There's a problem here with people saying "the West" - as most of them just mean the USA. Eating horsemeat is quite normal in several Western countries, including France, Switzerland, Belgium and Italy. It's not commonplace as horsemeat tends to be expensive. There's a lot of people here declaring horse meat to be illegal in various countries, when generally it isn't. Consumption of horse meat is illegal in many US states, but the production of it isn't and in several states it's still legal to eat. Horse meat isn't illegal in Canada - you can find it in butchers and supermarkets in Toronto and Quebec. Eating horse meat is relatively unusual, but it's not as rare as some commenters are suggesting.
In Russia, horses are eaten, sausages and canned goods are made from them, and meat is dried and smoked. Raw meat is also sold. This is not very common and depends on the region, probably, but you can’t surprise a Russian with horse meat.

Im in my 80s. At one time you could buy horse meat before the mid 1970s at slaughter-butcher houses here in the US. It was a lot cheaper than beef, and if cooked properly it was ok, as it had a tendency to be tough, and stringy.

@@DigDigJAPAN There is a funny video in Russia where a man leads a horse by the leash. And suddenly she stops abruptly, makes a frightened look and runs away with the man and the leash. And the man with this horse is sliding on the ground and trying to stop it. This is all because the horse found out that it was going to the Kazakhs, and they would eat it. Well, Kazakhs also drink milk from horses, kumis is called.
Sound the castella makes 😫, asmr. About spices and sugar: generally heat brings out the flavors in them. That’s why if you freeze your homemade spicy food, you’ll notice it has lost some of its spiciness when thawed back out. The exemption to this is food cooked in a slow cooker, species decrease when cooked for that long
Those sweet potatoes look like the kind I can get at my Korean grocery store. My mom used to buy them so much and a lot at a time(she roasted them too) that I got tired of eating them at some point😂 But with ice cream sounds quite tempting. Maybe I'll give it a try the next time she decides to roast some sweet potatoes haha And those macarons looked so cute!☺️ (And as for the salmon roe, I have never eaten them before but I would like to try them one day!)
Raw horse meat! I wish I could try eating it without fear of getting sick X") Horse meat is a common (but still expensive) type of meat here, in Kazakhstan. Kazakh people been eating it since early ages, making besparmak (bolied meat and boiled dough squares) and kazy (smoked and boiled horse sausage). There's also drink named Kumis (which also means "silver") made of smoked and fermented horse milk Seeing someone from other country enjoying horse meat is a nice surprise!
Horse meat is a common meat in Kazakhstan! I didn't know that. Thanks for letting me know 😊 There are many different dishes and drinks in the world, so I would like to travel to enjoy them!

I believe this sweet potato that you got and I think baked if I recall is also a special type of sweet potato that's grown in Japan and that can lower blood sugar...
Amazing the vending machine culture in Japan, i know that other countries has vending machines, but Japan takes it to another level. I am talking from Brazil and vending machines are not common here.
You're correct, that we, in the USA don't regularly eat salmon roe. We mostly just see it in Japanese restaurants and sushi bars. Some very expensive restaurants are starting to use it. We also don't eat horse meat. A long time ago, horse meat was used in canned dog food. I don't know why we don't eat it because they certainly exterminate healthy horses just because they have a broken leg or foot. Since they're pastoral animals, their meat should be very clean too. I've always wanted to ask. When you eat the yolk of an egg, what do you do w/ the white? I'm sure you don't waste it.
Thank you for always watching! I learned that salmon roe is not common in the US, and I realized that food culture is diverse! I thought horse meat was eaten in other countries too, although I think it's also a cultural difference! I freeze any leftover egg whites, and when I have a lot, I make meringues☺️
Hey, It's also worth noting that the US mainland is so large, we have many different food cultures here regionally as well. For example, most of the US may never see Salmon/Fish Roe outside of expensive Japanese restaurants but where I live in California, it's a very common grocery store item. California, at least the southern area of the state, is a huge mixing pot of cultures. Where as in other states, you would see much less verity.

10:58 macaroon and macaron are two different cookies, actually! The cookie shown in the video is definitely macaron. (I know it's too late to change the text on the video, though.)
I wish roe was more popular in the US. We have caviar from sturgeon, but even that is usually specialty and very expensive because it's seen as a luxury delicacy. But for any other kind of fish roe I have to look at Asian grocery stores to find anything. Even then I never find fresh roe, only things with roe flavor. It's very frustrating, because I love mentaiko and it's almost impossible to find!
Caviar is a luxury delicacy in Japan too, and although it is sold, it is expensive and out of my reach 🥹 Ikura in the US tastes like fish eggs, so it must be a bit hard to eat... 🥹 Is mentaiko not very common in the US? I didn't know that!! In Japan, salmon roe and mentaiko are always available in supermarkets, so I would like to have a Japanese supermarket in your town 🤔

