As a musician I really appreciate your harmonic analysis of the horns, saying a flat D# sounds better than saying a flat Eb. I also loved the sound of the diminished 7th horn. From a musicians standpoint we would label that as C Eb Gb A……..but technically that is wrong too because an A is the sixth degree of a C major scale but I’ve never heard a musician label a C dim7 chord as C Eb Gb Bbb (B double flat since B is the seventh degree of the C major scale). Nice vid, really enjoyed it, that must have taken a long time to research!
I live in Canada, and lots of American trains come through the crossing I live near... so I definitely hear the resonance of the wonderful K5HL quite often 👍💯

The 1st Gen K5HL is my favorite along with that similar sounding 2nd Gen K5H! CSX has been using those K5H's as well! One Tier 4 uses one, even one of them has the old K5HL. The Narrow Font K5HL with a 2PC 1L has a beautiful deep sound, but that 2nd Gen K5H is lovely!
2 new BNSF GEVOs came with a hybrid K5HLA (1L, 1, 2, 3, 4a), which are BNSF 3284 and BNSF 3671. On the other hand, 2 brand new T4 GEVOs did the same thing but had 3a and 4a on it. BNSF 3673 and 3674 has that horn!

A very good and informative video. I think the raised letter K5HL has single-handedly ruined the state of modern train horns in North America, but I guess there's at least some variety around if you dig enough. Unfortunately, the alternative is usually the equally as depressing raised letter K5LA, but still, at least it's variety of some kind. My age and yearning for the old times is showing. Despite all this, I quite like the original K5HL, as well as the K5HLA and K5HLB. I could handle those if they had the level of monopoly that the current K5HL has. Great video, and I second the idea of making more videos like this of other horns.

I think your notation of these k horns (like 2 piece 1L narrow font k5hl) make more sense than just 1st gen k5hl because technically speaking, K horns don’t have generations, they just have different castings, and I didn’t know about this until recently, and before then, I usually named them by their eras (like 2000 era k5hl, pre-2012era k5hl, late 2010 era k5hl)
There's also a transition between the 2nd and 3rd generation K5HL's known as Early Raised Letter K5HL's, they sound quite similar to the 2nd generation with some subtle differences.
I'm not sure if this counts as a K5HL but what about the horn NS 8105 ( interstate ) heritage unit. Great video do you think you can do more videos like this ( example like K5LLA )
I have a question about the NF2 K5LA. Why does it make that really cool whistling noise when the engineer releases the valve? I have always wondered why it does that.
I actually think I’ve heard a narrow font K5H on a Union Pacific AC45CCTE before. Although I’m not sure if it was a sick narrow font K5HL. Anyways, the unit I’m taking about is UP 7685, and o caught her back in December of 2021.
The GE horns, the #2 bell is a little sharp, around 374 hz. The #3 bell is flat, not sharp like you said. It is around 465 hz. GE K5HLs 262, 308, 374, 465,507
I didn't. I just looked them up and both seem to be off. 982 was a normal K5HL that had it's #2 go missing, and it seems they put a 3A in there instead of a #3, so now it's a 1L 1 3a 3 and 4 combo. 7491 seems to be a Raised Letter K5HL, but with a 2 Piece 1L instead of a 1L. In both cases, they weren't originally equipped with them. There might be more out there too that I didn't know about.
K5HLs are absolutely my all time favorite horns.
26:52. That K5HLB sounds amazing. Reminds me very much of some that I hear in my city.
Thanks for making this video on the K5HL! Now, I know all the variations of this horn.

I think a Leslie would do it justice, or one of those experimental hybrid K5HL’s that MP made that exactly mimic an RS5T

To be honest, the old k5hls sound a bit like a CB&Q 5 chime if it was a horn.
You should make more videos on the histories of different locomotive horns.
In 40:27 it had a K3LA horn which was odd for a five chime manifold. And it was included that NS 8105 had a K5HLA with a 3A in place of 4
