Lost Hydra Surfboard Review - Great Super Groveler

  • WOW, this is a fantastic super groveler. Best in smaller waves maybe chest high and below. Also better in softer conditions which is perfect for Bolsa.
    I would place this board in terms of grovelability between the Sweet Potato and the Seaside for those of you familiar with firewires. The reason being, a 5'2 Sweet Potato is 32L, a 5'2 Seaside is 26.5L, and the 5'2 Hydra is 27.2L. Somewhat in between.
    I surfed it as a 2 + 1/2 (I say half because my buddies trailer fin is tiny). I also surfed it as a quad, and then again as a 2 +1 using the NVS stabilizer. Let me know which you thought looked best on me.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому +4

      this is my subjective option of course but the performance category for me would be boards like the Sub Driver, Sharpeye Disco, Pyzel Phantom, etc. So boards that to the normal person might be considered a performance board. Taking a high performance board and then making it a tad wider and ticker. As for grovelers, something between that and the seaside.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому

      tough question. I guess it depends on how small a wave. from a peformance standpoint, I like the hydra better. from a fun factor with a bunch of surf options, the 6' Sunday. it's just such a cool board. but they both have a place in the quiver, for me, my seaside and potato sort of fills the short sub 5'3" board. so no hydra for me. The 6' sunday is the only board of its kind in my quiver.

  • @vince____

    Appreciate the detailed review! How does the Hydra compare to your FW mashup in groveling? I'm in the market for a versatile groveler for those small fatter gutless days.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому +3

      grovels better of course since it's its whole design and purpose.
      if you compared the 5'2 Hydra to the 5'6 Mashup, they are roughly the same liters but the hydra has 3 distinct advantages for groveling. 1) the hydra is putting most if its volume under your chest for better paddle power whereas the mashup has to push it out evenly through the nose and tail. The nose serves no purpose for groveling. in fact in most performance boards, the nose sits out of the water for surfing, paddling, etc. 2) the hydra is much wider which means it will plane easier at lower speeds. the negative to that is at higher speeds, it's harder to displace. 3) since the board plans better at lower speeds, in weak softer waves, the board surfs better. making it a better groveler.
      having said that, someone like a pro can push around the smallest of boards so for them, they would rather have the performance. in fact, most pros grovelers are usually a version of their pro board but 1/4" wider and 1/16" thicker. nothing drastic since they are training really year round and can't and shouldn't be using different boards with different design characteristics. Hope that makes sense. I think the Hydra is a great groveler but since I can push around my mashup in roughly the same waves, I like the nimbleness and performance of the mashup over the benefits of the hydra groveling. :) With that said, for me, if the waves got smaller than 1.5', I'd want the Hydra.

    How do you feel about traction pads on Grovelers? Coming from surfing mostly mids, I’m always hesitant to throw one on a shortboard even though I know it will likely help tremendously. Just not into the aesthetic. Do you think they’re a must have? Seems like it could be a game changer surfing small waves.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Місяць тому +1

      I think it depends on your level of surfing. If you are really comfortable on a mid, then a shortboard should be easy for foot placement. My boards have staged traction. They have the kick which tells me if my foot is all the way back, the arch bar only covers the back half of the traction pad so that I know if I'm on it but not touching the kick, i'm basically over the back fin or between. If i'm on the flat part of the pad, I know my feet are over the front fins.
      for me, it is a must but for others, likely not. You are right though, I don't like the idea of putting a pad on my Too Fish but for other grovelers, it doesn't bother me. Watch my AIPA dark twin video, you will see me step right off the back. Also on my HELM Weekender, it's a softtop, since it has no pad, I step right off the back quite often. I'm certain if I surfed without a pad for a while, I would get better at it, but my brain hates thinking when surfing, LOL.

    @ThomyeSurfs looking good on those small waves. Have you ever tried the lib tech construction? I'm in doubt of getting a hydra 5'5 or a SP2 5'4. I'm surfing gutless flat wind swells. How do you compare those 2 boards? And which one do you prefer? Did you ever get the SP2 and if not why not?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  4 місяці тому +1

