3 years later and the guy still answers questions, mad respect ❤️
I just bought this laptop and will receive it Monday.
Your video makes me feel a lot more comfortable, as I bought this with a Best Buy guy on the phone, not in a store. It’s the first time I ever made this type of purchase, unseen.
After looking on UA-cam I thought I made a huge mistake with purchasing the pen on a whim...
Now I’m very thankful!
Great video, great presentation, and thank you for having many different apps to show its plus and minuses!
Hey, what are your thoughts on it after the 2 months? Also, have you tried any of the other computers' pen experiences?
From my experience with a Surface Pro 4, if I ever want to draw, I make sure to flatten it so I can write on it like a notebook. It feels ridiculously uncomfortable to write on it in laptop mode, and I prefer to have the SP4 in portrait orientation for writing.
21area21 True non 2 in 1 laptops are not as good in terms of flat surface drawing/surface
Looking everywhere for a video like this. Thank you!!!
Finally a review that mentioned that the screen wobbles. I was using Surface Pro 4 for many years and I use pen instead of a mouse to do design work in Adobe XD because I often design on the go and there is no place for a mouse. I have to rest my arm on the screen and Surface pro is perfect for that with its extra stability thanks to the support at the back. I was considering to go for a big stronger Surface Laptop, but now I see it just won't work for me. Going for Surface Pro 7. Thanks a lot!!
Alternatively you can get a surface book , cause you can use that in studio mode (i.e flip the screen around on the keyboard) so its essentially a more powerful surface pro. I have the SB1 and been using it for photo retouching with the pen for the last 3 years. Upgrading to the SB3 next month which also allows me some gaming :)
would you still prefer the surface 7? Thinking of getting one or the Surface Pro X.
Thank you for the video, super useful, not many people is doing this kind of method. I'm loving it and beside you save tons of money from buying a super expensive digital canvas. Thumbs up, man!
Thanks, i don't want the need to use the second hand when writing with a pen. This is the video i was looking for. Gonna go for the Pro 7.
Best review ever it felt like asmr
the eraser problem is only because he isn't holding the pen straight towards the laptop. the side of the pen is touching the screen and therefore writing
one of the best review
Thank you
I have a surface laptop, but as a artist the fact that it can’t detach is a deal breaker. Thinking of selling it for a Surface Book 2 soon.
Hey. Did you ever end up getting the Surface Book 2? What do you think about the stylus experience on it, and was it worth? I'd like to hear your thoughts on the device! - Thanks!
Also, have you tried the Samsung Notebook 9 Pen. I've used a SP4 for 3 years now and I got fed up with bow crappy the stylus was (pen has low polling rate and high latency. I didn't know if there was anything better out there, but I felt that pen and paper was better than that tortured note taking experience. I like writing small and neat, but it's virtually impossible. You have to write slow and large if you want any hope of the pen keeping up.
Later, I went to Best Buy and spent hours trying different stylus laptops. I think Samsung Notebook 9 pen from 2018 was #1 writing/drawing experience followed by Apple Ipad Pro 2018 (120 hz refresh and crazy accurate pen was really really good), followed by Surface pro 6 as a distant 3rd.
Btw, if you haven't bought the Surface Book yet, I would highly recommend looking at the 9 Pen.
@@21area21 nice recommendation. I have a Surface book 1. its pretty good, got it as soon as it was released. I also have a surface go. I wish it had an i5. but i knew what i was getting into. at the moment, i'm considering waiting for a surface pro 7 (come on thuderbolt 3). I do like the tablet form factor 40% of the time. But... i really use all of these devices as laptops 60% of the time. The Surface Book is really good, i want something even smaller to fit in a sling bag. The Notebook 9 looks worth checking out
@@aibarra11 Thanks for the update. Had my Samsung for about a month. The stylus experience is indeed glorious, but I really truly miss the form factor of the Surface line. In tablet mode, keys are exposed which is terribly annoying, and when you lay it down, any grains of sand of particles that get on the keyboard will get sandwiched by the screen when you close it.
