Walman was a bonus from the Leddy trade, he surprised everyone with his play.
I think Steve wanted to trade a D, no one wants Holl, Maata or Petry, SJ wanted who had been better than them - Walman.
Gaining a 2nd then getting rid of it is no big deal to me. Steve still has Detroit's 2nd round pick.
Edvinsson and Johansson are coming in, I hope Edvinsson takes Walman's spot beside Seider.
I say wait, let this play our, Stevie Y still has my trust.

Holl or petry I get, but I find it hard to believe no one wants Maatta attached with a 2nd rounder. Can either 3 be sent to the ahl also (who cares about waivers)?
The only thing that would make sense is if in a later trade, SJ retains some salary or gives up a player/pick in a 3 way trade.

If no other gm would take walman on waivers in late June...that is staggering as well. Yzerman did not throw in a free second rounder without a reason. Crazy cap trade results in nothing coming back for a legit player on a decent contract. We won't soon forget this puzzling move without context.

You never know if someone will be claimed on waivers until you actually put them on waivers haha
Another team isn't going to be like yeah... we won't take
Of course not cause someone might be an IDIOT LIKE SY and give you a 2nd!
But if you put the guy on waivers now 31 teams! Have to pass on the Guy.

Remember: if trading picks and players was being done for another move, you would NEVER make that move before confirming the other deal. That means Detroit should already know what is going to happen. Likely that removes all free agency moves, including Guenzel. So don’t get so excited about something huge. Sure, you can dream about a Marner deal but doing something like that before Seider and Raymond contracts would be un-Yzerman like. What else could it be then? Maybe look at big tough rugged defenseman another team is wanting to move because of cap reasons. Think about Tampa Bay shedding Cernak for cap reasons.

Im only a few minutes in and I'm left remembering all the wtf nay-sayers when Stevie Y chose Moritz Seider. Nobody but the inner core of Yzerman, Lidstrom, Draper, and maybe one or two others knows what chess pieces are being moved internally and between teams. This is all Monday morning quarterbacking ahead of what the Wings will look like when the puck drops in October.

Obviously there is something that the organization did not like that we are not aware of - as they pointed out he was a healthy scratch a few times down the stretch last year - when they were battling for the last playoff spot - so when you consider that we should not be surprised that he was traded - I was not - just surprised that they had to include a 2nd round pick to move him . I mean Pierre Luc Dubois and his $8.5 mill/year for the next 6 years just got traded straight up last week !!! That is a player and contract that is going to get GMs fired - I am pretty sure Rob Blake saved his job by getting rid of that albatross plus he is looked at as a locker room lawyer - on top of his poor on ice performance. So it blows my mind a 2nd had to go to move Wallman something is really off there

Let the summer play out and see what else transpires to get a larger picture of the team. The trade by itself is horrible value...unless you are a sharks fan. There are more moves to be made for sure...future considerations? Hard to understand in a vacuum. More changes seem to be forthcoming. Easy to criticize this move on so many levels. The next few weeks should be very interesting.

Didn't see this one coming at all.
However, perhaps we should not be surprised as it is Stevie.
It could be that it is a three party deal that is split over several days because important dates during a LONG season are as it is now!
The third part is either during draft day or 7/1. Could be for Saros (which I don't think is likely), could just as well be someone else of greater value on the open market (more likely for RW). Here, SJ is the recipient of a contract and a bonus to use their cap days before everything opens (the Wallman deal becomes more logical now).
So, I don't think it's a pure cap dump at all for some of the RFA/UFA's we have to deal with. Wallman does not fit into such a role as his cap is too low. The NHL has approved the trade, so they know the reason why the deal looks the way it does "today". in conclusion, I don't think it's about personal chemistry when it comes to Wallman either, the basis is too small to even start speculating there.

Could be making room for either Jacob Trouba or Rasmus Andersson.. SY better not give away the 1st rounder for Trouba,

I truly hope I am wrong but the Walman move gives the impression of a player about to enter the Player Assistance Program. If that is the case and Walman would not have been on your roster anyway, the net result is you moved out $3.4M and traded one prospect for another. The second round pick came in and went out in the same day.

We all want a better understanding of this...nobody saw this coming outside of the wings brass.

    • @pjpredhomme7699

That is at least a wrinkle that could make this a little more sense. I did not mind the idea of trading Wallman - we need to make space for some of the young Defensemen in the system. I have always been a big defender of Yzerman even when I did not understand the idea of signing some of these free agents - especially with term ala - Chiarot, Copp, Holl. I have watched the leafs a lot so I was really scratching my head when he signed Holl but I figured they saw something that I didn't but I am now really questioning the red wings scouting dept. especially pro scouting. Especially when it comes to cap space when you consider Wallman and Holl were on almost identical contracts - Wallman played 20 minutes /night - Holl I don't think dressed for 20 games that is a big difference ! This is coming the day after Florida won the Stanley cup with exactly 3 players on their roster that they drafted !!! So there are teams/ GM's out there that are acquiring players through trades / free agency that are contributing a lot to a winning team. I have never been a big believer in that you are going to get well by big free agent signings as all teams do everything they can to tie up their best players long term. Only in very rare cases are really quality players going to be available as a free agent. Detroit's biggest problem I still say is they don't have any true star players that really move the needle . Larkin is clearly their best and he is a very good player but he is not a clear difference maker.