      Good questions. I have never owned a libtech or surfed one so my perception of them could be wrong. A while back I did go to a shop to pick one up but when I held it, it was just too heavy. I didn't like the idea of a groveler being so heavy. I know they are more durable but durability wasn't my highest priority. Grovel was.
      In terms of comparing the two, the SP has a tiny bit for grovel power for 4 reasons: 1) it is almost 1" wider. In slow waves, the board will get to plane quicker. 2) a tad hard to tell but the tail is fuller. 3) SP2 has a tiny bit more liters is a shorter package. more foam under the chest. 4) it's lighter which could equal even more buoyancy.
      Having said that, for all the same reasons, the Hydra will have the tiniest bit more performance. both are marginal differences so take it with a grain of salt. If your waves are truly small and soft, go for the grovel.
      In the two sizes I tested, both 5'2, the grovel to performance gap was too great to compares. They weren't even in the same category of boards at that point. I chose not to get the SP2 cuz the smallest size offered was too big for me. if they made a 5'1 or 5'0 at around 29/30 liters, I probably would have moved on it. But since I have my TwiceBaked, I couldn't justify it.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому +1

      I really liked the hydra, as an FYI though, it felt similar to my Seaside. Having said that, the thing that helps in those conditions aside for heeps of volume, is width. The wider the board is the less speed you need to plane and get out of the water. Your dom2 is 20.25" wide, RNF96 is also 20.25". Taking volume out of the equation, those two will plane roughly the same, rocker being the other factor. A flatter board does better to plane as well.
      Moving onto what will work better, something wider, and something a little flatter. I would recommend trying to go with more liters and wider just to make those types of days way more fun. On those days, quantity matters and quality is already out the door. Hope that makes sense.
      Here are some choices:
      Hydra 5'7 PU - more liters and more width
      Seaside 5 '6 - 1" wider and also helium
      Sweet Potato 5'4 - way wider are more float. this would be an uber groverler. Also it is so much shorter which helps make the board feel skatier and fun in those drab conditions.
      I sorry I don't have much exposure to other board. I did just ride the Bobby Quad which I loved and am working on releasing the review soon. But, you may be right, very similar in many ways to the RNF96 espeically the width and volume.
      I did ride a very fantastic board recently that I will mention. it was a 5'2" Soft top from HELM called the weekender. It is a mini simmons quad and likely not for everybody. Harder to surf but ridiculous for catching waves and making a crap day super fun. I put out a short video where I caught 44 waves in 3 hrs. I would have caught 100 I think but I was talking to a guy I had met about a surf trip to the Mentawai's. Distracted me and I let my friend take a lot of my waves that I had inside position on. This is just a thought, I normally hate foamies and soft tops but this one blew my mind.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  20 днів тому

      I think from a liters to length ratio, the Seaside and Hydra are better grovelers with the White Tiger being only slightly behind in grovel ability. However, that also means that the White Tiger can perform better in better conditions. All three are short grovelers so as the waves to bigger and punchier, all three would struggle above shoulder high waves, with the White Tiger being able handle slightly punchier waves. The swallow cut outs on the tails of the Seaside and Hydra make them better for groveling, more straight line projection. At least for me, someone that surfs very front footed or neutral. Rarely heavy back foot.

      Awesome mate, thanks for the reply, gives me some good info! So the white tiger maybe has slightly more upper end range, and the other 2 covers more lower? • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  19 днів тому

      @@joshlittle2031 in a nutshell yes. WT higher top end, the other two better bottom end. In regards to turning, they are similar in that they all turn easily but here are the slight differences. the BQ with the widest tail turns the easiest when waves are smaller, better put, when you don't have too much speed. As it goes faster, wider tails get stiffer on turns. The seaside likely turns best at the mid size waves like waist to shoulder and WT best on the top end. They all work well throughout the different waves but each has their strengths.
      I'm not saying that the BQ doesn't work in waist to chest, in fact, in waist to chest, they all work their best, i'm just pointing out where each board is better than the other. Hope that makes sense.
      simply put, all three boards work best if you are only comparing the board to itself in waves waist to chest high. but of the three, BQ works better than the other 2 in sub 1.5, Seaside for 1.5 to 3, and WT 3 to 4. Let me konw if that was confusing.

      i would they Hydra to be more similar to the Seaside. The twice baked has more volume per inch and is wider at the relative length so the TB is a tab better groveler. So then the Hydra is slightly better at performance. it all depends on what size you surf them at but I tend to ride my boards in and around the same liters for the design of the board.
      Anyways, comparing the two, at say 30L, the hydra will be longer and narrower. The TB will be shorter, wider making it thicker therefore a tad better with smaller waves. Hope that helps a little.

      I weight 145 now, but closer to 140 when I shot this. I surfed the 5'2 which was closer to 27.25L. I consider myself high intermediate for paddling strength, very advanced for paddling endurance. Also very high advanced for positioning.
      if you are intermediate, 34 might be ok. if you are above, it may be too big. It is rather wide so you should have a better idea when you put it under your arm.