I like to eat it with a strong Dijon mustard not far from the strongness and taste off Wasabi. And thin smoked slices of horsemeat where called Hamburgerkött (kött=meat) when i was a child. My mother made sandwiches with that and cream cheese with horseradish flavor. So i really like this kind of meat, though im not much for eating raw myself though. Those salmon Roe as you call it westerners would call it salmon caviar are bigger than what we get here I always thought that they were much smaller than that those are huge. No it's not not popular is just depends on people and what they like here it's sold usually in much smaller size than what you have I mean they're tiny in comparison to what you have and they usually sold with a possibility of cream cheese if you want to mix them together... I have seen small packages for people trying to impress somebody with the idea of salmon caviar add caviar itself is not kosher so having something that looks like caviar and it's slightly salty like caviar well you get the idea it's sort of the kosher variety.

It's interesting how food culture is completely different depending on the country and region! I've never eaten rabbit meat, and I've never seen it in Japan, but I'm very curious about it 😳
To be honest horse I'm surprised are eaten mostly because... how muscly they can be i just never thought that they'd produce enough or even good meat. Horses are slender creatures and their muscle would explain why it's much less common to eat them.
You are absolutely right!! Because they are muscular, they tend to have a lot of red meat and a firm texture. However, surprisingly, they have no unpleasant odor, and the best way to eat them is as sashimi. Even in Japan, they are not as common as pork, beef, or chicken, but many people like them😊
In Luxembourg or in Europe they don't eat raw meat or I haven't heard it like that yet, they just eat fish and not everyone likes that. And horse meat is eaten more often as steak

We're not used to eating horse meat in Indonesia, but there's an area in Indonesia called Jeneponto Regency in South Sulawesi province that sells a lot of food called Coto Kuda. Coto Kuda is horse meat cooked in a soup, I've tried it and it tastes so good especially if eaten with rice.
I looked up Coto Kuda and it looked really delicious!!! And it certainly seems to taste even better with rice🤤 I'd like to try it someday✨
Salmon roe is one of my favorites here in the US! It's not as common, but it's a very popular sushi option with gunkanmaki! We more commonly see black caviar in fancy European style restaurants.
I'm glad you were able to post a video about your favorite food, salmon roe! Ikura gunkanmaki is so delicious! It's also very popular in Japan☺️Black caviar is very expensive in Japan, so I can't afford it, but I want to eat it🥹
I had never heard of anyone eating sweet potatoes and ice cream like that before. But, I will be trying that very soon. When I thought about it, I realized you just can't really go wrong with that combination.
This is a popular combination in Japan!!
Please try it! And if it's delicious, please make it popular in your country🥰🍠
Loved that the ice cream looked like a mad/sad dude with a big nose.
Wow! Now that you mention it, you're right! That's funny! That's all I can see now🤣
Great and interesting video! I was hoping to see Mrs. Dig Dig this video at the last miso ramen bit, since it came with two, was kinda surprised she didn’t show! I love seeing the pretty nail art she always has! 🥰
Thank you for watching ☺️!! You complimented her nail art and she is very happy!! Thank you🥰I will appear occasionally, so please look forward to it💅✨

In Italy, we eat a lot of horse's meat
Usually steak to cook rare or medium, another way are "sfilacci"...very thin stripes of dry meat to eat with salad and grana cheese
I didn't know that Italy has a culture of eating horse meat just like Japan does 😊 The combination of dried meat and cheese is the best 😋
We have some of these machines in Spain too, the first one, the orange juice one is pretty common in every supermarket.
I didn't know there were vending machines like this in Spain 😊
I'd like to try it someday 😋
Im in my 80s. At one time you could buy horse meat before the mid 1970s at slaughter-butcher houses here in the US. It was a lot cheaper than beef, and if cooked properly it was ok, as it had a tendency to be tough, and stringy.
I didn't know that the US used to have such a culture! Thank you for sharing this valuable information ☺️ And I'm surprised that horse meat is cheaper than beef! It certainly has a lot of lean meat and is very easy to eat 😳
Very nice video and great picks! ❤
Thank you so much for your lovely comment 🥹✨
In certain regions of Italy horse meat is common to eat, such in different ways. We also have recipes where this meat is used for.
I didn't know there were regions in Italy where they eat horse meat! Thank you for letting me know! In Japan, Kumamoto Prefecture is famous for horse meat 😊
I'm curious. Surely you don't eat these all in one day and are filmed throughout a week or two? I would be bursting and putting on lots of weight by trying all these delicious foods so close together. Haha. Great video as always and grateful to see lots of different foods that aren't popular in the UK.

