"Sayarma" in Myanmar can refer to either a nurse or a school teacher. And this song, unsurprisingly, is a love song dedicated to a Sayarma. This song has very strong ties to the love story between Myanmar's independence hero General Aung San and his wife Daw Khin Kyi, who was a school teacher who later became a nurse.
The story goes that young General Aung San met and fell in love with nurse Daw Khin Kyi while recovering from a wound at the hospital. Some say that this song was written for Aung San to charm Daw Khin Kyi during their courtship. Others say the song was written by Karen soldiers as a present to Aung San on Karen New Year Day. Whatever the truth is, the song is forever attached to their love story and it's a really popular song to play on the guitar when you're hanging out with friends.
This song was recored live as part of Thar Nge's Moody Saturday series in which he performed/produced/posted a cover song video (and some original as well) every Saturday for a year. Tagu Films supported sound recording and video production for his original songs in this series.
