you create a layer which won't rub inside your pants. Plus before folding its edge, you can pull your shirt as tight downwards as you want. Your shirt will look flawless around your body, instead of crease.

    You hit the nail on the head. Garters only work with dress shirts and socks... what if it comes to a time where you want to wear no shows with dress pants and a dress shirt? Is there an alternative to that ? Or are we stuck with a muffin top billowing out ?

      There are some tricks and tips that will reduce the ballooning effect, however none will be as effective as shirt garters. Some tips are:
      1) where slimmer shirts
      2) The military tuck
      3) tuck your shirt into your underwear
      4) wear high rise trousers
      5) wear suspenders

      I have also found shirts with higher armholes tend to stay a bit more tucked in as your arms have much more room to move

      You can buy some that has a loop at the end instead of clips for the socks. You loop your foot through it and it sits around the arch of your foot. These are the ones I prefer, you can wear any shirt and any socks. I used these when I was active duty Marine and had to wear service uniforms to certain places. Works exactly the same.

    I wear shirt guarders or shirt stays 5 days a week. They wonderful and work great. One con is that if you have hairy legs it will pull the hairs off every now and then, not painful though.

    Will the clips not ruin your shirts/socks over time in the place where they attach? It seems you are stretching the material when the clip is pulled up in order to lock the clips securely. Please let me know. Thank you.
