  • Music from the middle ages:
This our arrangement of Stella Splendens ("Splendid Star"). It is a polyphonic song, with two parts voices from the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat ("Red Book of Montserrat"), one of the oldest extant medieval manuscripts containing music (14th-century). The language is Latin.
    ::: Lyrics :::
    Rit.
    Stella Splendens in Monte
    Ut solis radium
    Miraculis Serrato
    Exaudi populum
    I
    Concurrunt universi
    Gaudentes populi,
    Divites et egeni,
    Grandes et parvuli,
    Ipsum ingrediuntur
    Ut Cernunt oculi
    Et inde revertuntuntur
    Gratiis repleti.
    II
    Principes et magnates
    Ex stirpe regia,
    Saeculi potestates
    Obtenta venia
    Peccaminum proclamant
    Tundentes pectora
    Poplite flexo clamant
    Hic: Ave Maria.
    III
    Praelati et barones,
    Comites incliti,
    Religiosi omnes
    Atque presbyteri
    Milites, mercatores,
    Cives marinari,
    Burgenses, piscatores
    Premiatur ibi.
    IV
    Rustici aratores
    Nec non notarii,
    Advocati, scultores,
    Cuncti ligni fabri,
    Sartores et sutores
    Nec non lanitici,
    Artefices et omnes
    Gratulantur ibi.
    V
    Reginae, comitissae,
    Illustres dominae,
    Potentes et ancillae,
    Juvenes parvulae,
    Virgines et antiquae
    Pariter viduae,
    Conscendunt et hunc montem
    Et religiosae.
    VI
    Coetus hi aggregantur
    Hic ut exhibeant
    Vota, regratiantur
    Ut ipsa et reddant
    Aulam istam ditantes
    Hoc cuncti videant
    Jocalibus ornantes
    Soluti redeant.
    VII
    Cuncti ergo precantes
    Sexus utriusque,
    Mentes nostras mundantes
    Oremus devote:
    Virginem Gloriosam,
    Matrem Clementiae
    In coelis gratiosam
    Sentiamus vere.

This was the music of the "Uncivilized" man of the medieval "dark ages"....
Just compare it to the main stream pop-cult music of today and then come an tell me who is "civilized" and who is not...
Is it REALLY progress (except from technological) what we are living today?

Nice that you like it :-)
Guitar is tuned DADGBD. There are just three Chords:
      - E 5 (no thirds) for the drone
      - D Major
      - G Major
But it is pretty tricky to explain what I am playing exactly on the chords.
I guess the most easiest way to understand the arrangement is just to play both of the original voices at the same time in the key of E in a DADGBD tuning.

In ecclesiastical medieval latin the /c/ behind e, i, ae became [ʧ], a sound similar to the modern italian "c" or the modern "ch" in spanish.
Taking into consideration the historical context of this song, they are pronouncing properly the word "principes". They made a fine job, actually.

Very nice recorder playing. I imagine you are not really part of the Early Music movement? I'm driving at the fact that you have a rather busy vibrato. Most recorder players these play with very little vibrato. While that is partly a matter of where you're coming from -- vibrato is perfectly normal in folk music -- maybe it would be good to be aware of your vibrato and make it a conscious choice: you need to be able to turn it off.

    • @ShortTailedSnails
      @ShortTailedSnails  5 років тому +5

You're right, we're not trying to play this medial song historically correct. This is more like an attempt to play this song like a modern folk song with the musical tools of today's world music. Apart from the vibrato, the chords and harmonics of the guitar are probably historically wrong ;-) But thanks for pointing out the vibrato for the recorders. That is new!

@@ShortTailedSnails You just know that vibrato comment was from a guy. Btw, I love the overlap (both ancient and modern) of folk and early music; in spirit and historically they are far more blurred than modern "classical"
and vernacular music. I loved this.