    Whats the difference between this and the Rnf retro. virtually the same IMO besides the fin setup. same litres

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому +1

      to me they look vastly different. The RNF Retro has a classic "Fish" outline with a retro swallow tail. The wide point is more forward and the fin setup is not only a dedicated quad but the quad is pushed back in the twin position. The Hydra outline is more modern. It too has its wide point forward but not as much, it has more of it's rails parallel. Also, the fin is modern quad with a stabilizer/thruster option. The tail has bevels on the outside which actually helps with setting a pivot point. I find this type of tail, same as on the El Tomo Fish, very helpful for my heelside turns. Lastly the bottom. I don't know the bottom of the RNF Retro but the Hydra has what I think looks like the old Stewart Hydra hull. It may or may not be the reason it is named Hydra. I have not found anything supporting that but it makes sense.
      The hyda will surf more like a traditional groveler. The RNF Retro is a fish. probably hard to surf backside but very drivey and fast.
      Sorry for the late reply.

    Hey thomye, i just the hydra 5’9 since the local surf shop didnt have the puddle jumper as a groveler. At 5’7 175 i hope it has enough float. Easy paddle and wave cathing ability for 1-3 foot east coast summer mush? Thanks

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому +2

      should be ok, east cost has small waves but they have push compared to the same size waves on the pacific. The volume to weight ratio you are running with the hydra is .2142857. my ratio when i tested the 5'2 hydra was .189655. I'm basically taking the volume of the board divided by our weight. That board should be fine since it is also very wide. That width will help get you into smaller waves sooner, it takes less to plane the board.

      @ThomyeSurfs  5 місяців тому +1

      the SP2 for gutless sub 1.5 ft. BQ for sub 1.5 with a bit more push. Hydra was nice but I feel like it was similar to the BQ in terms of grovel but the BQ performed a tad better. all subjective of course.

      @ThomyeSurfs  5 місяців тому +1

      @@JTJorge the new one in my opinion surfs better than the original. I like the Baked Potatoe best but the SP2 has a better pivot point than the original SP making it just a tad easier on bottom turns and other drawn out turns. The SP tail was so wide and round it was harder for me at least to keep the rail set if I had too much speed. Both boards don't do well in better punchier surf but I feel like the SP2 is a tad more performance than the SP. :)

    some of your best looking surfing on this board. We are the same age but I am on the east coast - looking at a 6'4 Hydra 47 liters vs a 6' sweet potato 49 liters - I am 205 pounds and 6' tall - what do you think?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  11 місяців тому +1

      i've always felt that "shorter" boards work better in smaller waves. I know that the East coast waves are generally smaller and lack energy so I'd say the SP2. Get the extra liters and keep the board shorter. It will be easier to turn on the smaller waves. Keep it loose with a set of pivot quads. I'd highly recommend the NVS Aipa Sequencers. I just recently tried that on my baked potato and it took what I thought was loose already to another level. Which btw, I personally don't like, but with a bigger board in small waves, makes the most sense.
      The good thing about those fins are that they have plenty of down the line speed but when turning, the smaller rear fins coupled with the gap between the two fins, make them super loose and sensitive.
      Having said all that, I loved loved loved the hydra. But I surfed it in a 5'2, at the same size as the SP that I surfed. The hydra was more maneuverable, but I figure it is because I surfed short. I'm certain the 6' hydra would surf better than the 6' SP, but then grovel way worse. At 6'4, you will lose some of that performance, therefore why not just get the board that will grovel better and likely surf about the same.
      Anyways, at your height, the 6' SP should be fine if you are a decent paddler. My buddy who is coming off surgery is 5'8 and 215lbs. He just got the 5'10 SP. He needs 44L roughly but because of his height, has a hard time finding the right Liters to height ratio. Looking at nothing else, I'd say the two you are looking at will surf about the same but getting the board that gets you on more waves per session, especially at our age, will be the better call. Then, get another better performing board for better/bigger days.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  10 місяців тому

      about the same. although one I surfed as a PU and the firewire is Epoxy (Helium tech). The hydra has more fin options since you can run it as a quad or a 2+1. The cluster is too tight for a thruster even though you probably could run it as such. Both can be run as twin but likely not recommended.
      I would rank them the same. I prefer the Seaside but mostly cuz of the construction. They surf about the same but the seaside after a year of surfing barely has any pressures.