Also, the touch experience is quite finicky. My shirt registers as a touch all the time, and the edges of the screen pick up accidental touches from me holding the display. Combined with the shirt touches, things get launched from the bottom of the screen or closed randomly.
I think with Ntrig getting better and better, the Newer surfaces will definitely be amazing devices with no compromises.
You can rotate the screen at 180 degrees to get more comfortable at drawing and writing.
If you put the screen down, can you turn it the way you wanna draw?
@@emilyhxm Of course, every computer has a keyboard shortcut to rotate the screen, if I remember correctly it should be CTRL+ALT+DOWN-ARROW (and CTRL+ALT+TOP-ARROW to go back at normal orientation). You can test it, I'm on a Mac right now so I can't be 100% sure.
Would the screen lay flat?
@@abjklmrsakagamiali1651 yes, it would
Handwriting on the Surface Laptop looks horribly uncomfortable.
Why did they not give it a 360° hinge?
The hinge on the Surface Laptop severely limits how it can be used.
You mean 180° hinge. Yes, why not?!
@@jameshannum7270 no, I do not mean 180°
I want to flip the screen all the way to the other side of the keyboard, so that the keyboard folds behind the screen, like for example in the Joga 2in1.
I guess they would kill their surface tablet line with this hinge
@@AntonFetzer they have the surface laptop book
It may help to put something in the back of the laptop screen so it doesn't wobble (like a heavy box). This may be more comfortable than using your other hand
Thank you so much, that’s what i am lookin 4 😔🙏🏻
Do you recommend Bamboo Ink, squid and Nebo for handwriting as opposed to One Note for note taking?
Damn, got this for Christmas and I noticed that my pen strokes skip, I disabled touch when pen is being used but that didn't really help, I guess the wobble makes a big difference, oh and also I need new pen nubs. Used to have a surface pro 4, it's on its last legs, and that was the replacement! Surface pro 4 was notorious for the screen jitterbug because the heat sink goes all the way across the display, would become hot pretty fast.
Looks wonderful
Teoh, it may sound strange but, can you use a Wacom intuos with surface devices? I'm thinking into buying the sb2 but I will have also my intuos working on it. for what I’ve read it may create some drivers conflicts but idk.
The Wacom should work fine with the Surface Book 2.
Hey! If you do try this, can you reply with how it went/ if it works? I have a surface laptop & was thinking about getting a wacom intuos tablet to pair with it!
Thanks Teoh...i'm following you and really grows my admiration about your work....i hope will you soon in Barcelona...
Thanks. I've been to Barcelona once so I'll probably not be back soon
Thank you fir the detail review. 👍
Which surface laptop is this? The go 2?
You're really good at drawing 👌👌
Thanks 😁
AWESOME video review as always ... THANKS ... 😎👍
Thanks 😁
It really performs quite well. 👍 However having a hand behind it so much would tire one's arm out. Maybe there's an accessory somewhere to help stop the wobble. Thanks for this first review Teoh. 😃
It's not for drawing for long periods. It's like drawing on a hard back pad while standing. It's slightly better here since the laptop is resting on the table. But the wobble will always be there because there is no good support
I'll check out your upcoming reviews on this. I think I'd still love to have it.
Lay laptop scrn on table, keybd perpendicular to scrn (in the air), so keybd is facing the person drawing. Rotate the document 80 degrees. Enlarge it so you can write normal sized but when doc is put back to 100% zoom your writing is nice and small, the size it would have been if you typed it.
But can you write on existing jpg documents, like photos??
I meant "rotate the doc 180 degrees"
@@jameshannum7270you can rotate the screen orientation 180 in system settings, so the UI and all is facing correctly your way. You can write on top of jpgs
hi Teoh , did u get the pen with the surface laptop or u bought it separately .
