Howard Shore is one of today’s most prominent composers and his musical renderings of J.R.R.Tolkein’s The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit remain among the most recognisable compositions ever written. His projects range from Scorsese’s Hugo to the Academy-Award winning Spotlight, and have earned him an impressive selection of Academy, Golden Globe and Grammy Awards for the ingenuity and brilliance he brings to each piece.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. One soundtrack to rule them all!
"It was written for 230 musicians, 96 piece symphony orchestra, 60 - 70 voice choir, a boys choir (London Boys Scholar Choir) and many instrumental soloists from all over the world, all four points of the compass", Shore says, with a satisfied smile. A life's achievement, and the passion we all appreciate immensely. A fantastic composer. 36:55
Legend.
Ashton Gleckman He is.....
His core advise boiled down: immerse yourself into the world that you are writing music for.
Such a gentleman and one of the greatest composers of our time🎃
32:00 The girl on the far left is me everytime I watch that scene. True fan right there!
Great! Now i have the urge to listen to the Lord of the rings soundtrack ... or i watch one of the movies... ok, all 3.... in the extended edition.
I had the privilege of playing violin on Mr. Shore’s score for Panic Room and would have loved to have heard him talk about his work. Thank you so much for posting this!
It's very befitting that Shore would be invited to the place Tolkien spent his life in, that's Oxford.
I pray Howard Shore works with Amazon on the New Series
Oh man yes!
I hope to god not.
It can only tarnish the impact that the music of the original scores had.
A good movie can survive a bad score, but a good score can’t survive a bad movie.
I’m afraid the Amazon series will be trash and I’d rather it not tarnish shores legacy.
But it could be good, and in that case I hope he does the music for it.
It’s just a gamble
@@mrnobody2222 I have to say, unless you're using the word "survive" in the financial sense, you have that almost completely backwards. Like, obviously, yeah, your average schmuck couldn't whistle the tune to some "so bad it's been wiped off the face of the earth" movie they've never seen. But, frankly, there are so many examples of "good score, bad film" that it's exhausting. James Horner's got a few; John Williams has some... Look at Jerry Goldsmith - half of that guy's credits are on some of the most dogshit movies ever. Yet, right now, sitting in millions of nerds' gloveboxes, are the soundtrack CDs to those very movies...
lol for that woke dumpster fire? nah, its good shore probably wont be scoring music for that
Created the greatest score ever.
an amazing insight! thanks for putting this online!!
42:37 What a great observation about the physicality of pencil on (staff) paper leading to a unique compositional voice, as a visual art.
Ikr
So incredible!!
Of the 3 sequels to win Best Picture, this guy scored 2.
What a legend

I kinda wished someone would have asked Howard about the great film Seven.
awesome
Respect
Genius
I wished someone asked him how Tom Bombadil's songs would sound like...
Me too.
Judging upon the jolly lyrics of Tom Bombadil's songs in the book, I would assume his theme would sound Shire-related. Also, Howard Shore mentioned @44:42 that Gandalf didn't have a theme because he didn't want much clarity in Gandalf's character since he is an unusual and mysterious being (Shore probably thought adding a musical identity to Gandalf would contradict the wizard's mystery) and similarly, Tom Bombadil is also an enigma, so a point can also be made that Tom Bombadil would not get a personalized musical theme too.
the best Composer and one Maestro.
39:02 "There's a scene in Twin Towers..."
Can't stop laughing right now. The Lord of the Rings: The Twin Towers (tm)
indeed..
He was nervous. Give him a break.
He says Two Towers at the beginning, slip of the tongue I think
Yeah don't worry guys, I know he was probably nervous, I'm sure he knows the title of the movie. In his shoes I would have made even more slips of the tongue. But from the comfort of my room while listening to this, it just made me laugh is all
Dude was nervous. I would be too.
1:42 Is that class available somehow??
36:43 the compositional techniques using the piece went from what? tell me plz~
He has composed such incredible pieces of music, but I think Forth Eorlingas might be his best.
Ed Wood is such a great film
I know everyone loves John Williams but for me, Shore is much more interesting due to his use of electronics. His Scanner score is still one of my favs. LEgend.
I love both personally. Both have their own unique styles.
A god.
is there any reason why this video is no longer available?

24:00 action without musical action
Get off your phone bro!
How can I use some his music as my UA-cam intro without copyright issues???
you arent allowed to
By paying royalties.
it is not hard to compose something similar yourself
@@emanuel_soundtrack Do you think everyone is classically trained in music?
It would have better if the audience in cyber space could have seen the film.