Sorry to say this I have always been a staunch Yzerman defender, and I am not trashing him now but I can say without any hesitation that Jim Nill was the best GM back when the core of the contending team was coming to the end of its run. By 2010 everyone had realized that Holland was not a cap era GM he had two deputies under him at the time Yzerman and Nill. Both who were ready to run their own teams, I have decided absolutely that Nill was the best of them. Look at what he has done with Dallas and he has turned that team over a couple of times already. Back when he started in Dallas the red Wings were desperate for a top center - at the time - and all we heard was - yeah so is everyone else - so Holland signed Stephen Weiss and then Franz Nielsen . Within 2 weeks of being GM in Dallas - Nill swung a trade for Tyler Seguin - which at the time was unthinkable . I am not getting my hopes up for this coming year , I keep thinking about how last season would have been if - - Alex Lyon had not played 30 something games most way above expectations and signed Patrick Kane - which was a completely fluke that he was available , could still play at a high level and wanted to try his comeback with the wings. Imagine how last season looks without those two ! that is not pretty

For example, maybe they worked out a deal for potential movement in the draft or "Don't draft this guy if he's there" type agreement. They're sitting at 14 and 15 in the draft, so it makes some sense. Also, it makes sense that part wouldn't be announced.

Have been thinking about this quite a bit today, here's my theory: this feels a lot like Bill Guerin last year "getting his business done" early. Yzerman knows he has to clear cap and move a defenseman. Yzerman HATES dealing from a position of weakness. Yzerman was scared he'd be stuck with all the mediocre overpaid defenseman near the end of the offseason and no one would be willing to help him get out from under one of them.
But i can't believe he let that get to his head to the point of giving a high quality asset away to trade the only one of those defenseman who actually has a shot to reach his contract value. It should've either been the 2nd attached to a worse defenseman, or just walman (no 2nd attached) to move him. Yzerman just set the market for his own player at a much lower value than he needed to

Walman was our #2 defenseman and NOBODY was taking about something happened to Walman's motivation after the first of the year. Here are a couple of abnormalities that I recognized:
-He gave up on a 2 on 1 near the end of a period goal scored. I commented to a friend, why was he on his heels coasting?
-He toe picked and went head first into his own net and was never the same.
-He had only 1 assist in his last 31 games!
-He only had 42 hits in 63 games for a defenseman is not normal. But he had a respectable amount of blocked shots.
    Assumption:
He was playing hurt and perhaps management felt he could play through it or there was tension there and the two parties expectations were far apart.
Also wth happened with Klim Kostin $2 million player who didn't suit up vs Florida got our ass kicked and Klim was given away.
*Jury is out on Steve not Stevie anymore. He drafts well and his free agency acquisitions favoring veterans over over ripe players in the minors is very suspect.

That out of the way one thing I will defend Stevie on is I think we are putting a bit too much into the 2nd round pick given to SJ. If you think about it it was essentially the same as putting Walman on waivers. SJ clearly wanted a 2nd so DET swapped equal prospects with NSH so that's a wash and got a 2nd round pick so they could give it to SJ without giving them their own 2nd so really all we did was swap prospects and give Walman to SJ for free, now I do think we probably could have gotten at least a pick for Walman but I think we are putting to much into that 2nd round pick.

Edvinsson has had problems with both of his shoulders for several years. It is about the side that he did not perform a very difficult operation on last year. Few remember that he fell badly and hit that side during his last junior year.
The fact that he is not a player in RW right from the start is an important step in his rehab to build up his upper body over time. Once he's up, it's also an evaluation of how his body feels, as important matches are at stake for RW at the end of the season. So a year of rehab and lots of time in the AHL and NHL gives him the best chance to get back on track for next season. Am not gone blame S.Y for that call...

When you talk about "rebuild" I think the last weekend of the season was a perfect barometer - Montreal started their rebuild well after Detroit did - they have some left over players with bad contracts from when they were trying to go on a cup run - like Anderson, Gallagher but they also committed to playing and developing their prospects - and they are loaded with them - Slafkovsky is going to be a star - Suzuki , Caufield are locked up long term - they have a lot of very promising prospects like Lane Hutson. I know the red wings beat them over that weekend but when you look at team who's stock is rising - I like Montreal's much better than seeing what Detroit is rolling out - I have never understood the decision to sign all these overvalued free agent contracts - taking playing time away from prospects - if it is rebuilding that we are supposed to be doing