The pen is sold separately
@@teohyc what is the name
@@frm5th420 Microsoft Surface Pen
Wow Teoh,
Nice loaner. You're the man. What a great laptop compared to mine. Thanks for sharing the tricks, ins & outs. Blessings to you and yours.
Kathy B. (Fairylady0227) 💜
Thanks 😁
Very interesting. Do you know where to put the pen for charging? Thanks
This Surface Pen uses AAAA removable battery. No charging is needed.
@@teohyc that explains a lot 😂
Do you suggest to buy the original surface pen or a third party for editing pictures in LR and PS? I can get the original for 69 euros and the third party one for 45 euros.
Haha, I'd rather get your answer than a like, lol.
@@bioptimization xD
So I'm a beginner digital artist, as I have been doing traditional all my life. I am planning on buying this product for art, but, quick and rather random question, can you get Krita, (free animation/art software) on it? 🤔
(Edit: I think I just saw Krita while watching your review, but I'm not deleting this question just to be sure)
Yes. Krita and Medibang Paint Pro are free
@@teohyc thank you so much!!
Thaaaaaaaaaaaannnnks
I'm either deciding between a surface laptop 2, or a yoga 2 in 1. The surface has a better quality screen than the yoga, except it doesn't have the 2 in 1 tablet functionality of the yoga. I'm not sure if I could comfortably use a stylus in a laptop mode, but I've never tried so I don't really know what it is like. What would you recommend?
If you're going to be drawing or writing a lot then get the 2-in-1. Look at your current workflow to decide. Whatever device you buy will not make you want to write or draw more.
hi teoh your video is so good ! :)
i have one question, i want to buy the "lenovo miix 520" for you is good value ? because the microsoft surface is too expensive for me :/
Lenovo is a very good choice if you can't afford the Surface Pro. Maybe it's even the better choice.
Humm ok ! Thank you for helping me :)
Please update your veideo with surface laptop version 7 2024 which seems doesn't support stylus
Can i use the i5-8GB ram version for designing and video editing?
What model is it? Looks like a tablet.
Uncomfortable to draw on a laptop. I prefer surface book 2 or pro.
Yeah, it's awkward when drawing for long period of time.
i originally had that stylus that you used in the video, but now it doesnt work and i think its because the battery ran out. is there a way to recharge it? or do i have to keep buying new stylus's or buy new batteries to recharge it? because it seems like i cant find compatible batteries anywhere
Usually when battery runs out on devices you need to buy new device, for example phones. In all seriousness, Surface pen uses two AAAA-batteries, can be found online.
Are there any cases for the laptop that might help with the wobbling? Are there any cases that provide back support to the screen (similar to surface pro) ??
Not that I know of. Maybe you can find something to prop up the back.
Neat laptop! lots of versitality
Your videos always fall at the right time for me: I just bought an iPad Pro 12.9 and the Apple pencil to write and draw and I hesitate between GoodNotes and Nebo to write. I already use Adobe sketch and Adobe draw for drawing. It's fun, thank youTeoh !
Thanks. Have fun 😁
Can you use the pen for the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go? Or is this just for the regular Surface laptop?
Surface Pen can be used with all Microsoft Surface devices
Unfortunately Microsoft doesn´t support this function on the laptop go
Would it help if you had some sort of stand behind it?
Not really. It's going to be wobbly when writing.
How to undo when in full tablet mode
is there a place to put the pen when you're not using it? such as a magnet
It can stick to the side of the laptop but the magnet is not strong
Thanks!
do you have to own the pen or can you use your finger???
You can use your finger to write but it won’t be as accurate of course
What pen is this
People take photos with iPhones; these photos are jpg. Does any program allow writing on jpg photos? That is, adding writing with stylus to pre-existing photos?
On the Surface laptop? Just download Medibang or Krita, open the photo and write.
