Nice! Joran and Oscar colab! Joran is such a nice dude, I bought a DIY module from him (might have been my first ever), screwed something up without realising, contacted Joranalogue, he paid for it to be shipped to him (from Germany to Belgium), found the fault (backwards LED 🤦), _fixed_ the fault, shipped it back to me and asked for _nothing_ in return! Legend!

A default empty DAW template is my worst nightmare lol. A cableless Eurorack case is where all my creativity comes from as I have no idea in advance what I’ll be coming up with.

That part when you guys created a kick drum from scratch was probably the first time I was able to understand modular synthesis and follow what was going on.
The visual representation of the routing was very helpful!
Great stuff!! Would love to see more like this!
Maybe you could even do a complete modular synthesis tutorial for begginers? I'd love to see that!
I'm all for making modular less intimidating :D

Part of me would love to! But it's so niche, and so technical, and so expensive to get into, that I doubt I'll really commit to modular stuff :) Though I'll still foray into it for fun every now and then!

Sounds like a perfect use case for vcv rack. [Audible wink]

That was probably the most convoluted way in euro rack to create a kick, but it was very cool as well. Didn't know creating a kick out of a delay would actually work. Thanks for what you do!

Sounds purer, more complex and less samey than just digital, those subtle nuances to me gives the sound so much more depth. Impressive stuff thanks for sharing

This is exactly the modular video I wished for. Thanks for making all this follow up questions and the flowchart, really helped me understand what was going on.
My suggestion today is “BAYKER & GHEIST - Howl”. Have a great weekend everyone!

Great video, and a worthy subject to explore. I’m my humble opinion Jouranalogue is manufacturing modern classics in terms of his modules: extremely high quality and fantastic design that speaks to the flexibility of modular. Lovely to see an interview of him.

modular is so cool, i love the tactility of it, and being able to use modules in many different ways is one of the best parts. i’ve been working on a sequencer module lately and one of the things i’ve had in mind for it is using it with an oscillator to make a sort of wavetable at an eighth of the frequency.

Modular was once all there was of synthesis. Not on this level, of course but until the arrival of the Mini Moog all the champions of electronic music were studio bound researchers. There is still the image of the modular user as an experimenter, a "Boffin" and having tried to make music in a live situation with a lot of interconnections I will testify to the problems of moving inter connected systems. The headaches with complex analogue systems led directly to the robustness and self contained reliability og digital instruments. Personally, it was an evolutionary step and I have no desire to go back to ground loops, tape noise, distortion and mysterious drop out and crackling from faulty cables and bad connections😉

We honour the legacy of modular, but analogue synthesis has evolved as well! For us, nothing comes close to the tangibility and sound of a high-quality modular system, but making music is of course a highly personal pursuit.

At some point I was interested in modular, it seemed like a cool interesting way to interact with synthesis. I borrowed a small modular system from a friend, tried that for a week, and decided for myself that it doesn't fit my workflow. I found myself just hitting record and jamming sounds, that were quite odd and didn't really fit the music I was making at the moment.
For that price it was quite limited, and I understood that I can be more efficient in-the-box.
When I feel that I want to play modular synth, I usually fire up VCV Rack or Cardinal to play around with virtual wires, but it happens one-two times per year :D

Le modulaire, c’est un peu comme une pratique méditative. Ça fait du bien de s’immerger pendant des heures. C’est plus interessant à faire qu’à écouter malheureusement. Merci pour tes vidéos ! ❤

Yes. Next question? 😁 I got so fed up creating the same tracks over and over… couldn’t get out of my own head. And needed space away from the computer I I=use all day. Then I discovered modular, along with an Mpc. Creative sound and rhythm and sequencing on the fly.

That he didnt drop names was a lie, less people invest in modular, its nice to have but not practical if you compare it to other gear. And its not direct if you catch an musical creative impulse and have to patch 40 cables and its gone. For sound design this is cool stuff but not for „direct“ music making

@@OscarUnderdog yeah and dropping "big names" isnt just for marketing purpouse, right?after using your channel with 262 000 followers to spread information
since modular is just a niche and most companys are little and die after a while
Its just a part of this whole youtube gear selling business that has nothing to do with making music
