We are strangers in this city and poor in this land,
Caught in your snare and trapped in your net.
Though the horizons are wide, they are closed to us,
For the chains of your tresses bind our hearts.
I cannot refrain from gazing at you for all my life,
O king of beauties, do not turn your gaze away from me.
Though many in your entourage surpass me,
I find no equal to you in all the world.
In my heart, I once wished to offer my life for you,
But then I remembered it is a meager offering.
This is a tale of my pain that I share,
For no scent comes from perfume unless it’s set on fire.
If I claim that I am not troubled,
The color of my face reveals the secrets of my heart.
You wonder at my love in this old age,
Yet you, so young, have stolen this old heart.
I will not take my eyes off your bow-shaped brows,
Even if they pierce my eyes with arrows.
I marvel at the wisdom of those who counsel me,
Go away, master, for a lover never heeds advice.
Saadi says: "A beautiful figure is made for gazing,
If you do not see, what is the use of clear sight?"
