Got a Stagg 57&58. Got a Shure 58. Vocal the Shure is best Got the Stagg only for miking up. Price to value the Stagg 57 works for me. Nice video. Cheers.
More in the treble? I literally pulled the plug and went from one to the other. Normalised in post. The weird thing is that the Shure had less output as well. These clones seem ti do really well considering their cost.
Just the video ive been looking for Mr. Craig! I’ve been seeing these Stagg versions of mics everywhere and wondering if they’re any good, thanks for the video! There’s definitely a different in sound to my ear, but for that price difference perhaps it’s worth it to someone starting out or on a budget!
That’s about what I feel. I think they tried to emulate the sm57 sound but the treble seemed a bit harsher sounding. Great for beginners. However, the real star is the Behringer xm8500. A Shure sm58 clone. Quite funny how these people making clones put the number of the original backwards!
@@iancraig I’ll have to take a look at that! I’ve been looking for a mic I can use for guests on my podcast (on another channel) that will be fairly cheap, so maybe the Behringer clone will be it! Will we be getting a review of that ElectroVoice you’re using?
Here’s the xm8500 Ben. IMO, a bargain. I sometimes use it in preference to the sm58 because it has a big sound. Aha .... you noticed the Electrovoice! Great mic. Dead even on the front. I’ve used it off camera for quite a while now but recently decided I’d try it in view just to see if it gets in the way of bits of gear and arm gestures. I will make a video about it sometime soon.
Thanks Kevin. The beauty of a Canon camera! That hiked up the sharpness big time. Yes, these 'clones' don't do too badly. The best of the bunch though is the xm8500 which is an sm58 clone. See how they altered the am to cm and 58 to 85 .... That one was just £12!!!
I just remembered i had one of those stagg 57 clones. I think the name was different though. One day, it fell and shattered into pieces. It got a huge hole and the capsule just fell of before too.
They’re not brilliant. I thought a bit harsh in the treble for a dynamic ... I think they were trying to mimic the frequency response of the sm57 in its sojnd reproduction.
Thanks for that test and review Ian. I have no stagg Microphones, but have a few of their cables. They work fine. I have Half a dozen of the Pyle versions of the 57 they work great for messing about with. Cheap as chips as well.
Actually, this mic came with a box and cable. Never tried the cable because I thought it might be just a cheapo and play up. I’d never heard of Stagg until someone mentioned them in my sm57 video.
Stagg SDM70 do get quite similar sonic test results as SM57 in other peoples mic tests and most people recommend it because of that and the silly low "17 bananas" price point, maybe the manufacturer should raise the price!! It's tricky the whole marketing thing!...Apparently Stagg is a Belgium company.
I’d never heard of them. It’s really not that bad a mic either. Quality control might not be as good, but it sounds perfectly reasonable. I have another clone on the way .... Behringer!
Yes, I agree. The problem is the price isn’t it? That Stagg is cheap for what you get so do we overlook sonic problems or just accept it because of the price?
@@iancraig I think it mostly comes down to what you're recording & how crucial it is in the mix, but saying that...would anyone actually be able to tell the difference once it's all been mixed. For £17 I really don't think you can complain about a slight difference in low end. If you're recording something with a very wide frequency range such piano, you wouldn't use a dynamic anyway. Great video as always!
Why people always want ti pay a lesser price? Mkh416 1k people buy clones for $600, sm57 is $100 but people want ti pay $50‽ so you people pay $600 for a clone but not $100 for the legit product?
Well, if it sounds OK, I guess people are happy to pay a quarter of the price. The Beringer xm8500, which is an sm58 clone is actually very good at around $20. Price is not always a great indicator of quality. Try the Sennheiser MKE400 and justify its $200 price! I wouldn't pay $20 for it. Yes, you mostly get what you pay for but some companies live on a reputation sometimes that isn't always justified.

A cheap clone of the SM57!
Hi Ian . Thanks, I'm glad to have this review of the Stagg dynamic microphone. I'm going to go ahead and give it a try.
Hi Richard. There’s also a Behringer clone .....

If anything Ian and quite weirdly, the Stagg had the edge when listening on the speaker of my iPad. Cheers, Dave.

I just ordered one for a tom tom mic. Thanks for the review.
Glad it was useful.
The Shure has a warmer, deeper feel to it but not worth the difference in price tbh, especially that you can EQ that while recording as well.
Yes, the price of the Stagg swings it!
Turns out, it's really hard to eq the cheap away.
Wait! 17 pounds? Wow. And hey! Your videos look REALLY crisp! Nicely done! ✔️

Yes. Another I’ve never seen!
@@iancraig neither did i until now!
Staggeringly good value for a 57 clone Ian...unlike the Behringer version...which is not a clone ;-)
It is. Some of these cheap mics are really quite surprising.
The shure definitely has more low end & the stagg comes across slightly more tinny listening on my Yamaha HS7's but for £17!

Another one, Tbone MB 75 for 24 bucks inc rotten cable and hard case!
Plus tax and post for us now in the UK. Great pity because I like Thomann, but they’re no longer a cheap option for us.
Serves us right I guess!