Does it stick to the side of the Surface Laptop? On some surface devices it sticks to the side of the device on the metal part of the display.
Yes the pen still sticks to the side. But I don't recommend it for bringing the pen around as the pen can still be knocked off.
The touch screen should be foldable if integrated in the laptop. I am finding it difficult to draw... I need to rest my wrist to draw. 😢
nice
What was the free app you mentioned just after photo shop?
Medibang Paint Pro and Krita are free
Is that a surface laptop go?
How do you use the stylus like a mouse to drag the screen like at 3:36 and 5:00? Is it just one of the side buttons?
Just press the Spacebar and you can move the canvas with the pen.
Does the accuracy seem to be hard to notice?
This is not really for drawing on the screen
Is this the first gen surface pro?
It's a Surface Laptop, not the Pro which is a tablet.
I’d a screen protector required?
No
i see you on that screen
what stylus are you using?
Microsoft Surface Pen
Can you lay down the tablet part when you draw to avoid the wobbling?
You can, but it's going to feel even more awkward to draw on because the keyboard will be in the way
Thank you
Better than iPad ?
Depends on what software you use
@@teohyc which is best for iPad ?
Assalamualaikum, can I use surface pen on any touch screen laptop? Can I use surface pen on Huawei Matebook X Pro? Please do review of Matebook X Pro. You're the best artist tech reviewer. Please Please review this laptop too 🙏🙏🙏
Surface Pen is only made for Surface products and will not work for other touch screens.
I'll see if I can get my hands on a review unit Matebook X Pro. Chances not high.
Teoh Yi Chie ohh, so which stylus can I use with Matebook X Pro? Can I use Wacom styluses with any touch screen laptop?
hi bro, does pen work with powerpoint creation?
It should work
Can the Microsoft Surface laptop go do this?
Nope
Can surface pen be used with first gen surface laptop?
Yes
Could it handle roblox graphics?
Can the pen stick magnetically to the side of the laptop?
No

How do you charge the surface pen on the laptop, if possible ?
Surface Pen uses AAAA battery that lasts for months. No charging required.
@@teohyc oh okay thanks.
But is it possible to charge it with the surface pro?
I saw some videos, where you can attach it to the surface pro, so that it charges
Surface Pen cannot be charge because there's no charging mechanism in the stylus. Did you mistake the stylus you saw?
where ?
Teoh....what happens if you touch the screen with your hand while you're drawing?
It seems it's not as with paper...
It has palm rejection when the cursor appears. So when the cursor appears when the pen is near, other parts of the hand will not be able to create stray strokes.
In short, you can rest your hand on the screen while drawing.
@@teohyc what about the keyboard? Is it locked in case I accidentally hit the keys while writing? :/
@@reishiboo It's not locked so don't press buttons while you write
@@teohyc oh ok, thanks for the fast answer :)
So, you can't bend it all the way to the back?!
Not with this since it’s a laptop
big problem is where would you even store the pen when you're on the go lol
Does the pen stick to the side?
No
Any similar free apps?
Great mqn
Thank you 😁
On my experience with the surface pen... using it on Paint SAI Tool, the lines are horrible(specially when I am trying to make curved lines)
Tony Liu I bought a surface pen from amazon recently called Ciscle and use Medibang for drawing. Only 29.99Works really well in my opinion you should try it if you have a chance
Can I draw on like websites art sites?

Do you know how to draw on an already edited video
Hello! I've recently gotten a surface laptop 3 and bought the Microsoft pen as well. However, when I tried using it on a drawing application named Paint Tool Sai(V2 64bit), the pen pressure sensitivity didn't work.
Any help or tips to get it working would be great :)
If pen pressure works with other apps, it means there's some settings you have to change within Paint Tool Sai. Look for Windows Ink settings either in Windows control panel, or within Paint Tool Sai.
Wow where is his camera in reflection
it's called parallax
ooooh, I can finally make my arm stop committing oof