You might be surprised, but I eat all of these in one day!! I eat them with my wife next to me, and we both feel a bit sick when we finish🤣 I'm thinking of getting some exercise because I might gain weight. (I haven't acted on it yet lol) Thank you for watching as always☺️

I remember jokes about horses and Kazakhs. I live near the Tatars in Chuvashia and we also sell horse sausage, but it is very tough. We mostly use horses to plow the field.
I'm curious about the joke 😳 I've never eaten horse sausage, so I'm curious to know how hard it is!! It's very educational because cultures are different in each country 😌
The exemption to this is food cooked in a slow cooker, species decrease when cooked for that long
Oh, I see 😳
Maybe it lost a little bit of its spiciness 🤔 Thanks for letting me know!!
sweet potato and ice cream is very nice i agree -from USA

@@DigDigJAPAN me too! I find it extremely interesting
Those sweet potatoes look like the kind I can get at my Korean grocery store. My mom used to buy them so much and a lot at a time(she roasted them too) that I got tired of eating them at some point😂 But with ice cream sounds quite tempting. Maybe I'll give it a try the next time she decides to roast some sweet potatoes haha
And those macarons looked so cute!☺️ (And as for the salmon roe, I have never eaten them before but I would like to try them one day!)
I definitely recommend topping sweet potatoes with ice cream! You might get tired of them if you eat too many 😂
You should also try salmon roe 😋

Raw horse meat! I wish I could try eating it without fear of getting sick X") Horse meat is a common (but still expensive) type of meat here, in Kazakhstan. Kazakh people been eating it since early ages, making besparmak (bolied meat and boiled dough squares) and kazy (smoked and boiled horse sausage). There's also drink named Kumis (which also means "silver") made of smoked and fermented horse milk
Seeing someone from other country enjoying horse meat is a nice surprise!
Horse meat is a common meat in Kazakhstan! I didn't know that. Thanks for letting me know 😊 There are many different dishes and drinks in the world, so I would like to travel to enjoy them!
I didn't know you could do that with chicken skin I think I have just come up with something for our New Year's dinner thank you so much our New Year's is literally in less than a month's time. I think I'm going to try to make garlic wrapped in chicken skin because it looks interesting and it might taste tasty. If I do so I will be sure to let you know and thank you again.
Wow, you should definitely try that in the new year!
I think it's delicious to sprinkle salt and pepper on the chicken skin!
If you try it, please let me know if it was delicious. I'll be waiting ☺️
Japan's vending machine culture is amazing🤣Are vending machines rare in Brazil? ? And do they sell drinks?🤔
@@DigDigJAPAN Yes vending machines are rare in Brazil, and they more common in São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, and they sell soft drinks and snacks.
@@SerDinoOfficialI was gonna say that! Washington state it’s pretty common.
I want that salmon roe and rice so bad it looks so delicious
I definitely want you to try Hokkaido's salmon roe bowl 🥹✨

We don't eat horse in the UK. Although there was a scandle about 12yrs ago where horse meat was illegally found and not declared in some beef products that were imported into the country.
That's a pretty shocking scandal 😱 Beef and horse meat are completely different, so I can't believe that happened 🥹
10:58 macaroon and macaron are two different cookies, actually!

In Sweden you can buy a delicious smoked horsemeat sausage in selected stores, to slice and have on your buttered open sandwich. Called Gustavskorv. Korv=sausage.

There's a chain in the balkans or at least Slovenia called Hot Horse! Serves horse bugers in a lepinja
So horse meat dishes are eaten in that region too 😳 I've never seen a horse meat burger in Japan either!!
They sell Salmon Roe/Ikura in the states! I'm however sadly not too big of a fan of it...but I do like the smaller roe, Tobiko and Masago. ^^
It's true that people's tastes may differ when it comes to salmon roe 😂 Some people find the texture too unpleasant if the pieces are too big! Tobiko and Masago are also very delicious ✨
I was about to go "Ew" to the sweet potato and ice cream, but then I remembered, at Thanksgiving in the US, many people have sweet potato pie with ice cream on top. Or at least in the South where I live. Very interesting video, thank you for posting it!
Thank you for watching as always!✨ In Japan, sweet potatoes are often eaten as a dessert, so it's a very popular combination! I'd like to try the combination of sweet potato pie and ice cream as well ☺️
I wish I had these vending machines near where I live, all the ones near me only have chips 😭
I guess frozen vending machines are still rare 🥹 I hope they become more common around the world 🥹But the chips are delicious too!!!🥔
@@DigDigJAPAN In America, due to vandalism, these would be too costly to upkeep for the public. But you do find some frozen vending machines inside of places such as factories, steel plants, and other rougher type of jobs! My last job had Sandwiches, frozen meals, and a vending machine dedicated to cakes and desserts as well!
Thanks for letting me know!!
I wonder why Japanese ikura (salmon caviar) is so big🤣
It looks so yummy to eat with cream cheese! I'll try it next time.
