Compared to some UK cities the buses in Birmingham seem quite modern, although I don't really know how much that is to do with the recent takeover of West Midlands buses by National Express and perhaps pumping in some extra revenue.
National Express has run West Midlands Buses since 1995 taking over from West Midlands Travel, the buses in the West Midlands are run as National Express West Midlands and National Express Coventry Buses and have not just taken over the buses in the West Midlands and is one of the modernist fleets in the country

They have one of the best maintained fleets and yes national express have heavily invested consistently for over a decade at least
